  • Alison Moyet - Only You (Upstairs At Eric's)
    Looking from the window above
It's like a story of love
    Can you hear me?
    Came back only yesterday
    Moving farther away
    Want you near me
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
    And all I ever knew
    Only you
Sometimes when I think of her name
    When it's only a game
    And I need you
Listen to the words that you say
    It's getting harder to stay
    When I see you
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
    And all I ever knew
    Only you
    (Instrumental)
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
    And all I ever knew
    Only you
This is gonna take a long time
    And I wonder what's mine
    Can't take no more
    Wonder if you'll understand
It's just the touch of your hand
    Behind closed door
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
    And all I ever knew
    Only you

Me!! Funky melody, sung well and can understand her lyrics. That’s a love song don’t complicate it. Loves complicated as it is. Let’s all enjoy the song and then Don’t leave me this way and all jump around!! Love feel good softies but I love a lot disco more more, then to top it off a night at the theatre with a string quartets seeing an orchestra another feeling to experience. Oh well I got addicted to all different music cause the drugs just don’t do what the music can do to the soul. Spread your wings and find something we all enjoy together.

Me. I am in here because I genuinely like this song.
    Alison Moyet.
It softens me. Because I can not even imagine what those lyrics feels like. All I ever knew, only you. What that means. Or feels like.
I don't identify with it, at all, but, that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate the song, and sound composition and just, it's so yearning and unconditional and lovelorn and needing and vulnerable and loving, that it actually softens me.
And I genuinely like that fleeting moment of compassion and sentiment.
That soft feeling is not an "on tap" situation with me.
All cried out, by Alison Moyet is, pretty powerful and personal too.

Looking from a window above, it's like a story of love
    Can you hear me
    Came back only yesterday
    I'm moving further away
    Want you near me
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
    And all I ever knew
    Only you
Sometimes when I think of her name
    When it's only a game
    And I need you
Listen to the words that you say
    It's getting harder to stay
    When I see you
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
    And all I ever knew
    Only you
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
    And all I ever knew
    Only you
This is going to take a long time
    And I wonder what's mine
    Can't take no more
    Wonder if you'll understand
It's just the touch of your hand
    Behind a closed door
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
    And all I ever knew
    Only you

I completely agree. Unfortunately, too often artists like this get pushed aside in favour of people who (the labels believe) are ‘marketable’. Thus we end up getting ‘eye candy’ that may have decent voices, or at least good enough for the producers/sound engineers to work with in the studio. Today, it’s rare to see someone like Adele, who’s voice & lyrics can literally send shivers up & down your spine make it to the top. Too often they take an artist & try to mould then into the next Disney mega star. Their voice along with their ability to express their emotions &/or significant moments in their life through lyrics that resonates with the listener isn’t as important as it once was. It’s as though they have a formula for success & they’re just looking for someone who has the basics to play the role. I’m not sure if you’ve ever heard of Jane Arden, she came out with an amazing album in the early to mid 90. She had an absolutely amazing voice & some haunting (the most appropriate word I think of) lyrics. Unfortunately, because she refused to conform to the label’s idea of what she should look like (thinner), she didn’t get the push other (far less talented, yet more ‘marketable’) artists did. Sorry, I just realized I wrote an essay & went off on a tangent/rant. I guess I could have stopped at “I completely agree”. 🍻 🇨🇦

I was maybe 10 when I heard this in '85. I just think it has so much heart and spirit. There's always constant talk about what it is that makes a hit. It's a mystery as to what the public responds to etc. But this was 1 of them. An example that the best or most loved songs are supposedly the most elaborate, they're not. The simplest and heart felt will be remembered longer.
