Cumberbatch's Smaug voice marks the first time anything in the PJ movies are better than how I imagined it when I first read Tolkein.
Eh...I thought the overall story for LOTR was handled more succinctly, and with more focus than Tolkien's. Better flow, too.
Benedict is so hot that they have casted him to play a creature who can breathe fire...

as someone who has only watched the movie in german I have to wonder what the english voice sounds like though
the german voiceover was a little strange to me, I found it to be not deep enough for a creature that size and they put weird effects on it that made it sound unnatural (and by unnatural I don't mean the scary cool kind of unnatural)

The fact that Peter mentions that what people will remember, that he knew what I remember was Smaugs voice and the fact that he was ridiculously clever is astounding. What a visionary.
Greatest creature ever created for cinema!
The scene with Smaug and Bilbo were truly one of the few scenes where you could tell Peter didn't want to wing it like he did with the rest of the trilogy. He put the same care into it as he did with the LOTR series, and it ends up remarkable.
SIDE NOTE: I do wish he would have had the prep time for The Hobbit that he did for LOTR, but he didn't even know he was going to do them until the last second.
I'm really glad they made him serpentine. Fafnir is repeatedly called "the snake" and "the worm" and is killed because Sigurd is hiding in a hole and stabs the dragon as he slithers by. As Tolkien practically copied and pasted various aspects of the Lay of Fafnir/The Otter's Ransom, assimilating Fafnir's look for Smaug seems extremely appropriate. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not crying plagiarism on Tolkien. Folk tales are quite literally made to be borrowed and played with. I'm complimenting on the nod to the original source.
I hope that when this comes out on Blu-ray that they'll have some behind the scenes on Benedict doing Smaug's voice.
Yes! Exactly what I was thinking. I couldn't project Benedict at all when they were doing Smaug and Necromancer (obviously, of course, but I still want to be able to squeal, "OMG that's Benedict!")
Elizabeth Dianne Stravinsky Haha yeah me too. Although when I found out Benedict was Smaug and I saw the movie for the second time, I couldn't get the image of him walking around in an empty room pretending to be a lizard with a skin tight suit on out of my head xD
Smaug is just faaantastic! How he looks and Benedict's input (voice) is just amazing. I watch dragon scenes over and over and over. And again! :) Aaaaaaaaamazing!

Smaug is the only reason I get excited about this trilogy. I was not disappointed... except that his screentime wasn't long enough.
A job well done imo, the first dragon in a movie that was actually proper scary

I love Peter and all the actors of the Hobbit but Peter didn't deliver a brilliant "animal", the brilliant artists at Weta did.

Actually, they all did. If you watch some of the production blogs of Hobbit, you will see that evert actor had a lot of makeup, rubber suits, etc...
Freeman is like 30 and has grey hair. #whathappened
People go prematurely gray. It happens. He's still an incredible actor no matter what hair color he has.

Peter Jackson really dropped the ball on this. The Hobbit was suppose to be a fun little side tale and Peter tries to force it into an epic trilogy. Then he ruins Smaug, Tolkien drew Smaug, he had a long thin body, wings as well as arms and legs. Instead Peter basically goes with a wyvern, even changes the original art work on the map of the lonely mountain since he decided to replace Smaug with a wyvern instead of a dragon as Tolkien had depicted. Such a shame and such a waste.
