My dad was in love with moulding. He made his own trim and triples and all
Plinth blocks are great but sometimes too much is too much. That moulding looks awesome without the blocks! Awesome job you have done so far!
You have learned your craft well!
I have been a finish carpenter since 1984.
I like your attention to detail and willingness to learn.👍👍
I like how the molding looks that goes straight to the floor… but the blocks looks good too
the blocks don't look good
I'm hucked on this siries. You are making it real. And is your house. Wich makes it special to show. This the pride and joy of home ownership. Is coming out beautiful. Thank you for letting us in your house.
Love that your family is getting into your videos more on your home projects! The wife, the energy suckers and Chief!
I've replaced my door casings upstairs so far, used WindsorOne craftsman style and they are super nice. Pretty expensive, but worth it for me. It's painful when my kids bash into them or draw on them, but they beat the crap out of MDF and the warped boards from the big box stores with their trash primer. I've picked up a ton of tips from this channel. Excellent work.
I can't imagine you sleeping soundly knowing you really need plinth blocks for the garage door! ;-) Great video showing the thought process in moulding.
Thank you, Richard! I am in the midst of designing a custom plinth block to work with a custom casing I designed for a 100 year old historic home remodel. I followed your approach and the result was great.
For primer, you should try the Bin or the Kilz original oil based rattle cans. I prefer those when priming wood. They sand since too!
It’s looking great. Your so talented and your wife is so patient.
Richard, I know through YT that you are friends with Matt Jackson from Next Level Carpentry....I'm beginning you to either ask him to make you some push handles for your table saw or make some using his design. His designs make the perfect push sticks. I'm begging you.
Always learning something new on your channel. I always see the casing touching the floor in my area. Rarely do I see anything different, but when you showed the difference in appearance it really made, that just changed everything for me.
Glad I’m not the only one that has this hard of a time with the ol’ lady, it’s like sometimes she knows what I’m talking about, other tines I just shake my head. Good to have a woman that appreciates some carpentry though
I agree with your wife, no blocks looks better.
Very cool. Nice to see the process of coming up with the design and dimensions for the plint block. The trim looks much better with the plint block "foundation" as opposed to dead-ending into the floor.
BIN in a can is an amazing primer. Sands to powder in 15-30 depending on your climate.
If CZcams has taught me anything it’s that you can use bondo on your garage trim to create a plinth block 😂 Love the work! Excited to see the house coming together! I’m just your average diyer on his 3rd house renovation and although I’m no master carpenter I learn so much from you. Thank you for sharing your work with us!
What kinda bondo?
I really like your plinth blocks and I am thinking it might be nice to ease the edges on the two sides with a very minimal round over, say 1/8" that would go well with your casing. Great work as always!!
keep it it up, i like these episodes where you talk through molding ideas and such, this channel has come a long way
I understand the blocks but with moulding that thick it seems fine going all the way to the floor. The base moulding would still fit fine
“What color would you like for the laundry room?”
“Yes.”
My wife and I have no kids, but as soon as we buy a house, we're getting a trampoline. They're so much fun AND great exercise -- sure beats going for a run!
I used Rustoleum for all the trim in my heavily-trimmed bathroom and am extremely pleased with how smooth, durable and shiny it turned out. I thought it was for metal but it's great for wood or wood products too.
I’m wanting to see what you’re calling a “heavily trimmed” bathroom. Especially with using Rustoleum
Rustoleum makes a lot of products. Richard is using their "2X" line, which is designed for wood and plastic ( as well as metal).
@@terencemerritt I installed wide, ornate trim @ octagonal window, dart and egg trim at vertical and horizontal edges of decorative wainscotting on 2 walls behind the W.C., Reeding trim @ door, tub-drain area access and small window, cavetto @ all wall-corners, chair-rail trim used as Crown, Casing used as Base-board, more egg and dart @ the 4' marble shelf above the Lav, and finally 8 different types of trim, etc. used in the built-in floor-to-ceiling cabinet with some open shelves and deep storage behind doors. Some of the trim was finger-joint, some was foam-backed plastic, some was molded sawdust (I don't know what it's called), some of the ornate egg and dart was clay over wood and some was pvc. The Rustoleum performed perfectly on all surfaces. I also used decorative tile trim around the Travertine tub-splash. It sounds overdone but it's actually minimal visually.
Brent is definitely a good source of information. Looks fantastic, your installation. 👌🙏
I really like the idea of using a wainscoting cap for the door case moldings. I’m in the process of renovating my family room and may use that idea for my doors and windows.
Nice to see some love for Scuff-X. Been using that on cabinets and trim for a couple of years now. The semigloss feels so good and isn’t too glossy.
You should get a good mechanical pencil. I use the Pentel graph gear 1000. Made of metal and feels good in your hand. It's available in .5 .7 and .9 mm. No sharpening needed. Truly a night and day difference
You do have that special talent for what you do.
6:58 What kind of mad man puts the washer on the right!!! Washer Left, Dryer Right! haha
You looked like a GIANT in the video when deciding the plinth block height.
Freakin love this guy. Seriously. We are very similar in work detail but mine is HVAC.
We do not know what we do. But it falls into place in are imagination thoughts. Like in a dream but as we are awake. Yes I know this construction thoughts. Great job
my brother watches this channel and suggested I submit my question. Q: Suggestion on what to fill fine nail gun holes on white semi-gloss painted wood window frames.. thanks for your suggestions.
I love the custom plinth blocks!
I learned glazing restoring a 100+ year old set of doors to my library. A lot of starting over to get it right!
Hi Richard.
I get the plynth block design. Looks great.
But the square corner leaves me wondering why you haven't passed a router over it to mimic the radius of the door trim?
Great workmanship as always. Not sure I would use single glazing on my windows. Kinda a step backwards in efficiency.
Balance out your "Hull" with some "Risinger"...
I need some trim my self, Eddie Murphy joke. That involves wood also
Glad your doing plinth blocks and they look great. I would to see you apply the base trim about 1" lower then the plinth though - around 5-3/4" instead of flushing out with the top of the plinth. Great job on the casing profile.
That’s the craftsmanship coming through, see what you don’t like and then make what you do well done Richard.👍👍
A very knowlegeable paint salesman told me to grasp the rattle can by the top and swing it in a circle so the ball rolls around the groove in the bottom for better mixing.
Golden Retrievers always look happy.
Zinzer BIN Primer is the only thing you should ever prime wood with.
At least with a rattle can.
That’s the same trim in my house, I did mine 20+ years ago. My door trim is 4-5/8 wide with 7” base . Speaking of the trim in the wash room.
Bro I’m hitting up that podcast get that plug!!! Motivating channel keep up the good work
I’m jealous, I wish my area had Windsor one available
Could you do a video of how to trim a drywalled alcove? 😩🙏🙏 I have this small arched alcove that the builders just dry walled and put a small piece of trim at the bottom and I want to make it look … better. Thanks! Love your work 🔥✨
I like the plinth blocks. I’m my opinion I’m curious how it would look if the outside corners were rounded instead of square and sharp. To me it would match more with the rounded details of your casing. Maybe there’s a reason. You left them square.
The value you are adding to your home is totally ridiculous. I can’t wait to see the end result. There is no telling what it’ll be worth when you’re done. I’m
going to get the Festool Domino so I can build my own doors to replace the cheap “Lowes junk” hollow core doors throughout my home. Keep up the awesome work! I’m a huge fan !!
Yes the trim is perfect
Super cool projects you have going on, nice plug in for your channel
Ace spray paint is the best I've found. Good, even paint and the best caps.
Really getting into the woodworking, he's the new Norm Abram. "Get Your House Right" book has trim proportions.
I'll have to see it finished with the base board. It looks chunky, to big.
Some lacquer sealer and gloss would also be nice for finish.
Really fine work.
I couldn’t have different casings around my doors through the house
I love that casing but I'm not a fan of the plinth blocks. I think it looks better going straight into the floor. In fact, I'll probably do something similar in my home when the time comes (don't even have drywall up yet so I'm not sure when that will be).
For the laundry room, the washer and dryer. Looks really nice. But what if you need to do maintenance on the machines? Leak? Replace the units? Is the trim on door leading to the garage blocking the machine from being pulled out? I’m always torn between finished look and ease of maintenance…how to balance?
I thought you would use white oak for door trim to match the floor and doors. Plinth blocks are normally flush with the casing on the
inside edge, no reveal. Also, plinth block height is normally determined by the height of the base molding plus the reveal of base
molding to front of plinth block.
You mentioned using ash on your trim, are you guys having same issue with all the white ash trees dying? Here in the midwest, north western Missouri, the ash borers are murdering all the white ash trees, I just had one, 80 plus yrs old, brought down before it wreaked havoc on my house, and another yet to come down, it's amazing how they bore smack dab in the center all the way thru the tree, branches and all.
Beautiful wood , extremely hard to split, pertneer need a wood splitter.
I am saving some of it for future wood projects.
Also want to say, I truly enjoy your videos, very educational
Im thinking your baseboard is going to be structural :). Beautiful work on this and your house is looking lovely.
Tony from longford.....if you're still out there,I hope your well 👍
Terry
Why use plinth blocks with such a deep backband? I love your work though.
lumberyard or home depot junk, that is what some of us can barely afford. 😮💨😒
Nice job !!
What would plinth block look like same height as the bottom rail of door??
The yes from behind the camera. 😂 Yes, every door and piece of trim will not be different.
Not too big on plinth blocks but I will have an open mind from now on👍
Thanks for the info, Do you have a recommendation or source for an applied molding on kitchen cabinet doors.
As I sit with my thumb throbbing from a recent exacto knife cut, 😢, please be careful, safety first. 2 visits to the ER. But a chunk is gone, so it’s gonna be a couple weeks…..
Americans really excel when it comes to mouldings and their application
Hey guys
Holy crap Richard
Nice.
Hello, great videos and tutorials you have helped me a lot. I would like to know what the new tool you have in your garage, the one you made the heavy bathroom door on.
What kind of tape is that i love all the numbers 😮
This block looks like a piece of a thicker casing, but with no details. I don't know... My wife said the same thing and the dog barked at it. BTW, in Brent Hull's book, the "Somerset Room" has simple blocks there.
Cool dog
It’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt! Reckless
Jointer without guard, never safety glasses worn using table saw, jeez
Good content. 👍
Personally not a fan of that it clashes too much, to me it’s a hard transition but to each is own different strokes for different folks 👍
You need to use a different pencil when marking your measurements. Your Hull carpenter pencil is good for rough carpentry, but not fine finished work like you’re doing. Try a mechanical pencil with 0.5 mm lead.
Nice trim but 10 times better if you milled them from oak to match the doors. I did and it made ALL the difference.
The Passion for craft link isn’t sending me to anything right now.
It’s a CZcams 404 “this page is not available”
BM Command is a much better trim paint than Scuff-X. When used with a HVLP it goes on like lacquer paint.
Wood beams = Ash
Wood laundry shelf = Ash
Wife’s name = Ash
Let’s go😮
@3:45 LOL And I didn't even know plinth (sp?) blocks were a thing, but I agree with Ashley. They look like they're supposed to be like that.
14:22 Says the guy that was a Marine. I'm guessing that was not a walk in the park.
Plinth blocks aka dust ledge. Your wife likes it now until she sees the dust.
Dewaulkee underwear..? Take my money!
I love your channel
Brent Hull
Douche...
Happy wife, happy life...
It's "saw us" not "seen us". Sorry. Had to do it.
I'm guessing that in the past you installed more basic, "builder grade, big box store" moldings around your doors and windows but now that you've met Brent Hull you're choosing more "historic, architectural grade" options. How do you decide how far down the rabbit hole you're going to go when applying historically styled moldings to a modern track or ranch style house? I mean, there's a danger that a house with 1980's proportions suddenly is covered in 18th century style trim details and it looks awkward.
Does the 16’ stick work out with a 2680 door if you add the plinth blocks?
@@henrypeisch5289 I guess what I’m asking is , when you are cutting casing to install it, a 16” stick normally will be too short. You need like a 17’ stick to get the sides and top from one stick. You add a plinth block and now you have an extra 16-24” depending on the length of your block.
In my opinion the custom door trim looks too massive for the door and room that it will be installed in. Maybe scale the trim down by one third.
It's cool that your using your home to experiment and try new things ,but you need to think if your going to want to sell you day if so it might be better to stick to one design moving forward. If not it will look very eclectic.
K.I.S.S
Need to drop in pre-made double or triple paned modules into your homemade windows and exterior doors…it’s OK to look classic but not OK to throw away your R value.
Ain't a problem in Texas I guess
@@danielyeary148 😂 I live about 35 miles from Richard in Dallas…it gets hotter than hell.
