      I am in the pre-production phase of a short movie, and I plan on using the dust hits. How many dust hits do you think I should order?

  • @MerchantIvoryfilms
    @MerchantIvoryfilms Před 3 lety +7

    Saving Private Ryan used this effect in some shots were the actors used replicas that fired dust balls that on impact created a large ball of dust. Its a little over the top at times but if you never notice till my comment, then they did their job well. Of course its a mixture of that and pure practical effects of limbs, arms and heads flying off that really drive the bullet effect home along with the final element, sound. In SPR you hear the bullet sound first, and at times a full 1-2 seconds long as the sound is dragged out, then see the bullet impact. Ex: First solder falling when the ramp comes down.

    • @jp-incamera
      @jp-incamera Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, they are indeed quite expensive to buy pre-made because they are individually made by hand and often sold in a minimum quantity. Even the empty plastic .68 shells alone (which are made to shatter easily on impact) can add up in price. If you are lucky enough to live somewhere in the world where a special effects house is near - you should be able to rent a technician/operator to provide all of the gear (and liability insurance) to provide some zirc/dust hits for your film project. Almost always they work out way cheaper than pyrotechnic squibs/hits.

    Like no delay from lighting strike to the thunder clap and no time delay from distant muzzle flashes to the sound, another intentional movie effect mistake, is bullet hits on the ground. Unless the shooter is up high, the bullets hitting the ground should be far behind the target, not around his feet, unless someone is aiming for the targets feet.

    What do the underwater impacts that leave a line of bubbles do in films? someone knows ?

    • @jp-incamera
      @jp-incamera Před 3 lety +1

      In the movie ‘Waterworld’ , they fired BB’s or air rifle pellets into a swimming pool and filmed it underwater using a video camera...then used that element to composite into live action. As seen in many mythbuster type shows, real bullets stop very quickly or deform their trajectory very quickly when shot into water. An object with less velocity and mass such as a BB or small ball bearing would give the effect needed as often depicted in movies (straight lines of penetration into body of water). Maybe a solid rubber paintball round would also work, but I’m betting the smaller sized BB round (6mm) would travel the furthest underwater. Cheers. JP

    I've always been interested in what real bullet hits do. I've always presumed you don't see an aweful lot and real bullets sound like someone chucking gravel about.
    Be great to do an fx bullet hit vid followed by live fire one (probably impossible in this country, over to our American cousins 😆)
    Also whats the saftey element with the paintball rounds, ie if you accidentally hit the actor would they be ok? Or are we talking PJ from Biker Grove? 😵

      JP here! Thanks for the kind words. If those zirc rounds hit an actor/stunt person, it could be a bad day for them if striking a hard area such as uncovered leg/arm/head. Anything fleshy, they’d likely not detonate and just cause bruising and a lot of shouting :) we made sure that our rounds always struck from a safe angle and distance that ‘looked’ close to camera, but in reality was at quite a safe distance. PS - what name would I know you from school? (Glad to see you made it to Lord status!)

    What about body hits?
    ( _Personally, I've never been shot by a paintball...but I understand it is painful and leaves a nasty bruise!_ )
    Are there paintballs for hitting the body and looking like blood spurting?
    Also, what would happen if an actor were to accidentally be hit by one of those _sparky_ hits? Would it actually burn the actor?

      Thanks Mike! You can do the same method with fake blood in the paintballs, but you'd have to be armoured up or padded for it to be safe. The best option for body hits would probably be Squib hits - which we've got something coming up on!!!

      You should NEVER fire these plastic shells at a person regardless of filling. These shells are hard plastic designed to shatter. You can purchase actual red filled paintballs (gelatin shell) but they are hard to come by as its difficult to tell if a player is bleeding while playing paintball if the paint is also red. I can assure you being shot by a paintball does indeed hurt, which is why I play pretty much every other weekend! , but when your playing, the adrenaline masks the pain and your all good. If I were an actor, the lack of adrenaline would sting like a biatch lol.

    You have to have a LICENSE in the UK to buy zirconium powder. In the USA we have been on this other thing called being an adult...

    • @jp-incamera
      @jp-incamera Před 3 lety +2

      Yes, you can buy zirconium powder here in the UK, yet ordering quantities in volume is somewhat controlled and needs proof of safe storage etc from having a suitable licence. For the sake of the video, it was easier to highlight that at least in many parts of the world - obtaining zirconium powder in the correct mesh might be problematic or even prohibited for sale to the general public, and most importantly that the use of said powder within a load of a paintball round then becomes a different story (legally). Buying the pre-made zirc hits are generally controlled at the point of sale or import (as most are made in the US) and/ or require sufficient proof of licence to be purchased both in the UK and US. Yes, in general the UK has some quite strict rules on procurement of pyrotechnic materials, and whilst it would be amazing to live in the land of the free and be able to buy black powder in Walmart whenever you like, on balance the UK has quite a decent way to control such things from easily getting into the wrong hands. Cheers.

    • @ProCat4displaysPlus
      @ProCat4displaysPlus Před 7 měsíci

      @aaronweir816 unfortunately it’s not that simple, just buy a pyro license to acquire and use Zirc Hits in the UK. You will need to become a (pyrotechnics) SFX Technician, by attending the JIGS two day training course by Event Horizon (Precision Energetics) or a two day P2/T2 Pyrotechnics training course. Then you will need appropriate insurance using pyrotechnics for film and tv. Most manufacturers and suppliers of Zirc Hits w/BP or FP burst and Zirconium metal powder with APS -44μm will not ship to a residential address.

    Which "licence" is required to do this? Bectu or ...?

    • @jp-incamera
      @jp-incamera Před 3 lety

      For UK procurement/ use and storage of pyrotechnic materials , a BECTU recognised certification or licence is recommended to be obtained. A quick search online should help dig into the subject, as there is a lot of info out there, including requirements for public liability insurance etc.

  • @Uhfgood
    @Uhfgood Před 3 lety

    This is cool, but I always wondered if you could fake shots in camera that were 100% safe. That is paintballs still can be dangerous, maybe not as real pyrotechnics, but still can put an eye out or whatever. Is there a way to get all those effects in camera, without any chance of damage?

    • @jp-incamera
      @jp-incamera Před 3 lety +2

      Yes - some creative use of split screen would eliminate an actor or stunt person needing to be close, as the shots could be done separately and combined later. It’s worth mentioning that very few things in effects are 100% safe, often the best approach is to minimise the risk and control the outcome as much as possible through design and testing. Although you could see some of the angles we were firing from in our sequence, it was in reality way more off target and at a safer distance than it looked. The power of the camera angle and longer focal length can really make things appear closer than they actually are. Before we shot our little sequence we went through and tested each setup without Pete close by to see where our angle of deflection was as well as where our debris spread would be...from that we calculated how close to safety position Pete and the camera. Paintballs are indeed dangerous, but the risks can be minimised greatly with proper planning, handling and experience. Cheers!

      All over it...whenever Tommy had the gun to film his bits to camera - the c02 was empty by then and purged from the gun. Hopper and chamber checked empty...then handed to Tommy for his bits to camera. The end shot of him firing offscreen was dubbed with sound from previous takes. Trust me, even a nerf gun I’d treat in a similar way before handing over to an actor / presenter etc...knowing that they’d likely be gesticulating when talking and holding anything close to a firearm. Well spotted anyway!...I guess we did our work well if you thought we were being reckless when Tommy was holding the paintball marker and waving it around with his finger on the trigger :) Cheers
