The British Grenadiers - HM Coldstream Guards

- A song entitled "The New Bath" found in John Playford's dance books from the 17th century is thought to be the origin. However, it is also suggested that it was derived from the Dutch march "Mars van de jonge Prins van Friesland" ("March of the young Prince of Friesland", referring to Prince Johan Willem Friso); the first notes of this tune are similar. The march was introduced to Britain during the reign of the Dutch Stadholder-King William III. Today it is played at special events in the Netherlands, as a musical tribute to the Ministry of Defence and as a substitute for the Wilhelmus in absence of the monarch.
The first known association of the tune with the regiment is in 1706 as 'The Granadeer's March', and the first version printed with lyrics from around 1750. It was a popular tune throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and remains so until this day. During Operation Market Garden, a few men of the British 1st Airborne Division are said to have played this song using a flute and a few helmets and sticks as drums.
It is played annually at the Trooping the Colour in London. Additionally, the first eight measures are played during the ceremony when the Escort for the Colour marches into position on Horse Guards Parade. - Hudba

This is my favorite British March. It just so happens that the Grenadier Guards are my favorite regiment. They were the first regiment of foot guards in the British Army. They got there name and bearskins from the French Grenadiers in The Battle of Waterloo. The bearskin is a early foam of camouflage because as the enemy would aim for there faces, they would get confused and shoot the bearskin instead. It also worked with the Calvary.
First was the Coldstream but line of foot the Grenendiers took first because of nobility ;-)
@@clearcloud6972 well no, you're both wrong. The coldstreams were first of foot until they sided with Oliver Cromwell in the civil war and in his exile, charles the second formed the grenadier guards and on his return to England, the coldstream guards laid down their weapons in the name of Cromwell and picked them up in the name of the king and so the grenadiers were given the title "first of foot" and the coldstreams given the title "second of foot". So in short, the coldstreams lost the title ,first of foot, when they betrayed the king and they were given second place when they returned to the side of the king but weren't reinstated as the first of foot because of their actions and had to accept being second place to the new grenadiers
@@swampwolfegaming1233 swampy .... is not the king and royal titles NOBILITY [baron, viscount, earl]? well explained but you will find my comment got to the point quicker and factually correct ;-)
Second to None
@@swampwolfegaming1233 The Coldstream Guards fought on the side of Parliament under Oliver Cromwell and are the oldest Regiment in the British Army however the Grenadiers Guards fought on the Royalist side and when the Monarchy was restored the Grenadiers where made the senior regiment but the Coldstream are the oldest. Hence the regimental motto ‘Nulli Secundus’. I joined the Coldstream in 1963, happy days.

Wonderful rendition!
What a great arrangement!
Funny how the Coldstreamers, the rivals of the grenadiers are playing their march.
The British grenadiers is dedicated towards the grenadier company in every battalion so it is relevant to the cold streamers ;) the grenadier guards just adopted it as their quick march.
Joshua Swann Ah really? I always thought this was just a grenadier march. Forgive me for my ignorance, I don't know much about the guard regiments compared to other regiments.
Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson n it's ok sir :) between 1750 and 1815 the grenadier guards were called the 1st foot guards as they earned the name grenadier after defeating the French old guards. So before this the British grenadiers was played by all regiments in honour of their elite company and even after Waterloo regiments still played it, the Coldstreamers included ;)
Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson you mean compared to the navy...
Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson "Mars van de jonge Prins van Friesland" was never a British march. This is a flagrant copy of an earlier Dutch melody.
I get the melody stuck in my head about twice a month

Best version. No questions asked
The grenadier guards and the coldstream guards are two completely different regiments that historically hate each other and this music is the march of the grenadier guards
@ SwampWolfe Gaming That´s not true my friend, we all had the same training in the Guards depot, we were the Guards Division, I´m ex Coldstream Guards and a Para, I have zero animosity against Grenadier Guards! Why should I ????.....................
@@paraguard60 hate is the wrong word, I meant strong rivalry and its because in the civil war the Coldstreams stayed with Cromwell while the Grenadiers were formed by Charles II in exile and the Coldstreams laid their arms down to the Grenadiers on the return of the king and picked up their arms again in the name of the king but were now pronounced as the second of foot rather than their previous title of first of foot (now bestowed to the Grenadiers) which is against the Coldstreams motto, second to none (nulli secundus), surely a former Coldstreamer should know why the two regiments have a rivalry?
