@Don_Coyote Paperclips DON'T work when they're straight. People are allowed to shape themselves into whoever they need to be for themselves, and no religion has the right to tell someone that who they truly are is wrong. That's a really gross takeaway from this episode.

In real life pray the gay away institutions are prisons of non stop emotional and physical torture. Parents send them off to them telling them they better come home straight or don't come home at all. In many instances the kids are taken out of their beds and shipped off with no goodbyes or warning. They're traumatized and then immediately subjected to a regimen of brainwashing and abuse to weaken them and make them feel like they're nothing. They call it cleaning the slate and it's sick.
Are they even legal? Here they got banned years ago due they increased suicide risk.
Some places literally used sleep deprivation as a means if punishment, which bordered on legalized torture...
Yeah there was one they did a documentary about it called kidnapped for Christ. Where they would bring the kids to a country in South America that was less protective of kids. They would make those kids exercise until they could not walk. And if you talk back you get punishments. There is a room that if you really bad you'd sleep in that was basically a cot a bucket and a roll of toilet paper. The only way one kid managed to escape was by giving one of the camera crew a letter to send to his friend. Crazy part is the people that would send their kids to this were either rich or bleeding themselves dry.

@@mckenzie.latham91I just commented about one where they beat the kids up and if you were bad they would put you in a little room with a bucket, toilet paper and a cot. And some of the ex employees said they could hear screaming's coming from the room.

Classic episode
There's a really good documentary I recommend watching about these type of conversion groups called Pray Away. There's actually a guy in there that is exactly like the "cured" priest from this episode. The reality of what these places do to force someone into a state of belief that they are cured and 100% straight, is disgusting and horrific.
An old friend of mine was sent to one in high school. Shock therapy was used among other things and he entered a catatonic state of mind once he was released. He fell into drugs and dissapeared suddenly one day. They found his body near these salt mines, having completely overdosed. We never found out if it was intentional, but what happened to him was a result of his parents forcing him into that camp. The worst part was that they were content over his death much more than accepting he was gay.

Why am I being reminded of Criminal Minds while watching this review? Seriously there was an episode of that show called “Broken” in season 8 that deals with conversion therapy as well. I love that episode so much despite how dark and F’D up it is. That episode was the first time I ever heard the song Madness by Muse and it quickly became one of my all time favorite songs in the entire world. Even with that nostalgia I still don’t let it blind me from just how F’D up that episode was. That’s one of the few times where the unsub was a sympathetic character where it didn’t make his actions justified but it did make them understandable.
