      Not really. The larger figure you show has no connection to islands. That is the size of Sweden including both land and sea (water) under swedish sovereignty. So there's just about 80000 km² (somewhat less than half the size of Great Britain) of water (sea) stretching out to our territorial boundary.

  • @da206hbe
    @da206hbe Před 2 měsíci

    There's is a universal definition for what can be called an island. That's is what Sweden and all countries use when counting their islands. Not just islands along coasts count, but islands in lakes and rivers. Sweden has between 95000-97500 lakes so there are many islands there too. To count as an island it has to be a natural land mass surrounded by water that is above the water surface irrespective of the tide. According to definitions there isn't any limit on how small it can be as long as the aforementioned definitions apply. Of course Sweden doesn't count a stone or rock (or bottle), as mentioned by some idiots here, as an island. Many islands in Sweden are quite sizeable, some large as or larger than hole counties in other countries. By the way, some kilometers of the coast at my summer house, there's an island with several lakes on it. One of them having islands. Islands in a lake on an island in a sea!

  • @da206hbe
    @da206hbe Před 14 dny

    A lot of people here wonders how Sweden, Finland and Norway can have so many islands? Easy. The northern part of Europe was covered by a thick layer of ice (~3000 m) at the last ice age ending about 10000 years ago. When this retracted the ice tore the rock to pieces leaving valleys and lakes with a lot of melted water. Not having the immense pressure and weight from the "Inland Ice" left, the land rose from the sea creating new land and a lot of islands. Sweden has the world record for land elevation. There is a mountain called Skule Mountain that was under water at the last ice age. It's now 286 m over the sea. The region where this is located is called 'The High Coast'. On average this region rises 10 mm/year. Probably it has 10-30 m left to it's former state?
    Countries you would think having a lot of islands, like Indonesia, their islands is most often created by volcanic eruptions or by tectonic movements. Creating islands this way just isn't as effective as tearing apart rock with enourmos ice sheets or gaining land via land elevation. If the ice sheet over Greenland disappears you will see a lot of new lakes there and probably new land gained from the sea.
    If some of the people commenting here used their energy to make some research instead of making moronic comments!

I can confirm this is true because i have been on the coast east of Stockholm and there were unbelievable amounts of islands. It took somr hours to get out of there( this was with boat)That confirms the fact that there is extreme amounts of islands. Thecause to all of these islands counts back to the ice age, roughly 10 thousands years ago. When the ice packet were dragging north, it left a bunch of islands. It has also caused a phenomenom called *_landshöjning_*
      It is that the ice packet has been pressing the ground so much that it gets relieved and gets pushed back up. This process is slow and is still going on
