Sheep is my favorite on Animals. It's uncharacteristically upbeat for a Pink Floyd song and that outro riff is amazing

I'm with you. To me as great as Sheep is, there is a slow burn happening- a great song made even greater by it's uplifting ending. That outro section with Gilmour's rhythm/but sounds prominent enough to be lead. That's the big payoff, right after Waters sings, "get out of the road, if you want to grow old..." What a golden moment for The Floyd & their fans alike !! Me thinks it was probably Gilmour or Richard Wright responsible for that uplifting moment. That was within their M.O. to do such a thing- but for this particular song ? I'm not sure... Uplifting key & chord changes were usually not Waters' thing & Mason's input was not always near the other there's musical capabilities. (But, Mason did sometimes helping with the arrangement puzzles....)
Sheep reminds me, in a way, of Supper's Ready when the chord changes on Banks' Mellotron brass sound. Right after Gabriel sings, "I've been so far from here, far from your loving arms..." & just before "now I'm back again..." Right at that point ? POW !! What a payoff at that juncture of the song. Truly !!
This is musical knowledge of how to have an uplifting addition into the music that take a song to the next level emotionally.
Unrelated stuff, but this also reminds me of a concert story that Ruth Underwood told about a Zappa & The Mothers show she saw in NYC at the Garrick Theater.
Same kind of idea, but Sheep & Supper's Ready were fully realised pieces that have uplifting moments added to the piece to uplift the written piece....
Zappa's was different according to Ms. Underwood (Ruth Komanoff at the time, not married yet) & here's how....
During the Zappa piece, the band went into a long, droning, dissonant section. She said it was seemingly endless & annoyingly so. Just on & on. And Frank Zappa acting the part of conductor with no need for the duties of a conductor as it was clear the only thing going on stage was individual band members improvising this continuing droning sound on the low end of their individual instruments, an amorphous blob of sound that required no timekeeping or direction, it seemed to her...
Then out of this endless cacophony came one of the more recognizable & beautiful melodies from Stravinsky's 'Rite of Spring'- the big payoff for the audience's patience up until that point, or so it seemed to Ms. Underwood anyway....
She was absolutely stunned by what she just heard & seen- she was dumbfounded by the endless, monolithic ugliness and then the sudden beauty. The juxtaposition of the two actually made her cry, she recalled.
She was already a fan & hoped to join the band when she was done studying percussion at Juilliard's music conservatory. And 3 or 4 years later, she was a band member & married Mothers member Ian Underwood & brought her marimba, vibes, glockenspiel, xylophone, massive bass, timpani, gongs & huge talent to The Mothers.
The 1973-'74 band (fun fact) of Zappa & The Mothers had a set of brothers in it, (Walt Fowler on trombone & Tom Fowler on bass) and a married couple, (Ruth Underwood on percussion & Ian Underwood on keyboards, saxophone, flute & various woodwind instruments)
I love to share with you guys & ladies. I also love you sharing with the rest of us.
      Music Is The Best !!
I'm of Hungarian extraction. It is said that Hungarians can't help but to think that way- along with a good buzz, it is also said... 😎🇺🇸 &🇭🇺

Just as Yes grabs you, carries and uplifts you toward a glowing light, Pink Floyd emotionally pulls you down into a dark psychosis that is within us all. The sheer power of their unsurpassed craftsmanship and genious arrangements create a moving mosaic of fear, insanity, panic and intellectual reckoning with very dark forces. By contrast, after pulling off the headphones, the world doesn't quite seem so bad! Mastery in musicscape!

Some acute observations, well done. As someone else noted the prayer is the 23rd Psalm, it's often read at funerals at least in movies and TV shows so that lends it a dark edge. This is my favorite on the album, just love the keyboards and that skittery descending guitar riff during the breaks. This is about the last time we get to hear all 4 members working together to craft the music.

To add to something you said in this one, Pink Floyd is one of those bands who has this amazing ability to put you in the mood of the song. Their music fits their lyrics perfectly. This is my favorite Floyd album. The lyrics are remarkable and the music, once again, fits it perfectly. Pigs On The wing Parts 1 and 2 are perfect bookends. Roger was putting himself in the role of a "dog" with a stark warning. In the end, part 2 gives you hope that you can escape that fate of "being found dead on the phone, dragged down by the stone," by having someone in your life that you care about and cares about you. A home, a center, a base. And interestingly, after 55 years of being on this planet, I can attest, he was right.

What gets me is that Johnny Rotten and the sex pistol folks were running around wearing "I Hate Pink Floyd" t-shirts at the time of the release of Animals complaining that the Floyd were too "establishment." Now...what is more anti-establishment: this, or some adolescent screaming incoherently about hating the queen, or hating that their parents won't let them spray paint public walls?

Of course most wore Floyd shirts because 'Money' or 'we don't need no education' are catchy pop tunes. Those folks are into trends, not the music. Those folks never understood the meaning. To them, it was one more 'Afternoon Delight.' So when someone claims to be anti-establishment and also claims to hate the most dangerous anti-establishment band out there--I question their cognitive ability. @@fuckamericanidiot

Attention should be given to the final two lines of "Sheep"
"You'd better stay home and do as you're told
Get out of the road if you wanna grow old..."
That's the leadership of the new Sheep Regime talking. So, even as the sheep take over, a new sort of oppression begins. It reminds me of the overall theme of "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who. Have your revolutions. Nothing will change in the end. "Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss."

In January, sadly the weather did not allow it, so we took our keg, shrooms and tripped at the house. This album will always join us in the night. Sitting on the roof, snowing lightly and Sheep playing. To make a long story short....... One should never try and leap from a roof to a large pine tree 8ft. from the edge..... I always took it as a personal attack that I was such a sheep in my early days..... by the way, I made it to the tree, my sweat suit shredded, my glasses mangled in the branches but I took the leap and that day changed me. lol.

Things weren't going well. Tensions in the band were at their worst. Waters already denied Wright any writing input (fired him after the tour following the album). This song in particular, but the whole album is very electric. It sounds like a steel cable that's stretched to the breaking point. Waters already had full directing power at this point. And he was literally enraged.
All this rage, anger and tension came out as one of the very best produced albums of all time. And Sheep is the climax of all of it. Pink Floyd at their hardest. The way the sustained vocals blend into the modulated synthesizer always impressed me. Of their "Big Three", Animals is by far my favorite, and Sheep my favorite track.

    Fabulous reaction, Justin.
A little background for you: The tracks "Sheep" and "Dogs" were originally called "Raving and Drooling" and "Gotta be Crazy", and should have been released on the follow-up to DSOTM with "Shine on you crazy Diamond". During the Floyd's winter tour of the UK in '74 the three tracks formed the first half of the stage show, with DSOTM forming the second half and "Echoes" the encore. During the Nov 19th gig at Trentham Gardens Ballroom (UK) a bootleg was recorded, which subsequently sold in huge quantities. Fearing that sales of the studio album would suffer the band decided to keep "Shine..." but shelved the tracks for a later project, which became "Animals".
The ancestry is clear when you see that "You've gotta be crazy..." is the first line of "Dogs" and that the "Sheep" lyric "Bleating and babbling, we fell on his neck with a scream" was originally "Raving and drooling....etc".
That same Trentham Gardens gig was my first ever concert: some 3000 people sitting quietly cross-legged and absolutely rapt with what we were hearing and seeing.

In it's originally-intended form, the 2 parts of Pigs On the Wing was actually just 1 single song with a guitar solo bridging the 2 halves. But the guitar solo was never really accepted by the band, as it was actually played by Snowy White, a man who would go on in later years to be one of their back-up guitar players in concert. David did not play on it because on the day he was due to record the solo he couldn't make it to the studio because his wife was giving birth to one of his children, but Roger didn't want to delay the recording sessions, so he had Snow play it. But it never really satisfied anyone, so it was decided to split the song in half and do away with the solo altogether. However, for reasons I can only guess at, the original version of POTW as one single song with a Snowy guitar solo DID make it on to the 8-track version of the album, making the 8-track version of Animals rather pricey if you look it up on Ebay. You can find it on CZcams fairly easily however, so you don't have to sink $$ into the 8-track if you want to hear it.

Well done JP! Animals is perhaps the darkest most bitingly acerbic album in rock. Interesting that you mention the robotic element. I take it you haven't heard Welcome To The Machine yet. There's a single edit of Pigs On The Wing combining both parts with a guitar interlude in the middle by Snowy White their new touring guitarist. Pink Floyd had one of the most elaborate surround sound systems and the ending guitar theme from Sheep was reverberating from the back of the hall. Wish I was there 🐑

Early versions, with diffrent lyrics, of sheep and dogs along with Shine on your crazy diamonds were part of their setlist since 1974. Even before the Wish you were here album (1975).
In fact, the 1975 album originally was supposed to contain these 3 songs. Their live set list didn’t change much from 1974 to 1977.
It is interesting to listen to these three tracks from 1974.
The following tracks can be found in the Experience 2-CD and Immersion box set editions of Wish You Were Here:
"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" (early version)
"Raving and Drooling" (early version of "Sheep")
"You've Got to Be Crazy" (early version of "Dogs")

From an era when music meant something and you physically had to get off your arse, get on the bus, spend your cash and then go home and bang the vinyl on the deck and feel such a rush as the new music sucked you in, I remember buying this album and being knocked back by the sheer brilliance. Wow that bass pedal in Sheep still gets me saying to anyone who will listen “ can you feel that?” Same as in Firth if Firth. 😰

Hi there. Just watched your reaction. If you liked the way Roger's vocal morphed into a synth as you said you did, you should also like a very similar effect that was done a few years earlier by Styx on their 2nd album in a song called "A Day", sung by the late John Curulewski. It's a very underrated song(not to mention the entire album), but is one of my personal faves and there is a line that goes "Content to rest awhile, pondering the motion of time" and the word "time" repeats over and over again as he continues to sing more lyrics and by the time the verse is finished the "time" word has metamorphosed into a weird warbly synth effect. This blew me away when I first heard it when I was about 10 in the mid 70s and pre-dates Floyd's use of a similar effect by at least 4 years.

  • @joerenaud8292
    @joerenaud8292 Před 3 lety

Your breakdown of this song and the entire album is spot on. You're one of the very few who understood it right from the start without ever having heard it before. This was Roger Waters written rendition of George Orwell's "Animal Farm" novel, with his own additions, of course. The Pigs on the Wing (3 different ones) song, was originally a dig at a woman by the name of Mary Whitehouse who during that time in the UK was repressing the people with social sexual repressive political dogma. Waters now uses that song against whatever regime he doesn't agree with which today is the current Trump admin. David Gilmore did use a talk box creating those distorted pig sounds as well as the guitar work in that song. The whole album is done so well but because the the main songs were so long they rarely if ever got any kind of radio play so they became obscure to most people unless you were an avid Pink Floyd fan.

After they went off stage, they came back for an encore of "Money". That was it in Milwaukee, but it's well documented that they usually did at least one other encore number, most often "One Of These Days".

Sheep is definitely my favorite song on the album. I love the repetitive bass line played by David (not Roger as noted below), just a constant rhythmic drone. Love the jazzy Rhodes piano and Hammond organ work by Wright. Listening to this just now, I also got hints of 'Run Like Hell' which, of course, came after Sheep so I suppose it is more accurate to say while listening to 'Run Like Hell' that it reminds me of Sheep in parts. :-) Minor historical fact, Pink Floyd would often preview songs from upcoming albums when they were on tour. I have a bootleg of a show where they performed this song, but it wasn't in its final form and on the bootleg it was called 'Raving and Drooling'. The song was performed at Wembley in 1974 so this is music that was kicking around for a bit before it showed up on the album. There is a recording of this on CZcams as well.

Doing the complete album listen / review will provide further rewards / insights . Perhaps you can already hear why Animals is a top choice for many Floyd fans .
My take on the album - think ' when pigs fly ' as this is the phrase that 'pigs on the wing ' is referencing . The album begins with a sense of doubt/pessimism that things ( societal structure ) will ever change and then it goes on to present the classes of 'players' within society . As we hear , the sheep eventually stop accepting their' lot in life ' and achieve an overthrow of the system ( the power of the dogs is dead ) .
Then , we come back round to ' when pigs fly ' again - but , this time its celebrating the change that occurred and is basically saying ' pigs DID fly ' as the oppressive system was liberated . To me , its an extended metaphor - and to make things more interesting , the truth is it was written by Roger Waters regarding the relationship he had with his new wife , that he was delighted he found someone who truly could be his equal partner .
Regardless of interpretation - enjoy the complete play thru now and we'll wait for the album review .
Perhaps now its time to revisit APP I Robot album and continue that journey as well - another great concept album that should ultimately lead to a complete review as well .

Loosely based on Animal Farm, which most of us read in grade school. In the book, the revolution was against the farmer, and the pigs took over with the dogs as the "peacekeepers" and eventually became the same as the farmers they vilified. Animals ends a little more hopefully with the sheep revolting against the pigs and dogs.

Sheep is definitely my favorite song on the album, although Dogs comes close. I love the way it opens so peacefully the transitions into the heavy part. This might be the hardest rocking song that Pink Floyd has ever written (although One of These Days and Run Like Hell are also contenders). Pink Floyd tends to be remembered for the bluesy/spacey jams and chilled out/ relaxed mood, but they really could rock when they wanted to.
As far as the album is concerned, it's definitely in my top 5 Pink Floyd albums. But it does fall short of their greatest works: DSOTM, The Wall, WYWH and Meddle for one reason: too much Waters on vocals. While I love Roger's voice and he sounds especially good on this album, I feel like he dominates too much on this album (and on the next three albums). Gilmour has a much better voice IMO and he only had two sections on this album: The beginning of Dogs and the barely heard prayer section on Sheep. Also it would have been nice to hear Wright's voice somewhere. Wright's voice is pretty prominent on the early albums, but after DSOTM his voice was just sorta dropped. It wasn't until 1996's Division Bell that he finally had a lead vocal again.
