Yep. That's pure poetry, alright. Also, not as purely poetic, but equally expressive in terms of what happens to people who obey authority:
_Meek and obedient you follow the leader down well-trodden corridors into the valley of steel._

I was 22 in 1977, when 'Animals' was released. My first listen was with headphones.....sitting in the dark, except for a little Christmas tree with the blinking lights. Oh yes....I MAY have been a bit stoned. After all the decades.....I still haven't made up my mind which is my favorite song....'Dogs' or 'Sheep'.....but I think it might be the Pink Floyd album I return to most often. It changes over the years.

My first listen was also a little inebriated and with headphones. Travel to Tucson to see the concert. We were stunned when they flew the pig or was that stoned. I grew up country listening to country western still do but Floyd has always been my favorite group.
Also seen the wall a momentary lapse of reason. I seen the last one 7 rows back. It was then I realized just how they could be so exact while performing live with such a large repertoire. Everyone was actually reading sheet music. This song probably better than any other shows just how good they really were with perfect pitch and tone.

Yeah. The Urban Shaman cannot "really understand" what this album is driving at without a quick read of Animal Farm. The book itself is basically an indictment of Leninist communism, and the horrors it can unleash upon the unwary thanks to basic human nature.

It's not really about "Leninist communism" in particular at all, but about much deeper themes pertaining to power, control, obedience, and so on. Everything sung about on the album can be readily identified in practically every human society that has ever existed throughout recorded history.

So they recorded this before Star Wars or Battlestar G. Some of the production here is 1976/77c, bit these songs on Animals were all written and performed before the previous album, Wish You Were Here. They knew they had something magical, but also had the sense that it wasn’t the right time. This is by far the most underrated album in rock history, for me.

I haven't checked to see if you've listened to Shine On You Crazy Diamond, but part 2 of that song starts off with the same rolling bass as Sheep and it definitely has some Animals vibes to it.

This is the spoken distorted part:
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by.
With bright knives He releaseth my soul.
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places.
He converteth me to lamb cutlets,
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger.
When cometh the day we lowly ones,
Through quiet reflection, and great dedication
    Master the art of karate,
    Lo, we shall rise up,
And then we’ll make the bugger’s eyes water.
    It’s a play on the psalm 23
The dogs are business men/women and people that will do anything to succeed. Pigs are politicians and people of authority. And sheep are the people that stand on the sideline that the dogs and pigs attack and use.

  • @Number_51

Interesting you putting "Dogs" and "Sheep" together like that. Both songs were actually in their live rotation as "You've Gotta Be Crazy" and "Raving and Drooling", along with "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", in 1974 (even before Wish You Were Here was released). The songs were further polished and lyrics slightly refined for their inclusion in Animals 1977 release. To me it's always felt like both songs were more mature than "Pigs", which was written closer to the time of recording the album and never played live and given the chance to evolve before the album came out.
Along those lines, it's interesting to note that DSotM was performed live almost in it's entirety as early as 1971.

Then, pour another, woof that down too, then pour a third one and go turn off all the lights. Put any Pink Floyd record on. Animals much like the Wall but more so exemplifies what is playing out today. Especially this song.
You have the Sheep which are the Mindless masses. The dogs that are the ruthless businessman. And the pigs the ones that try to set the moral ground for everyone else.
So the lines "you better stay home and do as you're told," "stay out of the road if you want to grow old" sounds like what we're hearing from certain individuals today such as wearing a face mask or when they locked everyone down because it was for your own good and if you don't get inoculated you'll never grow old. Things never change and history repeats itself. Today the world is starting to embrace fascism just as they did in Germany under Hitler. But the ideology is much like Stalin's or China's Mao Zedong.

Pigs (3 different ones), is my favorite because of the talk box which has been used rarely by PF and the ending riff which could have been stretched out more because I feel we were ripped off at the end fading out while Gilmor is shredding like an ape on steroids, then Sheep and then Dogs.

It's obvious what it all means. Roger Waters who was the main writer for all Floyd's biggest selling albums and who's songs made Floyd legendary was and still is a Revolutionary against this corrupt completely lying Capitalist System. Animals is a completely Revolutionary Anti-Capitalist Album and Floyd in general were a very Anti-System Anti-Capitalist band mainly because Roger Waters is who was their main song writing talent.. The different animals on the Animals Album metaphorically although quite directly in some of the lyrics depict the different characters which keep the life on this planet climate destroying Capitalist System going. The Sheep are the Maj of the public who are easily led by the brainwashing Mainstream Media the MSM to keep Capitalism going who eventually on the song realise what's always been going on and rise up to overthrow the Unelected Richest their Masters and the lyric "& What a Surprise, A look of Terminal Shock in your eyes" sarcastically means it's not like it hasn't been obvious all along. Roger Waters also predicts rising sea levels because of Capitalism on 1973s Dark Side of the Moon Album where one of the lyrics written by and predicted by Waters back in 1973 says "& if there is no room left upon the hill" which is him predicting rising sea levels because of Capitalism back in 1973 before studies on the climate were done. There's also parts in Floyd's music that the Dr Who theme music was based on if you listen very closely. Dr Who is a very famous UK Sci Fi Series. That's apart from being genius musicians. Roger Waters the main song writing talent behind all of Floyd's most famous and legendary Albums who's written lots of solo albums too barely gets a mention or named individually as the main creator of all their most famous works, barely gets a mention for it in the Mainstream media, but then that's because he's a Revolutionary so don't want to give him any credit
