Vienna is a nice city, I must have a longer stay sometime. Lovely food and beer at a very reasonable price for a city that's always considered to be expensive
A Viennese Krautsalat is most of the time served warm...but the cabbage is not cooked because it is a salad after all but the dressing is made out of a warm beef broth + vinegar + caraway seeds + a bit salt + pepper + sugar which got heated up in the first place and then a little bit of oil got added...Optional often served with crispy fried diced bacon bits as topping and the bacon fat from frying is then added instead of oil = the most tasty variant. The classical Vienna potatoe salad dressing is also beef broth (not chicken broth or vegetable broth at least when it is done the traditional way) + vinegar + salt + pepper + diced oinions + oil .the dressing is also hot due to the broth when the hot potatoes + diced onions are added, then you have to stir up until it gets a creamy binding, then it has to rest till it is cooled down and then you add a little bit of sugar + a little bit of local mustard (=a teaspoon taragon mustard) as a tasty emulsifying agent for the dressing and stir up again till the mustard is binding with the dressing then you add chives on top and it is ready to serve.. By the way the classical Bavarian potatoe salad is basically the same but instead of taragon mustard Bavarian sweet mustard is added and parsley instead of chives..so the taste is then a little bit sweeter than the Viennese potatoe salad
Was a scorcher - the 5 days I was away all were ! That place is the Belvedere Palace - just 5 mins walk from the main train station - beautiful isn't it !
Europe does a few versions of basically potato salad with stock. Schitzel i've had based on pork, Veal, and a sort of mystery meat thats was between spam and sausage. Fun fact once in Nuremberg the food was very like yours and a friend didn't like chives he ordered after us we were eating the cabbage salad, the potato salad and because it for Nuremberg sausages he decided to avoid the chives to order the cheese! It turned out to be Brie and it arrived covered in chives, and he spend an hour picking out all the chives!
Assuming that was a cooked brie I can imagine it's a nightmare to get chives out of it ! Mystery meat schnitzl sounds intriguing - can't work out if it's possibly genius or just Austrian school dinners!
I found your channel through Gary's channel, and this video caught my eye straight away! I'm in Vienna a lot and worked in the Irish pub across from 1516 (Flanagans) for 4 years. The manager in 1516 is my fellow Cork man and former housemate Jamie. Their food is the best in Vienna and at amazing prices for the location. And you went for the Weisse, which is what I drink there too 🍺😀
@GreenoEats cheers, I'm looking forward to seeing your Győr and Bratislava videos! I think Győr is great but I find it hard to get a proper, impressive meal in Bratislava
Aside from the potato salad I had the exact same meal and drink in Munich, all tasty as you say. Vienna looks beautiful. We played Rapid Vienna in the EL but couldn't travel there due to covid restrictions. Had a good time on my mini south coast tour but the traffic there and back was a right PITA!
Vienna is lovely, wish I had spent a bit more time there. My only other trip to Vienna was 6 years back, I went to see Admira Wacker Vs Rapid Vienna, in the away end. The Ultras scared a then 10 yr old Greenager a bit 🤣
Hey, cool! I used to work near tha "1516" for many years (on Kärntner Ring). Been there. Believe for a burger. Better places for a "Schnitzel" but its not bad! 👍👍
I think it’s a pretty cool place. Make their own beer in the centre of Wien. Not unreasonably priced. Sure, there are likely better schnitzel around, but I was happy with what I got. Do you have recommendations of better places though?
Hi greeno I'm looking forward to your upcoming tour of central Europe. When you visit Hungary you have to try their goulash however on a hot day that could be not the ideal food to try. Slovak food is also excellent and authentic. Enjoy mate
Viennese here! As you mentioned Sauerkraut: It is not to be confused with Krautsalat. Krautsalat is made with raw cabbage and a vinegar dressing whereas Sauerkraut is fermented cabbage (due to the fermentation process it softens and gets sour - similar to Korean kimchi). The latter is suited as a side order to pork roast, smoked meat, hearty sausages or similar dishes (you can even make soup with it) but it would have been an extremely poor choice for the Wiener Schnitzel. The Krautsalat you had however (aside from the potato salad) works really well with the Schnitzel. I'm glad you enjoyed your super short quick trip here in my home city. Best regards! 🙂
Thanks for the education - it's always good to know new things! It was my second time in vienna - and I have only spent a total of around 36 hours there. But it's such a lovely city that I plan to come back, and stay longer !!

Nice one !. Vienna is one of my well remembered haunts from my younger days and the home of the famous 'Sacher Torte' which we normally find as Black Forest Gateaux. Scnitzel really should be veal but one rarely finds that (and if one paid for it is it really ?) And Wiessen. A great beer. Not as gassy as typical lager and much tastier.
I have only ever done whistle stop visits to Vienna - I really should stay a long weekend sometime and explore more of the place. Glad you agree on the Weisse - it really went nicely with the lunch
I know flights depend on circumstances. But from the south coast to Stanstead could not have been fun. The drive time was double that of the flight. When flying from the UK to Vienna, I have only used Heathrow. That menu looked nice, although, it is not often in Germany or Austria that you see English prioritised over German i.e. the English on the menu was first and bolded. The sauerkraut was a genius idea to cut the richness of the schnitzel. Vienna is beautiful and I do like the food; when it is done properly.
Great review Greeno. Must admit that I too am partial to a Wiener or Jager Schnitzel. The side dishes looked delish. I thought the attached brewery was a great touch.
