- The Maxim Defense PDX 300bo isn't ready for prime time with its faulty gas system and questionable performance due to barrel length so I built my own PDW.
Parts used in this build:
- Seekins Precision NX15 skeletonized lower with ambidextrous bolt release.
- OSS QD muzzle brake with OSS HX-QD 762 Ti titanium rifle silencer.
- Strike Industries Strike Rail 7" M-lok handguard and SI LINK Curved ForeGrip
- Ballistic Advantage 8.3" .300 Blackout BA Hanson Pistol Length AR 15 Barrel w/ Lo Pro, Performance Series
- Timney Triggers AR-15 Skeletonized Trigger
- Odin Works Upper and extended XMR 2 mag release
- Daniel Defense pistol grip
- Radian safety selector and Radian Raptor charging handle
- Maxim Defense SCW pistol brace
- Eotech EXPS 3-0
- Streamlight TLR8 - Sport
*** I mis-remembered and made a mistake. The barrel used in this build is the Ballistic Advantage 8.3" .300 Blackout Hanson Profile Performance Series Barrel. The overall length when the brace is closed without the OSS silencer is 21.6". Good news is, MORE VELOCITY and thanks to the SCW brace, still a very short package. FULL PARTS LIST IN THE DESCRIPTION!
Hey Maximus if you get the chance could weight the bcg? Would like to know how much it weights. Thank you
Thanks for the post. That’s a awesome built. Can’t wait to see how it shoots.
Great job on this. I love it. Great information on all of it. It puts my 300blk out to shame. Awesome job sir.
Good for you. Love the build. With a little research and know how, I built 3 badass ar pistols. No where near the cost of Maxim pdw and believe me, I didn’t cheap out either.
Thank you! Ya it's pretty nice when you make your own! Thanks for the comment
Amazing content!! You are such a good bad influence lol!!!! Love all the details explained in the video!!!
Beautiful PDW!
Excellent job on the build and on the video. So many builders run through their build and skip half of the parts. Thank you for investing the time to go through it thoroughly for all of our benefits. I did have one question and I apologize if you mentioned it and it just slipped by me. AWhat Folding Adapter did you use. I'm not 100% certain as I don't own one but I believe the OE PDE can be fired when opened....so Id like to be certain that I use the appropriate folder. I really liked the look of "Little Brother" as well. Your builds may very well have some long list cousins if the Snail Mail Wwould hurry up!!! Thanks Again!!
- RONO
Pretty Sweet!!! Congratulations
I’ve found the same thing with my OSS and my 4.75inch 300blk barrel. It’s such a great sound with the OSS. Way quieter than both my obsidians. I’m still waiting on my Rugged Surge to try. It’s 9inch in its full configuration.
I want to see a few of the big gun channels review your build. It looks awesome and I want to build one.
This SCW brace only adds 4.0” to your AR15. At full extension, the Maxim SCW brace reaches 8.8 inches.....I got one in Arid color for my AR47 with Buffer and Spring H2 .....It rocks !
Damn now that's a sick ass AR!!
Just grabbed a DDM4 PDW, but this looks great.
I’m not wild about the color scheme but I love there have that yours is not just all black like everyone else’s gun. I’m going to paint mine also
Good to hear MD gave you the refund. Nice build. I was weary but took the chance on the 7.62x39 PDX and she works great.
Ya the 762x39 doesn't have the gas issue from what I've heard but the ballistics are not poor for self defense. Good range toy though!
Maximus Joseppi
Ballistics between 7.62x39 and 300 Blackout are pretty much identical no matter the barrel length. Only advantage of 300 Black is availability of subsonic ammo. I don’t shoot suppressed.
@@charliestoybox2099 that's not true. 300bo supersonic ammo performs 20-30% better out of short barrels under 10 inches. it uses pistol powders that burn faster. (Even using Maxim defense's own chronograph results).
762x39 out of the PDX is pointy 9mm +p fmj ammo. It's not effective for self defense and will not behave like the caliber is designed to. I would highly discourage anyone from putting it in that role.
I never got to chronograph 300bo out of the 5.5" gun but the bullets designed for 300bo that expand at subsonic and low velocities make it possibly viable with that ammunition. I doubt supersonic ammo would achieve enough velocity to give it rifle ballistics.
That is why in my own build, I opted for a few extra inches of barrel to get full performance out of the 300bo cartridge.
Maximus Joseppi
You should take a look at some of the chrono tests and ballistic gel tests using Hornady Black Out of short barrels.
It’ll surprise you how well it works. As for 300 Blackout subsonic rounds, I’ll stick with 45 acp at the same velocities.
@@charliestoybox2099 I LOVE 45 super, looking forward to the xdm elite series in 45. That will be a huge win for a high cap quality 45 for carry.
Getting one asap. As of now we only have the fnx45 or g21.. I'm not a fan of hammer fired for carry and glocks are horrendous so I'm pretty excited haha.
Appreciate the depth you went into about the brace. Always wondered if the BCG was coated as that’s a big quality of life issue when shooting suppressed.
Do you know if the buffer weights can be changed? Needed to run a heavier buffer to fix some cycling issues I had with my subsonic reloads.
Love Odin works stuff. Used their 02 lite handguard on my build complete with one of their angled fore grips. Pricy, but they looked great.
Yes, they offer heavier buffers. I'm using their lightest one and it works well for my build.
I just built a 6.5" .300 AAC for my girlfriend, checkout barrel nuts & rails from V Seven Weapon Systems if you want to go super light weight. Her barrel nut is titanium (grade 5) and lithium aluminum rail...we're talking a couple ounces. Love the effort & execution!
Hey there, have you ever checked out the auto bolt release from Smith Tactics?? When you slide in a fresh magazine, the second it locks into place, it auto bolt releases. It has worked for me flawlessly without fail for about 2000 plus rounds now. You can forget the bad lever. Try the smith and you’ll never go back! 👍🏼
So on the paint! Krylon! Do you brush it or just spray it from the can!? Do you throw it in an oven? Or whats the dry/curring process!? Thanks in advance love from TX
just finished watching this vid for the 3rd time, nice build. i also checked for your "shooting it" vid but didn't find it. i recently received my PDX (.556) SBR and its nice, but load AF!! (to be expected...) what I'm thinking of doing to quiet it down is taking maxim's 10.3 barrel/rail and adding a can. my question is... do you (or can you only) run sub 300 rounds thru this build? thx!
Curious if your trigger has any movement on safety? I have the exact same lower parts. Timney, Radian, and Seekins lower.
Checked your channel playlist and didn't find a follow-up for this video. Did it function?
Does Maxim Defense sell the bolt/buffer spring assembly as a kit of is it all ala carte from them? This makes the big difference in making things small.
I will be waiting for a review of this build as soon as we get a go ahead to reopen the ranges, personally I have a can and can take advantage of a decent back yard. I am quite curious as to how the gas system works out for you as they have been the main issues in the past with pistol builds.
Stay healthy and safe!
I was able to fire it and it works perfectly.
The brace and BCG and buffer system come as a package. 👍🏻
Thanks for the comment! It's way shorter than a normal brace, by about 4"
I am having issues taking off the buffer tube. Any suggestions? Or can you show a demonstration.
Could you do me a big favor! can you measure the LOP, the line of pull of the PDW brace fully extended. That would be the measure from your trigger to the end of the fully extended PDW brace. Thanks
Wtf are you the ATF
@@ktmredbull100 NO, I was actually just curious to see how long that stock is. Those types of stocks are shorter than your normal stocks and are not as easy to shoot.
I don’t see where you can specific on opticsplanet that it’s 300BLK. Will the 3.3 OZ work ?
Beautiful build. Where does one buy all these parts?
Thanks so much for the info now I’m gonna get that brace.
Did you ever put out a video of you shooting it.
I would like to build one like the on the video but I have never build an AR15. It is hard to build follow the listed parts??
I have change parts to my AR but never build a complete one.
It's pretty easy honestly. Just take it slow, there's lots of videos showing you how if you're unsure about anything
How does it run with the scw brace? Debating the same one for my pdw build?
When you bought your barrel what options did you go with? They have three options to fill in on their website. Thanks for your time.
i didnt have any options when i bought it
What buffer tube and spring did you go with on your stock
What's the difference between the Maxim Defense PDW brace and SB PDW Brace ?
Sorry I forgot about you doing this build after your Maxim messed up. You may have covered it but is the carrier standard are is it cut down to work with the little Maxim Brace?
Ok I see! The bolt is shorter👍🇺🇸
Awesome build, what size buffer are you using, how did you get it to cycle with subsonic ammo without a can
just a standard buffer that came with the stock and I didn't have to do anything to it. just ran perfectly after assembly. ballistic advantage makes good barrels.
Nice piece. I went with an LWRC true ambi lower instead
sig wouldnt fix it so i sold it. made 1400 bucks on that piece of shit though so win
do you think this grip will be too large for Honey Badger? looks like same barrel length you have here
Holy shit. I am so fucking glad I ended up buying the Q Honey Badger SBR instead of the Maxim PDX. Even though the badger is more expensive and better in every way, AT LEAST IT FUCKING WORKS RIGHT LOLOL
NICE!!!
Which weight buffer did you use with the SCW brace? I've read that using a lightweight bolt/buffer can cause really harsh cycling on the internals.
It doesn't use a standard buffer. I used the one it comes with. They have heavier ones but it's not necessary for my build, runs perfectly with soft recoil.
Maximus Joseppi yeah I saw it wasn’t standard buffer in the video. On their site their is no selection. You have to choose H1, H2, H3, etc. when ordering. Was thinking about getting an adjustable gas block, but I’ve not messed with them in the past. Went on the Maxim site and was surprised to see they’ve changed from not suppressing 5.56 to not suppressing their builds period. Looks like you made the best decision with your build. Looks really nice by the way.
@@hba8103 ohh I didn't order it from them, I got it off optics planet for a bit cheaper so it just came with a default buffer. It's their lightest one.
Ya, their gas system is trash, that's why they don't want you putting silencers on them, screw that haha.
Thank you! It's my go to now, fun gun
Questions… I have a 6” 300 BO barrel with the same buffer setup I have not shot it yet. Any ideas if it starts giving me problems? Should I setup for supers then add a can like you have? I need it very quiet for coyotes pigs and Big cats. It’s an adjustable gas block. Eventually I want to get that can setup.
6" is very short.. most guns with a barrel that short have random issues. you should be able to set up your gun to run ok with your adjustable gas block though.
@@maximusjoseppi5904 I might need to do an 8 or 9 inch. This for what it is runs good on supers. Subs probably will cause problems without adjustments. 7.5, 8, or 9 inch better for subs and weight to stick out a window. We only get seconds if we see the varmints in the truck.
@@maximusjoseppi5904 I shot it and it’s not had a lot of rounds through it yet. Believe it or not the thing runs ok so far. Yours is actually extremely nice though. 😂 I may need to just make another.
I'm a newbie but this looks awesome. So, it looks like the total build cost would be around $3,500.00...? I'm wondering if I should try and build an identical gun instead of getting a complete, factory gun. If you had a step-by-step course somewhere, on how to build this thing, I would pay for it.
Question on the barrel length. Do you know if they measured the overall length to get 8.3" or is that measurement from the bolt face?
I'm curious as your barrel sticks out about an inch past your rail
So I did image analysis based on the size of the flash hider. The rail is definitely 7". I checked with the barrel manufacturer. They claim to measure the barrel length from the bolt face. They can't be right. An 8.3" barrel, measured from the bolt face would put the crown at roughly 7.8" and the start of the threads around 7.17". That would have been nearly perfect alignment with the edge of the rail. Your barrel sticks out at least another .75" before you get to the threads. I'm wondering how that barrel would look with the Gridlock 8.5" rail.
The reset on the trigger looked a little sucky too be honest. I prefer the flat trigger. Helps facilitate a direct back trigger pull. And I prefer geissle triggers.. absolutely amazing. I got the 3 stage.. can’t say anything else but amazing
What was total for entire build.
Any reason you went with a maximum defense over a Honey Badger or Sugar Weasel?
Because the sugar weasel is just an over priced AR pistol and the honey badger's brace is extremely fragile and flimsy. The takedown is also a nightmare cause it uses a smaller spring as well.
This Maxim defense brace achieves the same thing with a significantly more rugged and secure brace system that's much easier to service, utilizes a standard AR lower, and the brace itself offers a decent cheek weld.
I got a refund on the PDX and only have this custom build I made now which I'm very happy with.
What bolt / pin did you use
What did you do to prep the parts for paint? Loving that build!
Not much! You can wipe them down with a rag or give them a quick spray of brake free clean to get any oils and debris off but that's about it.
I tape off any internal openings as well.
Chlorine free brake cleaner is what I’ve always used. Works like a charm.
I want a shorter buffer tube for mine to it will collapse further
How much cost to buy all parts for it (without Eotech EXPS)? Can U custom build it if someone will order it from U?
It was about 1500ish without the optic, light, or silencer. I'm not an FFL so I wouldn't know how that works, sorry buddy!
Build your own man. My 11 year old has built one with only a little help.
Did you shave your DD grip? Did you paint it?shat paint did you use? Thanks your pistol looks sick 🔥 🔥🔥
I painted everything except the stock, optic, foregrip, and light.
It's all just krylon stuff, thank you very much!
Maximus Joseppi awesome
Excellent video. Too bad you were not able to put the gun through its paces. You did a great job explaining the Maxim system. I'm curious why you didn't think that this may have been part of the reason why your Maxim didn't work. With that said, in Maxims defense I have seen a plethora of video's on 300 blackout rifles and pistols that have had problems like yours. Larry Vickers did a great video on comparing ruski 7.62 with 300 black out and 5.56. Both the ruski and 300 black out rounds have serious ballistic degradation at past just 100 yards where in my Maxim in 5.56 I had moa at 200 yards and Maxim confirms this. Maxim built there guns for U.S. Spec-ops and built them in 2 calibers ruski 7.62 and 5.56. The ruski cal was done because many operators would be in environments where only ruski ammo was available. Remember. The key paradigm was to make a rifle caliber pdw small enough to fit in a small backpack. Mine fits in a Condor 20" day pack. Now I have to address your brake versus the Maxim Hate brake. The Hate break is one of the great features of the Maxim. It really works. The serious pistol blast is redirected away from the shooter and recoil is less than on my Knights Sr-15 rifle! In 5.56/223 my Maxim has been flawless. I really feel that 300 black out is going to end up like the 40 cal. A great idea but bad results. I would probably guess without suppression your gun is going to have a nasty blast you'll feel as well as nearby shooters. With suppression that will mitigate but I hope it doesn't create function problems. Good luck. Post a vid. of you running it through its paces and again I hope all ends up with you having a great shooter!
Maxim went to short. 7" is way better performance and much easier to tune. I have fantastic results with my 7.5" chambered in 7.62x39.
I actually mis-remembered! this is the ballistic advantage 8.3" barrel! i need to make a notation haha... i build a lot of guns, got confused. even more FPS! the gun sits at an overall length of 21.6" though, very small.
@@maximusjoseppi5904 Yeah that little brace really helps shrink it down👍🇺🇸
@@UncleDanBand64 I was able to shoot it yesterday and it works great and locks back with all the subsonic ammo I tested.
The new Hornady 190gr expanding subs and the atomic 260gr expanding subs and some cheap minute man munitions 200gr.
Which is cool cause those 260s didn't work in my other build but worked good with this recoil system and they're gnarly 👍🏻
@@maximusjoseppi5904 Fantastic sir! Thanks for the update👍🇺🇸
@@maximusjoseppi5904 Sweet Build! What buffer & spring option did you get with the brace? H3, other? Thanks!

Because the recoil system has nothing to do with the gas system in any way. They had a defective gas system on the 300 and forgot to put the sealing nut on my gun. I got it refunded.
The hate break is simply a back pressure device to try to get the gun reliable, it's nothing special. I've heard the PDX works in those other calibers but the ballistics are useless so it's just a range toy.
This rifle works awesome, I was able to try it. It works with and without a silencer with subsonic and supersonic ammo.
Thanks for the comment
@@maximusjoseppi5904 Great news to hear your build is doing well. I picked 5.56/233 because of how flat it shoots and I use Federal 48 grain ballistic tips, that out of a 16" barrel are screaming at 3200 fps Even out of the 5" inch barrel the rounds were accurate and that ballistic tip is like a mini hand grenade! Sadly federal doesnt make the American eagle version anymore but do make a much more expensive Nosler ballistic tip. I was fortunate to stash a 1000 rounds of the less expensive American Eagle. Some day I'll get a chrono to get ballistics. In the mean time I'll be waiting to see your video on your build with you running it through it's paces!
That is sick. The box should have been wrapped in American flag paper!
What MD SCW buffer spring did you use? H1, H2, H3, or STD 3.3oz?
They only have one spring and their system comes with their proprietary BCG/buffer system and I used whatever it came with.
@@backinthelabdetroit no. it comes with the standard buffer and if you have a problem, you can purchase a different weight. theres no choosing when you purchase it unless you talk to them haha.
@@backinthelabdetroit I don't need to, I already bought mine 🤣
If they added buffer options to their site, cool, but it's cheaper if you buy it from other places which just come with the standard buffer.
It's also a waste because there's no way you can know which buffer you need before you use the system, there's zero correlation between this and the original buffer used.
What did you wrap your silencer in?
HAD suppressor cover. (Heat abatement device)
Honestly if you get a nice cerakote on the whole thing it'd be nasty.
Thanks, maybe someday I'll send it out! Thanks for the comment
For someone new to weapons.....what do you credit the most for your ability to shoot subs/super...both suppressed and unsuppressed? I saw your later video updating us and being able to shoot all types washout issues....far outperforming complete builds from industry leading companies.
just properly designed components for the caliber. theres lots of "industry leading companies" that make dumb products and smaller companies that make great ones. theres lots of complete builds that operate properly as well. its when companies put form over function that they end up with crappy products. sig sauer does this a lot.
@@maximusjoseppi5904 you said you were able to shoot subs and supers suppressed and unsuppressed before you had the buffer system? I’m trying to figure out if the success of cycling is to the barrel length and design or the buffer system. I want to take a blueprint of your components but I don’t know if it would work with a foldable stock or the 6” version of the barrel. I’m unsure if it’s these particular factors that have to remain the same in order to work. Such as the 8.3” Hansen and the buffer system. Any deviation from this could cost cycling issues?
What gas block did you use ? Adjustable ?
No, the barrel comes with one. Just a standard low profile
Ooooook. I'm taking most of these components for my build. Can't steal that color though. I just wouldn't feel right copying that Star Wars Bounty Hunter color scheme.
Not fair! Little brother too. Wtf!
Haha thanks for the comment!
Fucken Sick
I wonder if that problem is consistent in the pdx through different calibers. I’m about to pick up one in 556. Hard to tell seems like not many people own one.
No, the 300bo PDX is the only one that has the unique gas system that had problems.
Most people don't buy the gun in 556 or 762x39 cause it's ineffective in those calibers. It's an expensive range toy.. the barrel just isn't long enough.
That's why I made this one with the longer barrel.
Mine won’t be a range gun. None of my guns are. But I own an ar in just about every barrel length and configuration and I need something tiny to stick in a bag occasionally. I thought of a sig mcx or a b&t apc9, but I have tons of ar mags, parts, and 556 Ammo, and I don’t feel like diverging into a new platform.... long story short here I am
@@dw7284 you do not want to defend yourself with a 5.5" barreled 556 or 762x39. It's completely ineffective for stopping a person.
You end up with 22lr and 9mm fmj. They will not have rifle ballistics and will not perform the way the rounds were designed to.
You are better off actually using 9mm that's designed to perform at those speeds or you need to increase the barrel length 👍🏻
Maximus Joseppi you’re going get around 400 ft/lbs or more depending on the load you choose out of a 5.5 inch 556. Not rifle ballistics but average pcc or pistol ballistics. Lol not 22lr ballistics, where did you get that from?
Maximus Joseppi also 300 bo(762x35) you are hardly going to get superior ballistics over a 762x39 in that barrel length
Love it all minus the handgun light 😑
It’s both cool and ugly at the same time. I dig it
Did you shot it yet, if so how was it
I have not, the virus has closed all the ranges around me. Soon hopefully

Maxim defense costumer service sucks. I ordered my pdx 3weeks ago, still “processing” tried calling them and email still no reply. Im moving to a different city wanted to change the ffl address.
Are you the dad from Modern Family? You sound exactly like him. It was hard not to laugh even though you weren't trying to be funny. Sick pistol. I wish you would had given it a little more life by allowing the hardware to be black, instead of all white, but that's my preference. Nice video.
Special Ops Tactical has shorter 300 blackout barrels, 5.9" and a 6.75"
that trigger might be a 3lb, i cant find 3.5lb
Stike industries hand stop is backwards. The textured area on the outside of the larger end is so you can hook your support hand index finger on it. Fyi
It's not backwards, that's it's normal orientation👍🏻
