- Is the Osprey Atmos 65 L the best pack to get? I find the 5 things that I think make this the best overall back pack for weekend and multi day back pack trips. The Anti Gravity system makes it easy to adjust and takes the load off your back! With many more features that make backpacking easier!

Went to philmont 2021 with this, I 100% recommend this backpack. Perfect for 2 weeks which was my trek
Their warranty and customer service is incredible! I had to send back a six-year-old manta series day pack in the 20 L range because some of the straps were coming off of it. I was able to get a brand new pack and they allowed me to get one up to 20% higher in value than the one I sent in. I ended up getting a manta 34 in Green.

Really awesome! Definitely the best pack out there! Really love how the air flows through the anti-gravity system, and it's just so comfortable I use the pack every day to school and work without the top lid!

I have the Osprey Atmos65 AG from 2016 as well. Love it. Don’t need to upgrade yet, but when i do, I will definitely buy the latest version. It’s been my favorite heavy duty pack for multi day hikes & trips. Super comfortable & durable. When I want to go really light, I do have an Osprey Talon 44 or 22 day pack depending on the length of my trip.
Not a lot of difference...but the water bottle pockets are bigger/ deeper. I'm still using my 2016 65L as well! Thanks for watching.
This vid led to me buying this pack and taking on several 4-7 day trips. This thing owns so much better then any other pack ive tried!!

Thanks Chris for another great review. I recently bought the Atmos 50 and loaded it up with about 35lbs for a couple of short hikes. The 35lbs felt way lighter, this (Atmos 50) pack is extremely comfortable and bullet proof. I'm a newbie but at 67 y/o I prefer comfort over weight savings.

I was going to say the exact same thing - loaded to 35lb my Atmos 50 AG is so comfortable, and rides on my body so well that it doesn’t affect my balance by swinging when crossing streams, logs, scrambling, etc. It carries so well that I barely notice the weight, which was not the case with the UL packs I tried before going with the Osprey.
I have been leaning towards the Granite Gear 60 but this looks like an amazing pack. Appreciate the review and your passion for the outdoors.
Yes...it's a great pack but compare them side by side ( or at least the specs ) if you can't get your hands on them together and see what works for you.
I love the grey color. I've had my Osprey Momentum for years and it's still great. I needed new clips and hardware for it and Osprey sent me the new parts, no questions asked. Even matched the colors. For a big trip, I think I'd follow your lead and take the Atmos.

I got the Atmos 65 and I love it.. very comfortable and versatile. I did cut the straps on my pack they are really long I saved 5.6 ounces by cutting them.
The straps are a little odd that they are soo long. But yes very comfortable and durable pack...I'm rough on mine and it keeps ON going!!

I really love the anti-gravity system! The weight transfer to the hips is golden. It's hard to beat an Osprey pack for all the reasons you mentioned. For longer distances, I use my Stratos 35 to cut down on weight and non-essentials. But When I want all the comfort items, The Atmos 65 is my go-to.

Have the woman’s version. Love it!! Having back and neck issues the anti gravity carting system saves my hikes. Picked up the 40 liter Lumina lost almost 2 pounds on the weight but carries just as well. Sold on Osprey

Same here, I have a Stratos 24, Manta 36 AG, Kestrel 38 (my May-Sept overnight-3 day pack), Atmos 50 AG, and Aether 70 AG. The only one I haven’t used very much is the Aether 70, and I’m hoping to fix that with some winter 1-2 nighties this year. My new GG Crown2 60 is almost as comfortable, but I haven’t tried anything else that came close to Osprey.
I love Osprey backpack! After finding the Gregory Paragon 58L Backpack, that is around 3.5 pounds and can carry 50 pounds, was the selling point for me. The belt on the pack is able to move with you when hiking was cool part of the deal.

I’ve also cut the length of the straps. Burnt the ends to prevent fraying. Way better! No longer flapping all over the place. 😅
Well you got me to "invest" in the Osprey Daylight. It fits better when it's loaded up. If that makes sense.
That does make sense...when loaded it's opened up for it's intended use and fits to your back. The Daylight is a very popular pack...multi purpose!
I bought my Atmos 65 in 2019 and I love it. I also invested in the osprey pack liner. I know a lot of folks like the trash compactor bags, but the Osprey liner closes like a dry bag. I could submerge my pack in a river and all my stuff will still be dry, no worries. I really enjoy the stow on the go trekking pole holders too, especially if I want to eat a snack on the go (which is often).
Never tried the Osprey liner....sounds like a good way to go...I like the stow on the go pole holders as well...handy!
I bought it a couple of months ago and here in Denmark it comes with the raincover.
BTW on my computer it looks really blue (camera settings). I know it's not the blue version because of the green straps and I have the blue version myself.

The long straps can be tucked away in the slots for the adjustable waistband, so it's not a big issue.
I tried mine out the other day for the first time, it was quite comfortable but I wasn't completely sure on the set up for the hip and anti gravity system. Where's the idea spot for the hip band to sit, and does the anti gravity position depend on how much weight is in the pack?
Great review btw, I didn't realise those straps at the rear were for a sleeping pad, nor the bottom pouch for a sleeping bag.

I am finding the back packs no longer make the straps long enough for attaching an accordion foam pad externally on bottom outside...at the beginning of the video I see you have one...can you comment on that?

Since i dont have the option to check the fit on this backpack i would like to ask you what you think for the sizing of the backpack....I am 181cm 79kg with a medium torso....the osprey app has me measured as M and .....im probably gonna go for the M but i want to ask you too whats your opinion.Thank you in advance !!
Couldn’t choose between Osprey Exos, Atmos 50 and Deuter futura vario 50. Finally watched this video and purchased Atmos 65. I hope it’s a right choice for my purposes.

I was wondering if you think you could take this on a hut to hut hiking trip or a day trip even, for example when you take of the top compartment? Or do you think it would be too big? Thanks! I recommend 50L - 70L pack range with the 60-65L being a sweet spot. It's a full back pack but for a full day back pack trip at 4.5 lbs it would work if you have extra gear and need the space...yes it would be very good for a day trip.

How well do the pads on the hips (Atmos) conform to your body?

Can’t decided between the Aether 55 & Aether 65. First hike will be like a 5 day. Most of the other hikes just for weekends. It’s mainly summer hiking but I’m also not ultra light. Any recommendations. Thank you for a great review.
I like the larger capacity...gives you more options when loading and doesn't cost much more and is only 10L more but makes a difference...I love my 65L

There are so many backpacks it is hard to choose I was thinking about getting the Tenon sport scout 3400 and now I see the Osprey Atmos 65L one and think I should get it. wow, they are both good to me. The turning point is the tenon comes with a rain cover and the osprey does not and the difference in the prices. I am going to be traveling with a hammock and wonder which would carry that easier and maybe a small tent if I could not find a place to hang a hammock., I want to travel by a Catrike Trike so it would be loaded on the trike. any ideas I don't like panniers because you can not go on a hike with them. I really like the videos you put some humor along with a lot of information as well thanks. we all need that today to just get away for a while from the day's troubled world.

I just traded up from the Teton scout 4000 to the osprey Atmos. The Teton is extremely stiff on the back and a lot of the load ended up on my shoulders as the hip belt allowed the weight to slip down from my hips. Also most of the external storage is unusable on the Teton when fully loaded. It was a great starting backpack though.
Great review Chris , much appreciated. I have found a good deal at Go Outdoors for £160 and I can’t wait to try it on trail. Is the colour of your pack grey or blue? Slightly confused , I could swear that is a blue but, I could be wrong as well.

Yes, the panel between the two has 2 straps that can be un done to open it as 1 compartment.

The Atmos AG 50 (M) was just delivered today, but since my purchase I've wondered whether the AG 65 (S) would be better. I love those side pockets, I may be kicking it to REI for a return. And yeah, those straps. At 5'7" they're a serious hazard, and forget about peeing!
LOL...the big difference is the size and a few features. I like the options I have with a 65L...I backpack in the winter so I use the extra room. Keep Hiking!
I did the same thing bought the AG 50 and now returning for the 65 AG. I like the idea of the front side pockets too.
I made the switch. The AG 65 just makes so much more sense.

Hey Chris! Just came across your channel and I really like your content. I just got a 60L Osprey Aether the other day and they look pretty similar. My question to you is this : Were you able to zip you hipbelt pockets with one hand while the bag was on you? My left pocket I couldn't even really get started and the before getting stuck and the right one closed pretty well but stopped with like an inch till it was closed. Cheers!
I have an atmos 65. It's hard to close my pocket with one hand. You can grease a little with silicone grease on the inside to make it easier to close.
Yes the pocket zipper is difficult ... the it starts out down comes up and around a corner then straightens out... seems to have problems getting around the corner. Thanks for watching.
I made some paracord lanyards for the zippers on the belt pockets. They help to get a better angle on the pull and make it a lot easier.
You should get one of those store " mannequins " to demonstrate all those backpacks on. Then you wouldn't have to wrestle a mamal to show us the pack.

Thoughts on using this for multiple single day hikes? The REI day pack and the Osprey Manta are my other options.
While I know it’s too large, it’s tall enough for my torso and I like the hip belts. Plus it can work as checkin luggage. i.e. are the length and hip belts worth the extra weight/size even though I’ll only fill it with a day’s worth of stuff?
Ideally I’d purchase two packs but trying to stick to one for now.
I have a Osprey Stratos 34 L which an excellent pack for day hikes. Used on the West Highland Way in September 2019. At 178cm and with long back I have a Large. I find the back suspension has great ventilation. Padding shoulder and hip just right. Good adjustments for torso. Love the vertical zip pocket on the outside for firstaid kit. Has 2 small zip pockets at the top for small items. Also a horizontal zip pocket near the base which is store rain pants and cap. My only con is you can only stand it up one way or it tips over. Only a little gripe

This pack is unbelievably comfortable. I bought one of the two pound packs and just keep reaching for old betsy! I worried about the extra weight for awhile but you just don't feel it, and I'm old and have hair on my ears!

paid 250$ for mine (Atmos AG, sweden) + the company i bought it off had a deal to give you 100$ discount if you spend 500$.
Buy out-of season and get good deals.

I like the Atmos...prefer the 2 outside front pockets coming in on either side versus the open to interior front of the Aether.

It would work well....but - figure out all your gear and weight and see what works for you. next to your tent your pack is the heaviest piece of gear you'll have to get. I'd compare size / weight and price with other packs and see what your most comfortable with. AT sounds like a great adventure.

@@christopherwalsh7700 Look at the Osprey Exos. It’s about 2 lbs vs 4 1/2 for the Atmos.
Also I think I'd use a rubber band or something to fold the long straps in vs. cutting them. You can adjust the tucking if you find you want them longer in the future, but it's hard to undo cuts! Permanently modifying a $300 backpack isn't something I'd personally do lightly.
That’s why I haven’t done it yet...usually tuck them in. But not necessary to be so long. Not a deal breaker for me.
how come you'd go for the Atmos over the Aether?
I like the pocket layout and the beef up ventilation... both are great packs! Keep hiking!

You have to pull the red tabs. (You have to pull them towards where your back would be not up/down- took me a while to figure that out)

That's the way to go since they're sized for torso height and not total height. I was shocked they I was in between a medium and large seeing as I'm pretty short
Check out the sizing on Osprey website. You can take your own torso length measurement and determine from there!
Torso length is key! No matter your height or weight, you must MUST have your torso measured to get the right fit! You will not regret it, having the perfect size, adjusted pack.
@@RBares4 I'm 5'6" 175lbs 18"~ 19" torso and a M fit me best. It also depends a bit on if you are thin, muscular or heavy.
I’m 5’9” torso is most important but height and weight matter too... best to go in to REI but doable online with Osprey... they have a section about sizing packs on their site. Once you figure out small/ medium or large then the adjustments are all that’s left.

I believe it comes in a couple of different sizes. s/m and m/l...I'd try it on and see how it feels. I'm 5'9" works for me.

Hi Marjie, I've been putting them together and then I roll them up and tuck them behind the belt buckle/ clip on the belt. Yes the anti- gravity is a good design.
I like the idea of the long straps because I can hook the pack to my trike and take it with me.
WOW! you answered the question right off the bat....the atmos isn't even the best pack from Osprey and the 4.5lbs means its not even a slightly good pack. Because its way too much form/marketing over function (really at every point) and is 3.5 lbs too heavy. That can be an entire tent and sleep system of weight just out for a walk with you. I could never think of taking 3.5 lbs of completely useless weight... there are several packs at slightly over 2 lbs at a cheaper price point and do the job very well. A 4.5 lb pack is like taking a canvas tent....its just not necessary, and the super comfortable suspension system so you can carry even more weight is part of that weight.
A lot of marketing to a new backpacker in my opinion. Signed, a guy that still has a 65 L 5.5lb Gregory to lend out. (still super comfortable)

Different backpacks can serve different needs. If you ONLY care about weight then this pack was never for you and YOUR personal needs. Review after review on CZcams is showing this as at least a good backpack that does what it was made to do. Complaining that a backpack that was never designed to be lightweight isn't lightweight is not reasonable. Most reviewers also comment that it makes carrying that excess weight it was designed to carry feel lighter than other packs.
@@TheycallmeMrWonka Thanks for the comment. To be sure calling a well made pack bad is silly. It is a real nice pack. That said for me efficiency is everything. I'm a guy that requires less weight...mostly because I do take everything (in some form). So everything has to fit. .One of my gripes is that for every seam zipper theres a point of entry for water. When I used the more traditional packs I found myself zipping and unzipping endlessly looking for things. I do think its a lot of marketing though like cars....something new every year. As well I found the light weight packs perform even better than traditional or at least as well. I'm a huge Gossamer Gear fan when it comes to packs. Currently using the G4-20. Love the built in sit pad, fantastic from pockets and a ling pocket on one side is awesome.
I'll tell you though since that comment two years ago, at 60 years old I found out I suffer from severe ADHD. Every trouble I had backpacking could be attributed to that. I used to believe it was just altitude messing with me. So my ultra simple extremely efficient 25 oz pack does it for me. One tube and one small zippered pocket in a very comfortable package.
My diagnosis also makes it hard for me to allow for the Others and their needs - so im working on that.
I appreciate the gear talk - my favorite argument since giving up news.

Great review but you are incorrect when you stated it doesn't come with an Integrated Rain Cover... It Does. It's located in the top pocket accessed from the rear of the pack..!!
Also, I nearly spat my wine out when I heard you say that you're thinking of cutting the excess waist belt off... Why not fold the ends towards the buckles and then either tape it up or use a tough rubber band to secure it. That way, you're not defacing a quality pack which would invalidate any Warranty and also reduce the resale value in the future.

They don’t invalidate the warranty for cutting straps to length. I trimmed them with a hotknife on my Atmos 50 because they were ridiculously long too. 😊
