  • One of the most common questions I get from the community is "What is the best way to get into Sim Racing for Cheap?" Most commonly, I say that $200 is the "Sweet Spot" for a beginner racing wheel.
However, what if we take that $200, and make it the price cap, and making it the maximum price for a Sim Racing wheel, pedal set, and computer? Well, ended up halving that mark, putting together a $100 Sim Racing setup. Can we get a decent Sim Racing experience on the cheap?

NOTE: With how things go, prices can always fluctuate, and while I got everything put together under $100, your mileage may vary. The goal of this video is to show you that there are still options to race on a "Dirt Cheap Budget".
I'd love to hear about some of your "Budget" or "Beginner" setups!

I started back in '08 or '09 with a Thrustmaster Universal Challenge (force feedback-less wheel that supported just about every platform and apparently retailed for only 30 euros!), on Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2. I made the move to Live for Speed on the PC with the same wheel. Thankfully even back then you could run LFS on your average home & office rig.
Eventually the thing just went "snap" when I let a friend play Burnout on it and it had an extreme pull to the right afterwards, rendering it unusable.

I was able to snatch a Logitech Driving force GT for only 40 euros 2nd hand. FFB and 900 degrees of steering is an absolute killer for that price. Still going strong with it.

That wheel uses the same shell as the NGS Diablo, which I owned. The biggest problem with it was that the paddles behind were throttle and brake and not gears for some reason.
Also, that constant "right" is lack of calibration, you had to go to control panel to set that up

that is pretty much where I started nearly 25 years ago. I kinda miss it now with all the fuss, and huge expense of what i'm doing now.

The cheapest(yet most fun at the time) setup I’ve ever owned was in 1999-2000 for N64.
I was around 10 years old and got a NUBY Reality Rumble Vest which was basically a black vest with a ton of rumble packs in it. Which sadly costs $300-500 on eBay now…
Then I also got a really cool steering wheel along with it, which I can’t remember the details of.
It was the coolest gaming experience I’d ever experienced! Between playing Mario Kart, Cruisin’ USA, and Monster Jam.
Then I used the vest for other games like Goldeneye 007, Turok 2, and Army Men Sarges Heroes and felt so badass! First of all with what felt like a bulletproof vest, but also got to be as close to virtual reality as possible at the time that I was so stoked to wake up every morning to be able to play!

Hey William, watching this video gives me an idea for another video for the theme of bargain bin sim racing and that is the games themselves being finding titles that don't require a powerful pc like the dell and can either be free or on sale for players that want to start sim racing on a tight budget, hopes this helps.

If someone wants to get into sim racing in 2020 its gonna be to play iRacing, AC, ACC, rF2, AMS2, RaceRoom or GtS on PS4. At that point If you have a budget of $100 don't even bother. Id say the same for $200. If you wanna play rFactor 1? Sure I guess this would work. Id find a cheap used PS4 and play with controller over dealing with old out of date hardware and software.

Very interesting video. I used to clamp my wheel on the desk and game right there. Felt like driving a truck. At the moment I have no room for a traditional Sim racing setup, are there some compact stowaway solutions that you can recommend?

Playseat Challenge or new level racing f gt lite.

    • @Simracingpaddock
      @Simracingpaddock  Před 3 lety +2

I'd agree with Dani on the Playseat Challenge/F-GT Lite, but if you're even tighter for space, maybe a good wheel stand would be an option. It will allow you to fold them up, and certain wheel stands, like the Next Level Racing stands, can actually transform into cockpits, with a seat add-on.
GT Omega and Trak Racer also have some stands on the market, which can be quite portable.

Suction cups is one of those things the chinese factories can't do, infact not seen a suction cup stick with weight on it outside of some ancient bath rack fixture at my grandmums house. Wood screws on that wood table with care would do the job cheaply. Great little setup, with i had it as a kid. XD

8:19 if I'm looking at this correctly, I'm quite uncomfortable with that method of using the pedals. If one of those pedals is the clutch, he gets a pass. But if it's just gas and brake, that's a yikes from me dawg.

@@urgamecshk i bought it on a whim about 2 years ago. i was into arcade racers then, it was fun playing cruisin usa on a wheel again, but then it just sat until earlier this year when i got into sim racing.
i see them come up once in a while on kijiji, for $50-120 depending on condition.

PLEASE DONT GET A WHEEL LIKE THIS, especially if you are a beginner they are crappy plastic and the pedals just go in, there is no force feedback and breaks very easily, trust me I wasted my money and have one in my wardrobe (the wheel is completely off with wires showing and the pedals don’t work) it lasted a month
