This is a place many viewers recommended to us last year when we visited nearby Whitby and we were surprised when we saw it for ourselves. We also visit Whitby (which is becoming one of our favorite places in the UK) and check out some new things we missed last time.

London, by the very fact that it is the capital city, is definitely "the real UK" too.

@@totallypixelatedLondon does not represent the UK at all.
London is a separate entity, no longer recognisable as British.
It's a multicultural melting pot from all over the world and very few people outside of the M25 still think London still represents Britain.
For the record, I'm not saying that's a good or bad thing, it's just the way it is.

Yes really. Stand looking at The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Tower Bridge etc or even go for a pint in a pub on Wimbledon Common and tell me that doesnt represent part of the UK. It most certainly does.

My Great Grandfather was the FIRST ever policeman in Robin Hood's Bay! He was sent there to stamp out the smuggling in around 1890. His house (The Old Police Station) appears at 1:23. A lot of the stuff he confiscated is in the Smuggling Museum at the top of the hill near the top car park.
Glad you enjoyed your visit, it's certainly a quirky little place.

As a photographer i have always loved Yorkshire. It's beautiful landscapes, pretty villages and lots of history. Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby, York, Brimham Rocks, Malham Cove, Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, Fountains Abbey and i could go on and on, a truly wonderful part of the UK.

  • @jonathangoll2918

Although his main house was in Beverley, my grandfather had a second home in Robin Hood's Bay (West Quarter). In her giddy youth in the 1940s my mother remembered having a lift up and down the hill on a motorcycle...
I love Whitby too. With friends we've rented a house in the winter. When the fog rolls in it's gloriously spooky. Remember that both Bram Stoker (Dracula) and Lewis Carroll ( Alice in Wonderland) stayed on West Cliff. ( The 'Walrus and the Carpenter' is based on the beach at Whitby.)
I find the Church at the top of steps more interesting than the Abbey. It is older (c.1100) and has a rarely-preserved 18th-century interior, with the old-fashioned box pews.
A gem few see is Whitby Museum. They've deliberately kept it old-fashioned, and it has a wonderful collection of model ships.
A great band of Jurassic rocks cross England, and form the cliffs at Whitby. They are highly fossiliferous, which is why the ammonites are a symbol of Whitby. ( It's not usually realised that many creatures became extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs; ammonites did too - they are a fossil cephalopod.) A coal-like substance hardened into 'jet', which has been used as jewellery. I've also seen a dinosaur footprint nearby.
But be careful round the cliffs. In the Ice Ages, great ice sheets from Scandinavia came across the North Sea; so the tops of the cliffs and the gaps in the Jurassic rocks are filled with the muck the ice sheets brought, and it's unstable!

Another recommendation to visit Staithes, Captain Cook was born and raised in Marton (now part of Middlesbrough), the house he was born in was dismantled brick by brick and sent to Australia and rebuilt there, which was our loss, he went to school at Great Ayton a few miles away and then started his employment in Staithes before moving to Whitby.

I'm an American who lived in the UK for two years and still visit regularly. I lived a short distance from london when I lived in the UK because of my job, and I've had my fill of that area. When I visit the UK now, I fly into Manchester, pick up my car, and then I'm off to Yorkshire. It's the most beautiful part of the country as far as I'm concerned, and it's the area my family immigrated from eons back, so I kind of feel like I'm coming home. The people are very nice as well, so that's another plus. You're blessed to live in such a beautiful place.

I lived York as a teen and when I was about 14 we did a week long school geography trip in that area. Every day we would get dropped off somewhere random in small groups with a packed lunch and we’d have to make our way to a specific destination completing tasks on the way. Robin Hoods Bay was one of the destinations. The weather was gorgeous all week, we had a boom box with Guns and Roses on cassette for entertainment on our hikes. Life was sweet 😄

I'm an American who lived in the UK for two years and still visit regularly. I love the UK particularly Yorkshire, its where my family immigrated from eons ago, so it feels like coming home in a way. As far as fish and chips go, I like mine with mushy peas and curry, but also gravy. I had never eaten fish and chips with gravy until I went to Yorkshire, now I'm hooked. You're blessed to live in such a beautiful country.

You hit the nail on the head, i think if you're by the seaside/somewhere with active fishermen, then any of the local fish and chip places are more than likely to be good. The big problem is how a chippy dinner, which used to be something really cheap, has skyrocketed in price and now my local is over £13 for a cod and chips!

Captain Cook was one of the most famous and important adventurers the world has known. He was apprenticed in Whitby - it was where he learned the seafaring craft over three years . He discovered Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii among many other exotic locations. He was the first person in the rest of the world to speak to a Maori, the first person to witness aborigines, or the natives of Hawaii. Among umpteen scientific discoveries the purpose of one Pacific voyage was to observe and record the 1769 transit of Venus across the Sun which, when combined with observations from other places, would help to determine the distance of the Earth from the Sun.

I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay (and to Whitby previously (I love Whitby so much)). So many visitors just 'Do London' and think that's everything the UK has to offer. There's so much beauty here and it's so appreciated when tourists stray from the standard 'doing UK' checklist. You mentioned that there isn't a whole lot to do there, and that's absolutely true - Places like Robin Hood's Bay, though obviously geared towards tourists, aim to preserve their beauty rather than overly commercialise it with visitors centres or theme parks... The beauty of the place is enough. Sit down, get some fish and chips, look out to sea, take a deep breath and just... relax. There's no abundance of neon signs vying for your attention - It is what it is. Enjoy x
BTW, Have you visited Scotland and Wales yet?

Not sure if someone has commented already. The little beach you saw in Whitby was Tate Hill Beach. This is the same beach that Dracula came to shore on in the book 🧛‍♂️ I live in Whitby and probably like anyone in any town/city we just take it all for granted. So it's always refreshing to see it through the eyes of a visitor.

The best place to be for fossils in half a mile down the cost towards Robin Hood’s bay. Their is a Bay that you can only access via a caravan park. It’s a bit tricky with just a narrow path down to the bay. But guaranteed fossils.

You could visit Castle Howard if you are still in Yorkshire, Haworth, where the Bronte sisters lived, have a ride on the N Yorkshire steam railway.

Staithes is also a beautiful village a nit further up from Whitby. Also, Daniel Day Lewis filmed scenes for his last film - Phantom Thread - in the Victoria Hotel in Robin Hood's Bay.

Where you stayed in Robin Hood's Bay, we were there a few weeks back. Facing your accommodation, we stayed in a house just a couple yards over to the right, on the top of the cliff. Absolutely beautiful views! Also, badgers wandering around in the garden at dusk. Lovely area ❤❤

Robin Hoods Bay is lovely. If you come to Blighty again try Staithes, just up from Whitby, that's an old smugglers fishing village too. Ships would wreck on the rocks and the residents would rush out to loot them, building underground tunnels beneath their houses to hide it from the law. And should you go more southernly then the Isle of Wight is a must. Look up Steephill Cove in Ventnor, it's delightful! And an honourable mention to the Cotswolds. You won't get more chocolate box pretty than Bourton On The Water, or the nearby Slaughters (terrible name, lovely place!). Always good to meet you American folk! ❤

They used to carry the coffins up the 199 steps to be buried in St Mary's Churchyard.
It is really strange to see the lace of my childhood be seen through a new set of eyes. Bay Town (Robin Hoods Bay) was always a favourite and yes I have driven down the hill to the bottom to pick up/deliver stuff to the bottom. This was many years ago and even then out of season.
Glad you enjoy my home area so much!

the benches on 199 steps are where the pall bearers would place the coffins when they needed a breather.

I grew up in North Yorkshire, not far from Whitby, and love the excellent fish & chips especially from the Magpie cafe. I would just like to say OUT LOUD that putting curry sauce on high quality f&c is sacrilege! Salt and vinegar and maybe some mushy peas are all you need.

    • @miaschu8175
      @miaschu8175 Před 21 dnem

I was thinking that about curry sauce vs salt and vinegar. Also, I don't know why they called it Irish curry sauce before - anyone else know?
