Usually you would lightly stipple ceiling before doing a circular pattern.
Artex and other textured coatings can contain small amounts of asbestos, but the fibres are well bonded and not easily released. As artex is often found on ceilings it is not easily damaged in building occupation, and providing the artex is not damaged you are not at risk.
always remove artex using water and wear a mask.. don't breath the dust..

In the nick of time - your video, that is! Three days ago my dining room ceiling leaked leaving a hole . Ive decided to try and repair it myself after watching your (as always) precise explanation (but no Artex required thank goodness). A woman's job is never done - thank goodness for your oh so helpful videos! PS Yes, I did get a plumber to source the leak but have a rather large insurance excess so will try the diy. .

Fantastic repair, I am surprised that you got the new artex to match the existing without fail. Also good of you to seal around the edges with expanding foam too as that really does help minimise potential movement but for belt and braces I advise to use scrim tape to stop any future cracks but other then that I am really pleased with how satisfying the result turned out, gotta show us when you have painted it!

Not sure I like the idea of some of the ceiling containing asbestos and the rest not. What if someone in future tests it in the new area and concludes the whole lot is asbestos-free?

I used easyfill for patching. Sets quick and don't shrink back like artex showing background bumps. I would follow pattern line around edge smoothing off with blade. S shape. Then sponge clean following original pattern line. New mix to pattern onto original pattern ceiling and sponge around swirls cleansing off. Can't see pattern edge join especially with patterns like swirl as there is a something to follow. Shame there is no call for work like this now.. After 25 years artexing work disappeared.

@@PaintingandDecorating scrim won't tear if it's put on the joints properly, I meant scrim where the new board meets the 2 original boards on the ceiling not the ceiling edge up to the wall, and the new board joints. Really nice job though. As a plasterer I have done a few repairs but usually just price to scrape pva and overskim them or even overboard and skim. Artex and artex repairs are definately a Dying art.
