Thanks. I've been struggling along with imovie because I can't afford Final Cut Pro. Love your videos - I'm 80 yrs old and still riding advanced trails. This is a great sport that keeps us young and healthy!
That's too cool!
It's awesome to hear! I've just starting mtn biking 2 years ago at 35 and I keep thinking, "Will I age out of black diamond trails as soon after I'm able to do them?" I've lost 20 lbs, I'm back to a normal weight from being just overweight and I feel great! I love watching videos of older people shredding and it gives me hope that I'll be in great shape if I just keep moving.
Thank you for being an inspiration! 🚵♂🚵♂🚵♂
And you too @BKXC
🚵♂🚵♀🚵
You have me beat. I'm a mere 73. At 80, does anyone ever say, "Look at that old guy shred!"
@@michaellinehan2660 Hey Michael, most people are definitely surprised when they find out I'm 80. It's a shame that most 80 year-olds are not fit enough to "shred," but it is the riding that keeps me able to do what I do. As I say in my videos, "you don't stop riding when you get old ... you get old when you stop riding!" Keep riding!
Hey Brian, I've been out of the loop with YT mtb videos for quite some time. Happy you're doing well. Hoochiemama!! -Manny (one of your early subscribers)
Hahaha, thanks for that blast from the past Manny!!
Love to see it Brian. Raise others up. Let’s get more shredders out there uploading awesome content.
For sure! Share and share alike
Best gopro guide i have seen . Thanks 👍
This is some really cool stuff to share. A lot of people would hesitate, so I appreciate your confidence and giving spirit of the video. Freaking awesome!
Information wants to be free!
Thanks for sharing the secret sauce! I learned quite a few tips, and now you have inspired me to get to editing the backlog of fun summer rides I recorded. You're the man!
Nice!! The longer you get away from footage the harder it is to edit!
This guy GoPros 😎
Hahaha indeed!!
Great information Brian. Thank you for being willing to share it. Maybe I’ll see you on the trails.
I hope so!
Loved this! Thanks for sharing Brian!
Hope it helped!
Awesome info! Much appreciate you sharing as I try to grow my channel! Keep the great videos coming!!
Thank you!
Thanks! I just started a MTB channel and this helped so much!
Thank you for sharing your secret recipe and work flow! Very comprehensive!
By the way, spot meter is only when the brackets are in the center.
Interesting!
Hey Brian ! I love those videos when you talk about your camera setup !
Glad to hear it!
You always have great footage. Really appreciate you opening up the hood. Incredibly informative video! 😁👍🙏🤙
Glad you enjoyed it!
outstanding content,thanks !
Thanks for all that great info. I've always admired your videos and great story telling. The Milwaukee Pack out thing is genius! My GoPro Stuff is all over - this bag, that bag - wait where did that little part go? Keep up the great work, know that we all appreciate you!
finally! my questions answered. now, another curiosity, how you edit, export, and upload it. Thx Brian.
Final Cut Pro, no fancy settings!
@bkxc regarding audio and recording wireless with two transmitters, just switch to „stereo“ in the receiver settings and each transmitter records its own track line (stereo) in the GoPro footage.
The stuntman chesty will eliminate all that bounce! No need to run an extra belt to ensure the solid POV. Had mine for years and if you’re using the chest mount it’s by far the best ✌🏻
Yeah, I used the Stuntman quite a bit with the mechanical gimbals! Haven't really given it a second chance.
Thanks for that Brian, good stuff! Hoping to see a bike check/review soon on that Ibis HD6, been thinking about replacing my Ripmo with one!
It's a solid machine!
Sweet! Great work flow🤘🏽
Thanks!
By far, you have the best, of not one the best, mtb POVs in this platform. And, still waiting for the new bike video. 😆
Thanks so much!
Thank you for sharing all of your tips and tricks! I made a few adjustments to my GoPro Hero 10, I can't wait to test it on the trail in different light conditions! Also thanks for your comments on microphones, I initially thought those were a necessity but I like that you don't use it all the time if you don't think it will elevate your content.
Sweet, I hope you get some nicer footage from the tweaks!
Btw, it’s not a secret that the Hero 10 is still better in low light than the Hero 11 & 12.
@@JensEser I did not know that! I haven't played with the 11 or 12 yet but I am riding in heavily forested areas where it just appears darker, so I guess I'll hold on to my 10 for a little longer!
Good details Brian! I am still on the Hero 9 and about due for an upgrade. I also prefer chest mount style, you have made me think about going media mod and adding a mic though. And yes, syncing date a time, what a headache when you forget! You have the best ride footage out there, keep ‘em coming. Do a new bike overview too!
Thanks so much! Glad you got something out of this!
Of all the tools and secret ingredients in the kitchen, the cook remains the critical element. But thanks for sharing, Master Chef! 👍
Thanks so much for that great compliment!!
Aw dude! The tip about the time stamps data seem so simple, but I was wondering why my clips weren’t in order no matter what I did. Thanks for that tip!
So key! Lots of different cameras and time changes and battery lag stuff will throw everything into a mess!
Just picked up a Hero 12, thanks Brian!
Hope it looks good!
Dji Action 4 w/ it's magnetic mount paired with the DJI wireless mic I believe is the ultimate setup
Hey Brian, great videos!
As for low light, change it from auto for your iso min and max to 200 and 800. That may help.
Thank you for making this great video!
Min should be 100... No reason to not... And max at 800 will reduce artefacts, but increase shake due to motion blur - the shutter stays open longer allowing time to blur the frame.
I have struggled with grainy and then blurry footage since getting a H8. Spent a lot of time looking into it! It's very frustrating tbh. Gonna try high bit rate on it next.
@rupedog that's the setting I use when I record my sim rig during the dark when the only light it captures is from the monitor screens. I don't notice any shakiness. Gopro hero 11.
Thanks for the ideas!
I watch these videos early as a Patreon, BUT I just had to drop a public comment here… if there’s anyone we can learn from it’s Brian.
Thank you for giving away your POV setup 🫡 #legend
Thanks so much Jared, I appreciate ya!
Go Pro 12 Rocks, freaking amazing how stable the footage is. And using the settings you're providing here produced some great footage without a lot of edit work. I just added sharpness via an adjustment layer to all the clips and yikes the video looks stunning for sure. Thanks, this is Steve over in Bishop, Ca. Ride On!
Fantastic!!
been waiting for you to do one of these again. thanks for helpin a fella out lol 👍🤙🤘✊
Nice, hope you enjoyed it!
Quick capture isn't always recording, its quite the opposite. It powers the camera on and off when you start/stop record, save a step. I use it instead of voice activation, that is always listening and using battery.
Yup! I totally mixed up those
First thing I notice : beautiful Ibis Orange HD6 !!!
It's a REALY BEAUTY!
Great!
Hahha, the snibbaling/sniffing!
I can relate, drives me crazy 😂
Hahahah, it's endless!
Love your videos! I'm going to stick with my GoPro 11 for now... but I just ordered the max lens for the 11 and the Lavalier mic and wind thing. Your advice is costing me though 😂😂. Love your channel!
Yeah, it's worth trying!
Really informative and awesome video! My question is, how much of the incredible footage you get is postproduction edits versus stabilization in gopro settings/equipment **edit** or just good riding technique? I feel like I have the settings right, but my raw unedited footage still comes out fairly shaky.
I don't do any post production stabilization. I do a little "anti fish eye" but that's about it! Sometimes I have to bump up the exposure. Make sure your GoPro isn't bouncing around a ton!
I sometimes watch your videos on a 100" projector screen. Can confirm the quality is legit!
That's fantastic!!
I use the GoPro rubber camera guard /sleeve to both protect the camera and to muffle wind noise well without effecting the wanted audio.
Nice, I didn't know they made a rubber version!
I am glad to hear you have all these problems too lol! I thought it was just me! I have the same Rode lav+ media mod and the sniffling has always killed me so I let the snot run down, but it's kinda nasty especially when you're riding with/around others. So I have recently started recording with a wind slayer on the gopro, it sounds good and I kinda like the little wind effect, and of the sniffles are faint. Also you should try a stuntman chest mount, waaaaaaaaay better at holding the camera in place.
Haha, gotta plug my nose with some toilet paper! I'll have to give the Stuntman another try.
Dude I had that exact same belt in middle school too. Hooray 80s kids
Good stuff. I’ll definitely be geeking out on my footage. I have a GoPro 11 so I think it’s pretty close. I heard that the max pro lens was not necessary because it was already there? but I’ll revisit that. The belt thing is a good idea. But I grew out of my 28 inch 8th grade belts years ago.😉
Hahaha, the belts just keep getting smaller as we get older!
Great Info, thanks for sharing! Yes, the sniffles and squeaky noises are annoying! Do you leave the camera rolling most of the time then edit through the footage or do you stop and start at certain times?
I stop and start a lot of the time. But if it's going downhill no need to stop and start!
Awesome video, thank you! What kind of read speeds do you get from those micro SD cards when offloading?
Not super fast but not terrible
I also use the Røde Lav! Have you had any issues with them breaking? I've gone through at least 3 of them in the last 2 years already. But they are kind of the cheapest and best lav for the price so I keep buying them.
Oh wow! That’s very interesting, I have not had any break yet, but I pretty much ONLY ride in the dry. I’m sure you’ve got a lot more miles in the wet than me, I bet that’s the difference.
SANA ALL😮
Thank you for the great tips!
My tip is to use a battery bank instead of buying a bunch of GoPro batteries. The GoPro can charge off the battery bank (while recording) giving you all day battery life. I use a GoPro Hero 8 with an Anker 10,000 mah battery bank. You will need to replace the stock battery door with a USB passthrough door. If you wear a pack, you can stash the battery bank in there and run the cable to the GoPro. You can then change Auto turn off to never. This setup has worked great for me and its great piece of mind not having to worry about the battery dying while in the middle of a run.
I do the same - can record a TB at a time….
If you have the media mount you don’t need a door - just plugin the pack (BTW I use right-angle usb cables…. Keeps it all tucked in nice.
Glad you enjoyed the tips! I only wear a hip pack now and I'm not a fan of having a cable running to the bag. Also, going from having to change batteries every 30 minutes to changing every 90 minutes makes things incredibly easy.
We have to thank Rhode Island in the 50 State Shred that its weather finally broke his mech gimbal. I love more the videos with the new gopros
Hahaha!
Linus desk pad!
If you want to improve your setting a LOT, get a Stuntman chest mount. The Chesty V2 is too flimsy.
Awesome information. Hopefully everyone appreciates the years of pain and suffering to come up with all this advice and information.
Hahah exactly!
Have you messed around with the GoPro Labs stuff? I just started to try to get better night time performance and its really awesome but does add some complication to my workflow and easy to forget what settings I have on for night vs day.
Yeah, there are some good little tweaks you can do!
Hi Brain, thx for the video! Do you have over heating issues or freezing issues with the GoPro? If so, have you found solutions?
The only recurring problem I've had was with the audio. The first time I used the Hero10 I think it had immediate problems, but then never again. Maybe it was something with the battery or SD card. No overheating or freezing that I know of.
Nice video! I have a question: why not use an external battery brick? Some are quite slim and won't add much bulk.
Also, it's worth noting that if you don't push your video at a high bit rate with 4k 60Hz, especially for smaller channels, the encoders used may not be as efficient as those used by larger channels. I conducted some tests, and the only way I found to prevent 1080p from looking like 320p was to upload a 100GB 4k file. After it encodes for 1080p, the quality is significantly better.
Man, that explains a lot. I've uploaded several 1080p videos that were under a minute and they always look terrible! C
The external battery might cause more problems than solve. They are slim, but I need some kind of cable to run it into a pocket or something. Then it's bouncing around in my pocket. I don't ride with a backpack anymore. A normal USB cable is VERY weak when it comes to normal wear and tear. Then I'd need a 90 elbow thing to make sure it's not jutting out. I don't mind switching batteries!
@@bkxc I guess it comes down to comfort level. I mounted the battery behind the chest mount as it was the same size, and ran a short cable. Hasn't been much of an issue for me yet. But again, everyone has a system they are comfortable with.
Last time I considered POV was in 2017 when I made the mistake of getting a Session instead of a real GoPro. I was also discouraged by everyone talking about gimbals constantly breaking. I finally settled on helmet mount for the Session, but it still was sub par. Nice to see that the gimbal is no longer a necessity for watchable vids.
Most definitely! Much better video straight from a GoPro now
Nice. I think you're the first I've watched that went into this much detail about the gear set up. The downward angle view you have is a great detail that some miss. Cant tell yo how many video's ive watched where dirt or a drop of water or mud gets on the lens and smears the vid and the rider has no idea so were watching minutes of blurry video. Lol
Haha yep, the mud drops are the WORST!
Good video and tips. I own all go pros but not the 12 yet. And other cameras dale to mirror less. Did you mention software you use to edit. People ask me all the time what I use.
Final Cut Pro! The editing software is always the least important thing, I forgot all about it.
@@bkxc oh nice.
Hi there, have you tried flipping the mounting clip so that it clips in from up to down with the Gopro still upside down . This should centre the Gopro in the middle of the chesty making for less shaking as the Gopro is higher up making for less leverage. This method I found also helps to make more space to move around on the bike.
Interesting! I have not tried that
This works set up works great!
I think this is how it should be done, no belt necessary.
Thank you for this BTS! I had started looking into gimble mounts cause I swore you (still) used one, lol. I've always held your videos as the standard for what I wanted to achieve when I first started my channel, so I thoroughly enjoyed this :)
You keep mentioning the software stabilizer. Do you use something like Warp Stabilizer in editing, or were you referring to the in-camera stabilization?
Nice! Glad it helped. Just the GoPro hypersmooth (or whatever it's called) is the only stabilization I use.
@@bkxc sweet! much less extra equipment to pack around, lol.
Hi Brian, You mentioned that you think the best placement for a go pro is below the chin on a full face helmet. While watching mtb videos, I don't like that placement. When that person moves their head around, well, it can make me a little dizzy. I think where you have it placed is PERFECT!!!
Nice! Glad you like my placement!
Have you considered the insta360 x3/x4 at all? the reframed 360 video seems to make a really cool effect that simulates a bit more speed and steepness into the video that a single-lens cam can't capture. Still relatively new tech so I don't expect many people to switch right away. It just seems nice to be able to reframe your shot in post, which also helps with the software stabilization
Doesn't seem to have the resolution I need YET!
quick capture on the Hero 12 is pretty worth it. it turns on much faster than my previous Hero 8 and if you're recording intermittently it'll help you save battery for sure.
Man, I know, I'm just too superstitious!!
@@bkxc look at me telling you... you're the successful youtuber! 🤣 keep up the good work!
@@bkxcquick capture, at least on my H8, doesn't mean the camera is on in background ... In fact it's fully powered off until u start it, & again off when u stop it. But the single short press of the shutter button both first powers on and then starts recording. Another press stops recording & then powers off fully. So it just allows one quick press to control both the power on/off & record start/stop in one.
So assuming the function is unchanged on H12, not need to worry... It is absolutely NOT powered on besides when u start it.
Quick Capture just means you can turn the camera on and start recording by pressing on button. Super good info though otherwise. Thx
Yes! I got it confused with Hindsight!
Brian..... did you give uo on the RODE stuff ??? also..... how does the max2.0 work differently than the original max lens on the HERO 11 /10/ 9 ?
Yeah, the Max Lens 2.0 only works with the Hero12 at the moment and allows for 4k shooting instead of 2.7k.
@@bkxc the 2.7 wasn’t terrible. But i do like the 4k on the bigscreen tv!!
Do you use the QR codes for settings? I have used in Labs since Hero 10, its great.
Yeah, I like the idea of laminating a little card and doing the settings that way! But I still have to check audio levels manually so it's not much of a time saver.
As someone who primarily watches YT on my big screen, I have been pretty annoyed by the lower quality videos I'm seeing from many folks lately. Shakey and muddy to the point I question how many of them can possibly be 4k as stats show.
That said, definitely greatly appreciate the attention to detail you put into your videos as they always look great and enjoyable to watch on my TV.
I also watch using my surround sound system and appreciate that your videos don't have the annoying super low frequency noise going on that usually makes me have to turn my subs off for some other content creators 🤘🤘
That's awesome, I'm glad things all click for a really nice watchable experience!! I LOVE watching videos on my big screen at home on the couch, and it's so easy to tell when the quality sucks, like EVERYTHING THE NFL UPLOADS! 720p garbage.
you got me! I thought you are doing a go pro give away! LOL
Haha!
Good tips! We need a new bike review now…
Maybe its a setting thing for the dark, I've posted a couple videos in the dark from the hero 12 and I think they turned out pretty good. Could use your thoughts anyone please
Maybe I missed it, but what editing software do you use? Thanks
Final Cut Pro!
When are you switching your camera to the DJI Osmo Action 4 or does it have deficiencies in your view ?
Haven't seen much that would sway me away from the GoPro.
Except that GoPro (in my case) failed to record or shuts off randomly. I gave up on it after 2 rides and never bothered after that. This time around I want something reliable that works! From what I understand, GoPro still suffers from reliability issues even in its current 12th incarnation. Sheesh 🙄
Brian I am using DJI Osmo Action 4 and that camera is amazing, finally something that can compete with GoPro. Battery life is much better, low light performance is better, overall stability of the camera is better. We're all accustomed to GoPro, and they're synonymous with action cameras, but believe me, the DJI Osmo Action 4 is a very good camera, and if you have the opportunity, give it a try. The sensor is excellent, and there are no glitches.
I was thinking the same thing. I used to use GoPro until I got pissed enough after doing a cycling video only to have to take the battery out due to freezing issues. DJI = reliable.
I am definitely open to trying it, DJI sent me one before it came out and I was never able to actually get it to activate. Can't use the camera without activating it. Maybe it was because it was an early release or something, but it was a terrible experience right off the bat. Jumping ship to a whole new camera with a whole new set of problems is about my worst nightmare. I'm sticking with the devil I know, for now.
...but I thought Pinkbike told us not to upload our rides unless we're racers?
Hahaha
😊
What editing software do you use?
Final Cut Pro!
It’s not the microphone glitching out, its the media mod. I have the same problem.
Ah! You’re the first I’ve heard with the same problem
I'm not even 2 minutes into this and I have so many questions. What does the lens mod have to do with software based stabilization? Why are you using the GoPro chesty when you could be using the stuntman chastity?
Stuntman is ok, I used it for quite a while. I think I'd still need to use the belt to keep it from flopping. Max Lens Mod helps get better sofware stabilization from the GoPro.
@@bkxc would you say the max lens mod is worth it for the GoPro 11?
what do u do about he batteries? Can u get better then 45 minutes of battery life
GoPro Enduro batteries go for 90+ minutes now!
Anybody know what that weather station on his desk is?
It's from Ambient Weather! Not sure the exact model, but I love the sunset / sunrise and all the different little blips of data it gives you.

Ah, an HD6 I see.
Yup!
I was wondering why my 1080p footage looked so crappy even on CZcams...twas a dark, rainy and foggy day at Northstar.
And youtube compresses the hell out of it. I am convinced they also compress more the fewer followers and views u have.... Popular channels that make yt lots of ad revenue get less compression so better viewing quality, keeping people watching and yt's ad rev up.
Upload the biggest file you can to CZcams!
Not a helmet mount kinda guy? Interesting
why use the word "steal"?
