    The trouble with tuning a standard scale down that low is that notes start going sharp very easily when you pick them or even fret them with too much pressure

    I’ve been thinking about doing a low tuned 25.5 scale guitar to play with. I don’t think I’d use a baritone enough to buy one but a low tuned guitar would be handy and fun. I’ve been planning to order a set of 14-70 strings though. I think it would sound better with heavy strings.

      Jack, and MARTY ! PLEASE READ ( wanted to add to/reply to Jack, also really want YOU to read this. you’ve helped me tremendously. Way More than any other you tube channel..thank you so much !!!🙏😊!)
      I just started taking lessons 3-4 months ago. My first lesson was the first time ever holding a guitar let alone playing. Never played an instrument ever. Knew not a thing about music other than I love it. I did at age 10, in school, had to take a music class. got stuck with the saxophone lmao 😂. I swear this is a true story, lasted about a week and had to quit. I was giving MYSELF a severe headache any time I practiced. I’m sure my family was secretly thrilled.
      Ok back to guitar, my lessons are only a half hour weekly. I’m sure everyone who plays can agree a half hour isn’t enough time, especially being brand new. So I started watching you tube videos in between my weekly lessons and
      out of ALL the MANY lesson channels (trust me, I’ve checked out sooooo many ) I’ve ALWAYS felt and still do, Marty teaches in an easier way to grasp , much easier to understand how to strum or finger placement to make a chord. Just breaks it down to the simplest way, to get you started, then obviously at your own pace , speed it up to actually create a proper sound or riff or entire song.
      Love the energy from him also. Omg some people are so boring and hard to follow anything they are teaching. Marty is awesome, so fun to watch and actually understand what to do. I learned way more from his videos than my lessons. I went to a lesson one day. Still hadn’t learned a single chord yet, and just started playing a riff MARTY taught me. I impressed my teacher. he actually corrected a particular part he said i was doing wrong but he went on you tube to hear the song and see the original guitar player, and he corrected himself, said I actually did play it correctly and thanks to MARTY. I outsmarted my teacher lol. He’s a great teacher tho and a lot of fun We laugh a lot and he is very encouraging and tells me that I am doing well all the time , I accuse him of lying to me about that, jokingly but being serious too because I need to be told I suck or whatever lol. I won’t properly learn if I never get constructive criticism. he is the only “in person” way to get that feedback.
      Anyway, I don’t want to make this longer than it already is.... I just wanted to tell Jack I agree with exactly what he said. And MARTY, well I think I already made my point clear. I can’t thank you enough for the help learning guitar especially as a brand new clueless beginner......I’ve questioned myself , often, why I pay $135 monthly when I Learn better from online videos for free. So , Thank you Jack and best of luck In your future learning/playing guitar.
      And MARTY, thank you again!!! I’m going to be writing to you separately with some questions and hope to get some advice/tips.
      Oh and Jack, honestly if you have any advice or tips to help me, I would greatly appreciate it as well. Or anyone reading this for that matter. The more help I can get. Will be so beneficial for my continued learning. THANKS TO ALL !!! 🤘 ROCK ON! Or whatever else y’all play. Country on 🤘. Blues on 🤘 etc.. on !🤘😊🎸❤️

    Probably the best way is to buy a set of 0.09 strings for a 7 string guitar and just use the 6 lower strings, once discarded string number one. This way the tension of each string is right when tuning the whole guitar 5 semitones lower than a regular guitar. All strings will become with the right tension. Using a capo on the fifth fret will make the guitar to sound very similar to a regular guitar, at the expense of having a range of playing with 5 frets less than normal.
    There is no need to buying a baritone guitar if we just want to experience the milder tones of a baritone, which I find very pleasing if we are playing alone at home instead of in a group with a bass, a rithm and a lead guitar. Very easy just using for a while our regular guitar replacing the strings with a set of a 7 string guitar and enjoy.

I didn't know about baritone strings at the time, so I just bought a 7-string set I think they were heavy, and I just left off the light string. I READ SO MANY COMMENTS ON THIS AND OTHER VIDEOS , YOU ARE FAMOUS AND LOVED LOL. YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR , WE ARE YOUR GROUPIES 🤘🖤🎸😂😁👍👏👏👏🔥🎼🎵🎶🎸❤️ seriously. THANK YOU so much for helping me and so many other people. I would love to take one on one lessons with you. I love my teacher now , We have fun. But I am not learning enough in the 4 months I’ve been taking lessons. Mainly because they are 30 minutes and once a week. Not nearly enough time for a brand new, with no previous musical knowledge or talent at all, which is how I started watching CZcams videos, found you in many beginner lessons and you taught in a really easy way to grasp whatever you teach. You have no idea how much you have helped me. After only a few weeks of lessons, I learned a riff from you, played it for my teacher one day, he corrected me thinking I was playing a part wrong. He looked up the actual guitarist from the band that the song is from to see how he plays it. Then apologized saying that I was actually doing it right all along. Thanks to you!! I felt so good and proud of myself that I actually taught my teacher how to play the song properly!! And he was impressed with me and that’s an amazing feeling too. I LOVE TO PLAY GUITAR! and it’s just for fun. For me. I’m trying to get into the music industry actually, behind the scenes not performing, god that would require an actual miracle to allow me to be that good that anyone would let me perform live or want to see me perform live lol, yea it would be friggin amazing 😉 but I live in the real world and ummm ya that’s not going to happen to me. And at my age , if it takes years to become that good to be in a band, or perform live and especially become somewhat famous and be an opening act let alone the time it would take to headline. I’d be like 60-70 years old, or dead ( jk , god forbid. Though playing live as a ghost would be original and pretty cool to watch. No? Is that my own weird kinda style only?) ugh forgot my point now. Thinking about me as a ghost in a rockstar outfit playing bad ass guitar with other ghosts like the doors or queen etc etc. and by then these still living artists would be ghosts. Well Possibly, like Halestorm , Alice Cooper, Godsmack, omg Metallica!!! Lmao 🤣 I know I’m nuts. Just ignore all that. I am very imaginative at times. But also a bit weird. love that about me tho. Makes me different. Unique. Interesting. And hopefully fun too.
    Anyway, totally off topic and forgot my point now. So I am going to say THANK YOU FOR THE HELP!!!! I look forward to more lessons and getting better. And I would love to chat with you privately and get some advice or ask questions ( some id be embarrassed to post publicly. In case I sound like a total idiot)
    And I’m going to stop typing now since I’ve written 3 long messages/ comments under this one video alone and I am probably going to be laughed at by anyone who actually takes the time to read them. Sooo. Ok 👍 til next time. 🤘🤘🎸🎸🖤🖤😊😊

    I got used to playing in C standard with .010's on a 24.75" scale guitar. It's really easy to bend out of tune at first, but you gradually develop a lighter touch. I keep my Tele in Eb to keep my hand strength up. Switching back and forth is no problem--you'd be surprised how easy it is to swap once you get the muscle memory for both.

  • @wharman1

    Can you convert a baritone to a normal guitar? I want a Squire Cabronita NORMAL guitar but they only come as baritone. Can I swap to a normal neck and still have a normal intonation (with a setup). The internet is FULL of ways to convert a normal guitar to baritone but none the other way. Seems like it shouldn't be an issue.

  • @lichkrieg4898
    @lichkrieg4898 Před 3 lety +8

    25.5 inch is enough with .12-.62's to tune B to B and even A to A. setup is touchy without repositioning the the bridge. However it's very doable for just about 0 effort. I find even with 8 strings drop E is fine as short as 26.5 with .11-.85's(it's tough the first day or so). However we lose something with thicc boi strings, without active pickups or passives that have a thinner low end it can get muddy. Nothing an EQ pedal, along side proper amp settings and a solid ts pedal can't help in conjunction with each other. Longer scale will always be better for lower tuning, but a $10 pack of strings and using the tools you already have can get you 80% or more of the way there. Plus there's nothing like the balls of a nasty A# flat 4th diad on a 7 let alone the F flat 4th diad on the 8 string....my balls *finally actually* dropped at 30 and my life was a lie until that point.
    also if you read this far......*penis*

    Making a 25.5 scale length a baritone CAN be done. A band like Wage War is a good example of this as both guitarist are playing with Fenders and are in a unique F# tuning. But yes it takes a little finesse to get it right. Thicker strings do help ALOT. Just make sure to go wound G string as plain steel is thick fishing line in feel. But if you're more streamlined in your setups then a baritone would be the choice.
    I'll probably end up owning a baritone anyway for flexibility sake so I can play below B or A, but my smaller hands are just more familiar with the 25.5. The thick strings don't bother me, but that's me...
    Nevertheless, it can be done.

    Hi sir,
    I could really appreciate if you could enlighten me with the following problem I am facing for a very long time. I've completed your modes course and want to move on with your theory part but before I get there I couldn't solve a practical question. After memorizing each root note on each pattern of the major scale I finally know each position's root notes for majors scale all over the neck but when I switch to other modes than Ionian for example, the dorian mode the root note moves. My question is do I have to memorize each root note for dorian on the same patterns all over again or for example you only know the root note of major scale but move it relatively according to the mode you use very fast in your head when you are improvising. If I memorize positions of root notes in each pattern for all of the remaining 6 modes wouldn't I be confusing them. Thanks a lot for your time and appreciate everything you do for guitar community for people like me (passionate but lost!).
    Kind Regards,

      cangozpinar , I have yet to take a lesson course like you have from Marty. I’m definitely going to after reading this, so thank you 😊.
      I’m still brand spanking new at guitar, only been about 3/4 months and I take weekly 30 min lessons. Clearly not enough. I started watching Marty’s videos in between my lessons for the extra help and I learned so much more from the “free” you tube videos than paying $135 monthly for one on one lessons. Although my teacher is awesome, and fun and I do enjoy it so much. I def don’t learn enough and by now I should be playing soooo much better or at least know way more. I am going to check out the courses you took. In all honesty, I can save myself so much money if I just use Marty , and maybe throw in some diff people later on when I know enough. What I should know after 4 months of lessons that I don’t. And that is so frustrating to me. I so desperately want to be able to play and learn new songs. Even write my own. I’m learning for fun. For me. Not planning to be in a band or get famous. Always wanted to learn to play. I have painful hands tho due to 10 + years of doing massage therapy and didn’t think I’d be able to. But I finally decided to try. I realized that I can try, if my hands hurt too much I’d stop. But if not, awesome. I’m good so far and I LOVE TO PLAY SO MUCH, even though I suck and still a newbie learning basics. I want to and am looking into getting into the music industry ( behind the scenes, not performing) music has become my passion. It’s therapeutic and got me through the worst time of my life , the entire past year , 2019
      It literally saved my life no joke , which is why I finally tried lessons, and playing is also a great form of therapy for me. Keeps my mind focused on the music only. Hours will pass without me realizing how long I was practicing. I wanted to reply to you specifically to not just thank you but also tell you I can totally understand how you feel. Being frustrated because you want to learn/do something so bad, but also so passionate about playing guitar in general.
      I’d love to chat more with you and maybe be able to learn from you actually as well based on your own experience with learning how to play. I won’t be offended if you don’t want to. I promise. But wanted to ask regardless. I think everyone, especially beginners , can help each other even with the simplest things that they may do different than me. Maybe an easier way to use my fingers to make a chord ( an issue I have, I have long fingers , and wide, I’m very tall so big hands lol. But I cannot get them to work right. To stretch out onto 3 diff frets or even squish 3 fingers into a single fret. It’s like I can’t win either way and w the lengthy fingers I have it should be easier for me. Ugh 😩 so frustrating, makes me sad too , I try so hard. My fingers don’t wanna cooperate at all )
      Anyway, that’s all I guess. This message is long already. I’m so sorry. I hope you reply back and MARTY PLEASE READ AND REPLY TO CANGOZPINAR!! I’d love to see your reply as well to the questions asked.
      thank you again 😊❤️😊🎸😊

    I’m on a 25.5 charvel tuned to drop A# or drop B with 12-64 gauge strings. And the tension is good. I tried an 11-56 set with a 68 on the low E but that wasn’t feeling great. Interested in the sub zero baritone 6 with a 30 inch scale… only $300

    Ty for this video it helped me make some important decisions about my playstyle and understanding of how to best use a baritone style. After this video i feel like if you were going to commit to this on a standard guitar with baritone tuning you will likely want to cut the thickest strings in a few centimeters to avoid that buzz and the type of strings play a role as well if you are doing so on an acoustic? nickel frankly sucks compared to brass. Just some thoughts and feedback. Again ty for the presentation it gives us things to consider here.

    @martymusic Thank you so much for this video! I’ve never had the ability to buy a baritone. One song I’ve always wanted to learn is bilgewater blues by jimmy herring. I met him in person and asked him how to play it on standard tuning and he said the best advice he could give me is to play it in A, and mess around with whatever pedals I had. Can you show me how?

      Jack M0r53 I will for sure try it out thanks, but when I said Ionian-locrian I meant through. Meaning I learned all seven. Also, “music theory” is pretty broad, so what do you suggest something i can start on . I’ve already been studying chord formulas, but it just hard to memorize

    • @Jack-ic1kb
      @Jack-ic1kb Před 4 lety

      Well i would try some solo formulas along with learning something like how to use all of the frets in one solo and make it sound good, if you can do that then you can do a lot of soloing off the top of you head no problem, and try looking into some techniques to help better understand tones

    I have a 6 string jackson kelly normal scale stock pickups it's tuned to B-standard abd it sounds amazing i just use bigger string (a 62 set) and it's not floppy at all so in my opinion a normal guitar can be used as a baritone guitar if you have the right string gauge on it

  • @SleepingLionsProductions
    @SleepingLionsProductions Před 7 měsíci

    I recently modified one of my old strat type guitars 25.5 inch scale into a 27 inch baritone. Previously, i had a set of really heavy gauge strings (i think 12-60) and it still sounded really flubby for B standard.
    After the conversion, some 11-48s at b standard sounds really clear and sharp with the right distortion. I hate saying the tone is in the guitar, but in the case of downtuned Djent, it really is cuz it gets that clarity from the string tension
