  • Fear not the Tormach! I am amazed at how easy this CNC Mill is to run. We got the facing and boring done on our bow rollers and chain stoppers with no CAD, and no CAM. Too many times we think something will be difficult when we would be better served to think it will be easy.

Excellent work Doug. I like the DIY casting you've done. Its so hot down there, you just leave your metal out in the sun and presto, a casting.

    Two things:
    1) Cold rolled sheet goods are amazing on the plasma table. nearly no dross, can run faster. Hard to get in over 14ga thickness though.
    2) @14:53, you need an impact wrench. I use the DeWalt DCF883 which is 3/8" but the DCF880 is 1/2". Those are the smaller of the three sizes they over so I don't blow threads out. I also have the big 1/2 DCF889, which will break just about any bolt under 3/4" if you let it. All 20v, no complaints from me on reliability, they're just like the impact drivers.

you really should add some "triangle" reinforcements to the chain stop. I can see that weld getting snapped.

    • @SVSeeker
      @SVSeeker  Před 7 lety +1

Hardly. There is 5 times the amount of steel in that stop than is in the cross-section of the chain. But it's always safe to safe "you should build it stronger" :)

If you are trying to find when a rotating, cutting tool hits the work face, put a bit of chalk, or engineers marking blue on the face. Because of the change in contrast as the bit hits the chalk or blue you can easily see when the contact is made.

You may notice that sometimes cold rolled can move. For example if you turn the OD of a piece to exactly what you want then drill a hole in it the OD may change slightly.

If you're going to have many more big holes to do, like that bow-roller, look into getting a BORING HEAD. If you can get a good price, it's a faster and more precise way to make a nice round hole; may be the right thing if you have something fussier to do than the rollers.
Have a quick gander at a video of one doing its thing and see what you think. You can never have too many tools!

I would look into servers with redundant components (power sypplies, etc.) at the very least instead of any PC. SSDs instead of spinning hard disks would be less prone to failure. And/or setting them up in a small RAID.

Save your files for the parts on the Tormach mill to a pair of external drives at all times. That way you will not loose data if the machine crashes.

WHAT DID U MAKE TODAY? :: It is a GREAT addition to the social aspect of the SV_Seeker project. Just the images are interesting, inspiring and hopeful. Just the slideshow of pictures make the world a better place. . . . . . . . But =>> Maybe =>>> someone somewhere has the vision and energy to pour on top a simple great thing and raise it up to a more complicated FANTASTIC thing . . . .=> A way to allow connections with the projects behind the images between makers that would be interested in sharing and watchers that want to connect. . . . . ? ( No job is to hard for the person that doesn't' have to do it : )

the problem with the pc is the ram, sometimes the ram slots make a problem even with a slight entrance 1/100th of an inch. he should have tried plugging the VGA or the HDMI port in to an external screen to see if its a graphics card problem. Some manufacturers still use the old heat problematic AMD graphics card.

if you do a lot of toolchanges on the tormac it might be nice to have a small airwrench system to use on the drawbar
theres actally a setup that mounts a butterfly airtool permanently on top of the mill that you can push down ontoo the nut and push to the side to loosen or fasten
    czcams.com/video/4oL-XcKPiKg/video.html
nice thing about it that you can regulate the airpressure to prevent overtightning the drawbar
think the diesel in the keels whont do a lot of good with water as diesel oil floats on top of water unless the oily stuff realy sticks to the steel , maibe you need to put in some rust inhibitor / stuff that changes rust intoo a black sheen

With a Tormach CNC Mill sitting there? Yes. A) Pain in the ass to mount a 50 pound part on it's side so that it can spin. B) No DRO. C) No CNC I love that lathe but that CNC Mill is 10 times easier, which means better accuracy and speed for a novice like me.
