You always have to get back up on the horse after it throws you. I actually had to literally do that, and it marked me for later when I was the first person to stay on another horse that was trying to rid me off into cactus and brush. The owner "forgot" - yeah, right - to tell me her horse tested the riders this way. After that the horse was an angel to me and the owner was impressed. But with everything, if you love it, get back to it. You may need to alter how you do it from now on, but it's important to not give into fear too often. I practice in my head what I will do in certain situations, so I have a plan. Information is everything - even if I don't believe exactly in the high strangeness, I educate myself nonetheless - just in case. Stranger things have happened. Great story - sorry, I'm a really late coming to these - been listening to others with these stories which is why I seem to know so much. Like I said - always have a plan, or two, or three.

Never imitate the sounds of the night, especially not the Sabe, unless you know the creatures' language or what their sounds mean. You may get them to become threatened and want to protect their territory. They say not to whistle in the night too. Just say, we recognize your right to be here, but we're just having fun - please do not scare us. If they continue - apologize and get back to the main camp area.

Hey Chris, This is Pete, I am from the UK and have lived in the US for 42 years and have backpacked, solo, for a decade if not longer. I worked in 6 National Parks and hiked around 8,000 miles in those Parks. I had some interesting encounters but there is 1 that shook me to my core when it happened. I was hiking in Zion National Park, up top on the Kolob Plateau which is around 7,500 feet, not that high but it was in late Fall of 2020. I was doing a 25 miler day hike from Wild Cat Canyon Trailhead back to Springdale along the West Rim. It was cold but not freezing out and I was dressed for the day with all the winter gear. About an hour in I entered a thicket of small Oak only about 100 yards or so long and the trail smack dab in the middle. In this small Oak patch I felt a slight uneasy feeling of something observing me but it was not Malevolent. I was in high spirits and felt that nothing short of a Glabrazu Demon could dissuade me from continuing the hike. I continued my hike and it snowed pretty heavily up top , even though it was not forecasted to do so. I was prepared and laid down the miles stomping away. I got down to Cabin Spring and the entire trail was iced over from previous snow melt then refroze. Thankfully I had Crampons to help me descend the icy trail with a 400'+ drop to my left. I made it into the small canyon, now this canyon always gave me the creeps, it just had that vibe of a cemetery. An hour or so later I made it down to Angels Landing and it was only 9pm, pitch black, stars looked like diamonds and the temps had dropped down to 25 degrees. I was worried about my feet. At Angels Landing I heard a rock sound that sounded like a Tomb Lid sliding, you know that grating sound. At that point I was changing out my wet sweaty clothes and putting on some dry ones. My 900lumen Petzl headlamp went straight to the sound and staring back at me were 2 huge golden eyes......I could not make out how far away it was but it looked to be around 40 yards away in a lava boulder field. I pulled out my 1200 lumen flashlight and lit up the whole area and saw the animal........a large female cougar......not a sasquatch. Supposedly she was tracking the scent of Bighorns that frequented the area. I managed to relax a bit and put my clothes back on then head towards her to take Walter Wiggles Switch Backs down to the Grotto Bus Stop. I constantly stopped to look left and right but no Cougar. I was on edge but relaxed when I got down the road. I made it to the Zion Lodge and reported the sighting to the Front Desk of the Zion Lodge and they passed it along to NPS. From there it was an easy stroll back to Springdale only 5 more miles of flat cruising walking. Something followed me in Wildcat Canyon Meadow, it was just out of sight but curious about me. I had No Bear Spray, No Knife just a 200 dcb Air Horn that would deafen an Elephant. I borrowed a Laser Pointer from a friend, if an animal charges you in the dark the laser pointer will blind it to the point it wont be able to see for an hour or two.

Tell him that the Sabe know God too. In fact, Scott Carpenter (RIP) has stories about invoking Creator God and Jesus Christ when the Sabe are being a huge pain in the rear because they are supposed to respect God even if they don't you. Welcome back to the faith!

Actually, this saved them from buying a property occupied by sasquatch. I suggest people always stay a few nights on a new property such as that just for this reason. To determine if there are iffy situations. Also, agree with JohnDoe below. Always reposition your vehicle to escape fast, if indeed, you have to do so. Have your keys at the ready, lock door, and speed off. Always make sure you have at least 1/4 of tank of gas, if not more. We always stop in town and fill up b4 we go to our wooded location or campground. Regular campgrounds and areas with several cabins that are occupied regularly are best places to be especially with children. Creatures that go bump in the night usually harass lone cabins and unofficial campgrounds where there aren't anyone close.

I am curious. The Sabe didn't bother him - just recognized him. With that positive experience, I would continue to visit the woods and wildlands. I am cautious and I do NOT hike in the dark if alone - if I can help it. I have been caught by dusk rolling in too soon - did not keep good track of my time. But such an experience would not keep me from one of my favorite things to do - hike in the wilds of the USA. Of course, I usually have the date jumping in my lap at horror movies - some guys do not like it when the female portion of the partnership is the least frightened or the least to let fear keep her from doing stuff she likes.
