Bhagat Puran Singh was a real hero. He was born in British India and he settled up a charity named 'pingalwara' for handicappeds and poor people. But he wasn't noticed much, he didn't get much help. He never forced anyone to converting the way M. Teresa did. True legends go unnoticed several times because they are less show off and more practical.

I live in Calcutta, the workplace of Mother Teresa. The charitable work done by her is undeniable but one thing can't be ignored. Mother Teresa had received large sums of money in donation from rich people worldwide but the condition of the medical facilities provided by the Missionaries of Charity proves that nothing much from that money has been spent in improvement of services & no allegations of financial irregularities have arised . So it is alleged that most of the money received by her for philanthropic purposes would end up in the coffers of the Vatican to be utilised in maintenance of churches & promoting missionary activities.
Edit: I have seen myself the leprosy centre run by the MoC at Titagarh. It didn't look like a hospital but more or less resembled an urban slum encroaching over railway property. It was even situated near a dumping yard & the isolation rooms were situated very close to the railway lines where trains travel daily.

I don't know where you got the idea that Hitchens ever took anything out of context, given that in his writings he went all the way to provide the context to every idea he was objecting too. His intellectual honesty was striking not only in writing but in speech as well as he correctly applied Occam's Razor, Hitchen's Razor, Sagan's razor and demonstrated a solid grasp of David Hume and George Orwell. He went after faith and religious fanatics because he identified in their mentality the very basis for fascism and totalitarianism. Theocracy, after all is the original and the ultimate totalitarian regime.

As a Loretoite and a bengali her name is pretty household and our school was literally elated to hear that she was granted sainthood. Even though i have been schooled in a missionary all-girls school since i was 3 , i turned out to be an atheist. Certainly no one imposed christinaty on us directly, our catholic classmates were treated differently, better. It made a huge difference in the fees we paid too. Most school fests were out of reach for us since we were "not catholic" but at the same time in a secular country such as ours (India) this seems absurd. I changed schools for my last two years of schooling coz our school had till 10th. Even though i have been to my new school just once due to the pandemic I saw the huge difference not only coz it was co-ed but the "discipline" stuff we were taught in Loreto was absolutely bs.We had a soft spot for her but meh sainthood? I have no stake in this story, she was a flawed human being who did what she thought was right by trying to help people that no one else cared for. With her, people who were considered untouchable by their society were cared for. Hitchens on the other hand has never built anyone up, but dedicated his life to trying to destroy people's beliefs. Something that he couldn't know he was right about, in the same way she couldn't know if she was right. The difference, her belief moved her to try and help those who were hurting, and he tried to pass on the emptiness that his arrogance couldn't completely hide, and alcohol couldn't completely numb.
He isn't someone to put on a pedestal, and neither is she. But this is like comparing someone who helps other people to the Kardashians. If she just helped one person she's better than him.

While she did help the people of India it was also clear that she cared more about increasing the Catholic Church's reputation and funding. Not to mention she had controversial practices like refusing to give treatment to near-death patients since she thought suffering brings you closer to God. I also find it hypocritical that she had high quality care at a good hospital in her deathbed.
She isn't an evil person but she's not an angel from heaven either. I'm glad she doesn't use fund money to sell drugs of buy luxury but she also didn't use the money to better the state of her orphanages and hospitals. And he said exactly the same things as Hitchens... she spent none of the money donated, she herself would make shoes to sell, and encouraged the poor and sick she was "helping" to do the same, or find other ways to make meager funds and it was THAT money that was used to build the so called orphanages and hospices. If they didn't give the money they earned, or even spent it on themselves or their families to simply eat first, this so called Saint would drive them out.
She was at best living in some fantasy world, at worst pure evil.
