Klaxon SS6 Air Raid Siren - Pre-Restoration Tests

  • čas přidán 28. 01. 2021
  • Disclaimer: Volume warning, this gets loud.
    I'm unsure if this model name is official, but this is what the makers plate suggests. This siren was modified and sold as the ACA Sentry 95 in the US, under a deal with Klaxon. Nobody's ever found one in the US, though.
    Two tests with the stator removed, essentially turning this into a centrifugal fan, followed by three tests with the stator fitted.
    The restoration will include work to clean and repair the brass, minor electromechanical attention and a full repaint.
    This siren was formerly owned by Scott Bullen.
    This video has been brought to you by al66class59.

      It's Klaxon. I don't know how old this siren is, but I'm not sure if Secomak existed (or at least made sirens) when this was made. The history of the two companies is far too confusing for me xD
      You're right about the Sentry 95 link, this was (apparently) modified and sold under license from Klaxon by ACA. Not that anyone's ever found one in the US.

    • @PyroTech4051
      @PyroTech4051 Před 3 lety +1

      @@al66class59 Secomak was Klaxon’s original name. If you look on some of the older CS8’s boxes and tags, they’re branded by Secomak. I think they changed to Klaxon around the 70’s or late 60’s. And as for the age, ACA advertised the Sentry 95 around 1968 I believe. I’m thinking the SS6 is somewhere around there, probably around the 60’s is when it came out.

    • @al66class59
      @al66class59  Před 3 lety +1

      @@PyroTech4051 Done some research. Klaxon of Birmingham (who made the SS6 above - presumed model name) were founded in 1909. Secomak were founded in 1930. I'm unsure if the Klaxon still extant today that is based in Lancashire is the same company as the 1909 Klaxon from Birmingham, as there's very little information about the latter's full history.
      Either way, a company called Halma purchased 'Klaxon Signals' at some point in the 1980s or 1990s and by 2000 Klaxon incorporated the Secomak brand. 2000 because that's the earliest year the Wayback Machine will take me to on Klaxon Signals' and Secomak's websites.
      The CS8 was indeed a Secomak design originally (dating from around 1952, when Broadmoor got their first sirens). CS8s were still branded Secomak well into the 1980s and I believe some GP8s were even into the 1990s. However, following the Halma takeover of both KSL and Secomak, all the designs for the sirens were moved to Klaxon - and so by 2000, Secomak no longer made sirens. From then on, they've focused solely on air movement products.
      TLDR
      What it sounds like to me is Secomak and Klaxon were different companies and eventually ended up merged - but that assumes the Klaxon that made my siren is the same one that exists now. There's been far too many uses of the Klaxon name for me to be sure tbh xD

      Sorry, only just picked this up! It's still in bits - I had hoped to be able to paint it myself but it's got very fine tolerances with regards to gaps are between the base and rotor/rotor and brass stator etc, and hand-painted layers of paint are too thick, causing friction. Looking like it may need professional respraying at this stage.
      Mechanically sound, it worked fine when I got it and didn't need much doing. Will be getting a longer cable and ideally a cable gland to improve safety with the junction box, however.
