- What is a Bulb, Corm, Tuber, Rhizome, Tuberous Roots: Confused? Not anymore!
The word bulb to a plant person can means so many things. It's used as a generic catch all term .
Gardeners use the word "bulb" to refer to any plant that stores energy for its seasonal dormancy cycle in an underground storage organ. Basically, saving food for winter!
Only certain plants have true bulbs and it is a minefield of miss-information if you search online.
What growers call bulbs can more technically be divided into five categories:
true bulbs,
corms,
tubers,
rhizomes,
and tuberous roots.
As this is predominantly an Aroid channel this video looks at what all this means in botanical terms and then looks at how it relates to Aroids in general.
No matter what kind of storage organ the plant has, all serve the same general function. They store food to carry the plants through dormancy and to get them started the following growing season.
True dormancy does not exist in bulbs. Although little or no external growth is visible, a bulb continues to develop internally. In tulips, for example, flower buds form during dormancy. In Aroids like Amorphophallus and Sauromatum a new petiole, the thing that holds the leaf ,or peduncle, the thing that holds the inflorescence, is prepared ready for the next active period.
Dormancy is usually brought on by external factors such as cold weather or a change in how wet or dry the environment is. As growers we can encourage dormancy by withholding water or digging up and storing the bulb.

Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome video, I am a little bit less lost!
Amazing stuff again. Love these videos
This is exactly what i was looking for, thanks for the very informative video! Also, loved your illustrations :)
Neat! Today I've learned. thanks for compiling this into a brief and well-understadable video
Excellent video. Studying for an exam on propagation and I found this information very helpful. Cheers from Canada.
This is actually amazing, love the drawings aesthetic
Exactly
Super useful video. Thanks :)
Thanks I am glad you like it
I just happened across your channel, and I'm really digging the research and illustrations/animations! After seeing your intro video, I was hoping to see some of your 3D/graphics artist skills incorporated into the channel. I think they aided the presentation of the information well in this video.
I recently messed with Alocasia and Goeppertia roots, and those were pretty interesting. There was definitely more going on there than with Epipremnums!
Excellent informative vid. This was a positive insight on learning the various varieties of such. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
the illustrations in this video are great!
thanks for the clarification!
Thanks! makes me want to do more when I get positive feedback like that.
This is excellent. Thank you so much for the video.
Glad it was helpful!
This is a great video! Helped my classroom a lot :)
Thatâs great news. There is SO much miss information out there itâs hard for students to get it right. Even the RHS has it wrong in some places. The big grey area is âwhat is a cormâ even experts struggle. I have more information now so I need to do a new videos to follow up. I have one coming up About Arum that covers the pollination cycle and Iâd love to see what a class thinks of it
wow
Oh my god finally i understand it
Any videos coming? Id love to see species profiles of hardy aroids.keep up the good work.
Working on it! I have an art channel and it can be all consuming sometimes and I'll be honest, this last winter really got me down with the losses I had.
@@aroid_artist i know the feeling, wakes up one morning and see all slug damage over your plants. Nothing really pisses me off more than slugs. Sorry for my language. Over the years i tend to keep slug resist plants, they more boring but less work and no bad surprices..as for the winter, we keep learning from our mistakes and change if needed. Im sorry for the plant you have lost, but we can always buy or make more. Plants should be nice to keep not stressful. If you love art spend the time on what you love. Keep up the good work.
Calathea have tubers, can it be used to propagate the same? Please do let me know.
3:39 is that the bulbs or caladium ?
So my alocasia melo isnât actually a corm?
Hello. Would it to be possible to buy Sauromatum Giganteum from You? I live in the Czech Republic, I think it is not possible to send tubers to the Czech Republic, but seeds yes. Thank you.
Hi there. I donât have any seeds currently Iâm afraid. I have been able to get some things through to friends in your area. Iâm not a seller but I do trade a lot
