La façon dont je fabrique ces boites en « cuir bouilli » me vaut beaucoup de questions.
Je partage avec vous dans ce tutoriel la méthode qui me semble la plus facile pour obtenir un résultat très similaire, en apparence, à ces boîtes portatives médiévales.
Ce procédé ne constitue pas une vérité établie sur la fabrication de ces œuvres de cuir.
Tant de modèles différents ont été produits au Moyen Âge que ce tutoriel ne saurait tous les résumer.
Solide et légère, la boite de cuir réalisée dans ce tutoriel n'est qu'un exemple de ce qu'il est possible de faire avec du cuir à tannage végétal, quelques outils et de la simple gélatine alimentaire.
Avec cette méthode et un peu d'imagination, il est possible de créer des objets aux formes atypiques qui ne sont constitués que de collagène et de tannins végétaux.

Errata sur cette première partie :
- Les couches peuvent se chevaucher sur une surface plus grande que montré ici, au niveau des extrémités.
- Le niveau où est placé le renfort/butée est important. Plus il est placé bas, plus il y aura de frottement pour ouvrir le couvercle et donc, il tiendra mieux fermé. Environ 2 cm est correct.

Regularly questioned about the making of these hardened leather boxes, I am sharing with you, in this tutorial, what I consider the easiest method to obtain the closest possible result in appearance to these medieval portable boxes.
The process, presented here, does not constitute an established truth about the manufacturing of these so-called boiled leather works. So many different models have been produced in the Middle Ages, that this tutorial cannot apply to them all.
Strong and light, the leather box made in this tutorial is an example of what can be done with vegetable tanned leather, a few tools and simple edible gelatin.
Using this method, and a little imagination, will allow you creating atypically shaped objects that are only made up of collagen and vegetable tannins.

Errata about the first part:
- Layers can overlap over a larger scale than shown here, at the endings of the leather patches
- The level where the reinforcement / stopper is placed is important. The lower it is placed, the more friction you will get upon opening the lid and therefore, it will hold tighter closed. About 0,78 in is right.

This is a wonderful tutorial and yields an incredible result, one which I have been looking to duplicate for some items I wish to construct cases for so I will be attempting this very soon. I have a question: Is there a specific ratio or measurement of gelatin to water, or is there a specific viscosity or stickiness that is desired? I assume an overly concentrated glue wouldnt be much of a problem overall but an under-concentrated one would likely have trouble adhering. If you could answer that I would be most grateful, and again, excellent work!

Yes indeed, once the gelatin is full of water, I add half a volume of clear water to have a good concentration. The well-cooled glue should have a fairly firm consistency. An under-dosage can give a disappointing result, this recipe works better with less dense leathers in a cool room so that the glue quickly takes a "loving" texture. The test of sticking the fingers together is quite indicative of good concentration.
