- The Battle of Albuera (16 May 1811) was a battle during the Peninsular War. A mixed British, Spanish and Portuguese corps engaged elements of the French Armée du Midi (Army of the South) at the small Spanish village of Albuera, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of the frontier fortress-town of Badajoz, Spain.
From October 1810, Marshal Masséna's French Army of Portugal had been tied down in an increasingly hopeless stand-off against Wellington's Allied forces, safely entrenched in and behind the Lines of Torres Vedras. Acting on Napoleon's orders, in early 1811 Marshal Soult led a French expedition from Andalusia into Extremadura in a bid to draw Allied forces away from the Lines and ease Masséna's plight. Napoleon's information was outdated and Soult's intervention came too late; starving and understrength, Masséna's army was already withdrawing to Spain. Soult was able to capture the strategically important fortress at Badajoz on the border between Spain and Portugal[12] from the Spanish, but was forced to return to Andalusia following Marshal Victor's defeat in March at the Battle of Barrosa. However, Soult left Badajoz strongly garrisoned. In April, following news of Masséna's complete withdrawal from Portugal, Wellington sent a powerful Anglo-Portuguese corps commanded by Sir William Beresford to retake the border town. The Allies drove most of the French from the surrounding area and began the siege of Badajoz.
Soult rapidly gathered a new army from the French forces in Andalusia and, joining with the troops retreating before Beresford, he marched to relieve the siege. With intelligence of another approaching force-a Spanish army under Gen. Joaquín Blake-he planned to turn Beresford's flank and interpose his army between the two. However, Soult was again acting on outdated information; unknown to the Marshal, the Spaniards had already linked up with the Anglo-Portuguese corps, and his 24,000 troops now faced a combined Allied army 35,000 strong.
The opposing armies met at the village of Albuera. Both sides suffered heavily in the ensuing struggle and the French finally withdrew on 18 May. Beresford's army was too battered and exhausted to pursue, but was able to resume the investment of Badajoz. Despite Soult's failure to relieve the town, the battle had little strategic effect on the war. Just one month later, in June 1811, the Allies were forced to abandon their siege by the approach of the reconstituted French Armies of Portugal and Andalusia. (From Wiki)

"There is no beating these troops, in spite of their generals. I always thought they were bad soldiers, now I am sure of it. I had turned their right, pierced their centre and everywhere victory was mine-but they did not know how to run!" -Marshal Soult, describing the British infantry after Albuera.
During the battle, the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of foot would suffer terrible casualties of 422 out of 570 enlisted men, being fired on by canister shot and assaulted by the french infantry, yet would stand fast and hold their ground, earning them the nickname of “The Die Hards”, the first recorded use of the phrase.
Sorry but Soult doesn't mention at any moment he's referring to the British infantry in this quote. He may very well refer to the Spanish or the Portuguese, or all of them. Only 25% of the allied army at Albuera was British.
@@lahire4943 While true, Soult had fought and defeated the Spanish and Portuguese before, 25% js substantial but not a majority, so in all likelihood he referred to the British in particular, though who knows
It's not clear Soult was referring to just the British, since the first attack was actually repulsed by the Spaniards, who "stood like stocks" as Wellington later said.
The 57th's colonel William Inglis, when wounded and taken from the field, cried "Die hard 57th, die hard!" hence the nickname. They indeed took almost 90% casualties, highest among other high figures for other regiments. And as Beresford said, they did not give an inch and "died where they stood, all wounds to the front"

Hence why he said "I always thought they were bad soldiers"
@@lahire4943 possibly yes, France also thought badly of the English army as well up until the peninsular war. Then again I think it’s wise to think Soult refered to them as a collective, “these troops” rather than explicitly one nationality, so excuse my previous claim
2:22 unexpected cav charge.
Real life: "do you see them! They are getting closer what should we do? Just look away at the clouds"
😆
PLEASE DO LIFE OF A SOLDIER FOR THE USLESS GUY HE DESERVES IT (or just do life of a solider i really love the series and miss it)
Russian teabag?!
I've not seen this yet but this was the most brural field battle for the British army during the peninsular war and would be one of the scenes were the Spanish army performed heroically facing the French even while sustaining freindly fire from behind and facing frenchcolums before them, since these were proper Spanish regulars in comparison to the poor trained volunteers armies which the French crushed in mass.
Looking forward to this as usually
Also you wanker 25:28 it's not just the Irish who had potato's! We had plenty of famines ourselves!
Battle of Albuera was great battle even for Poles! Polish lancers (which we could see in video, Lancers de la Vistule, Lancers of Vistula) were charging on british formations few times and were close to destroying them! Polish lancers meanwhile Spanish campaign were known as Los Diablos Polacos (Polish devils).
Always staying original,great vid 👍
You still have a love for the game in your voice, when commentating NTW3, Apollo, love it!
Hi Apollo love your ntw3 vids this should be a good one
Keep up the amazing content! Love it!
I literally just watched Redcoat History's video collaboration on the Battle of Albuera, much hype for this
This was one of my favorite battles to watch. Well fought by both sides
It looked chaotic because of the close shots but actually the French did the only thing they could: concentrate most stuff on a flank and try to break it quickly before the allies can reform - zoomed out it was less if a mosh pit and more rolling up the flank and not letting them reform.
The French couldn't just play slow and line up as 3v4, had to use cav advantage.
This is how the battle played out historically and what Soult tried, and the battle was a carnage but the Brits did win, they beat back Soult and defeated his strategic objective. Despite the even horrible casualties both sides, due to larger allied numbers and better French maneuvering (also like in this replay).
Great vid!
Love everything you do man, but when Manor Lords comes out I’m expecting some coverage 😅
Love these vids
Love your vids
What a ferocious battle really shows how vicious the Pennisular War was.
Ur butchering of French reminds me of tat time u got kicked outta that bannerlord clan battle
Haha. What's this story?
The Spanish was worse the pronunciation of albùera killed me 😂
Nice video can u make a video on conquer blade or total war Shogun
I LOVE THE NAPOLEONIC WARS! Great video Apollo
I’ve lived in Florida my whole life and I still get excited when I go to St Augustine.
Love each and every video you do I would love to play with you and your friend and test your might and will
Yoooo Apollo! I have the Napoleon table top game, its called Black Powder by Warlord Games, they also make a dope World War 2 table top game as well. Its a lot of fun and half of the fun is painting them and making them your own but be prepared for several hours of building and painting. If you want a board game that is awesome Napoleonic warfare I highly recommend Commands and Colors: Napoleonics by GMT. Its an excellent game and my friends and I have bought several expansions for it and its hands down one of my most favorite board games of all time. Its less of an investment and setup but still great table top fun. And if you like that game you can try out the medieval series, the Samurai Series, and the best part is all the battles in the Command and Colors series are entirely historical!
I haven’t saw a battle like this in a while
Nothin like a classic 👌🏾
The French had one cavalry corps and two infantry corps in this battle. I was playing the right hand infantry corps, pushing near the town. Tried to keep the momentum going but eventually ran out of steam and got counter attacked by the British. After a good Start our lack of communication caused us to be defeated piecemeal in the second Half of the fight. Still was a lot of fun.
Thanks for showcasing the battle! If you're interested in playing some battles with an emphasis on Aggression, hit me up.
As for points: each house without a number equals one point.
Oh and: mass charges are fine. Blobbing/unit stacking is prohibited.
This whole thing was very cinematic. Props to the players, the aggression was awesome.
I actually got my napoleonic minis right next to me. By the way the "british" in blue are actually portugese
You should play some Fire & Maneuver! It's an awesome game!
Love the history!
Will be playing boardgame 1811 Albuera by Tactical Workshop. Beautiful counters, leader cards, puzzke map.
Nice battle, and great commentary Apollo, we forgave your Spanish hahah, ok i wanna say something to the napoleon community, i wish this game become more famous and make great battles , and teams, like happens to for exampleto Leage of Legends, i believe this game have the potential, the problem ,many gamers these days doesnt care about history , and just like fast paced games
2:51 Usually yes the lt at the end of a word isn't pronounced but for Marshall Soult it's pronounced "Soolt" for some reason.
6:10 This one is the closest to the correct pronunciation and it is actually pretty good.
Nice Battle !
I’ve been to St.Augustine like three times a year and there is one ice cream shop I always go to.

Gotta love starting an afternoon with the British Army fighting the French 🇬🇧💪🏻

@@PixelatedApollo1 bummer. If you think that fort is impressive, go to San Juan, PR. It dwarfs the one in Florida. Anyway, love your videos man. I appreciate everything you do and have been watching for like five years now. Great content!
@@ehartatak haha my Wife's Grandpa is from PR. She has been there!
Slightly disappointed that today's video isn't another Fallout 4. Although this was an amazing battle!
"What if you put the roast beef in the baguette?" Is that what the kids call it nowadays Apollo?
Everyone talks about how the British heavy cavalry captured two French eagles at Waterloo.
But no one talks about how the Vistula Uhlans captured 6 British flags here.
Yep you do pronounce the L and T in Soult
There should be a battle of Leipzig that would be really cool
the best
Do more ntw
I miss third age total war battles
Not a native Spanish speaker (though I'm from a former Spanish colony), but here's how to pronounce Albuera:
"Al-boo-weh-ra"
I hooe this helps, also Spanish is a very easy language when it comes to pronunciations, I mean no offense btw
HEY apollo, If you like RPG games, i recomend Red Dead Redemption 2, its one of the best games out there!

10:05 is this the Battle of Albuera or Fuetes De Oñoro lol? I think something like that actually happened in real life lol
Hope another fallout vid drops in today...

@@PixelatedApollo1 one other thing. Once u complete fallout 4 (if u complete) y don't u try stellaris. Another strategy game but lotta new content and not total war like at all. Would really love to watch u play tat.
This is way more fun to watch than the tryhards trying to do e-sports out of Warhammer Total War.
Hey! In Britain we have good food like sausage rolls >:(
Putting the beef in the baguette...thats exactly what the British are trying to do to the French.

I'm just looking for someone to mod the Assassin's Creed Unity map as a battlefield for total war Napoleon.
RIP Albuera pronounciation
I'm just watching a slaughter here!
Al buerrra
Pronounced "Al-Boo-Where-Ah" or "Al-Boo-Air-Ah"
They don’t let you know the name of the units so you don’t butcher their names 😝
I'm spanish and I find it really funny how apologetic english-speaking people get when pronouncing other languages. Chill....nobody is getting offended
You’d be surprised
there is napoleon to do is win the Battle Of Pennisular Campign
How to pronounce "Albuera"
Al-Bu-era
NOT Ala-Boo-ra
We didn't steal them from the Irish! How dare you!
We stole them from South America
One of the Spanish players are really bad at micro
bruh they should hear your english
test
Just saying that NTW Field Command is way better than NTW3...
Lmao
Tabletop napoleonics....start painting now...then in a year or two you can play a small one 😆
Keep speaking French s'il vous plaît
if you kept the camera a little bit higher you wouldn't lose that much stuff. Your intention is obviously to show the brawl between obsolete 3d models..Not possible to watch the evolution of tactics and maneuvering which is the substance of Napoleonic battle.. I tried but never was able to see anything but sporadic meaningless close-ups of muskets firing. Watching muskets firing at my face without seeing the result of their volley is just hilarious..
