    The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

    I work as an EMT... had a call for an intoxicated patient four years ago.... guy was singing this at the TOP OF HIS LUNGS in the back of my ambulance. Made for a very interesting trip to the hospital... we still pick this patient up on occasion and he is now known as "Henry VIII" among the staff and yes, he did the spelling out Henry also, slamming his foot on the stretcher for each letter....until we had to yell at him to stop doing that.

    As a 4-year-old, I went around the house singing, "I'm Henery the ape I am...Henery the ape I am I am!" Needless to say it cracked my family up. And I suppose it is linked to some of my earliest memories as a child. I was born on the 4th of May, so it probably was in heavy rotation on the radio that summer of '65. Music sure can be part of one's most distant memories. This song wouldn't likely have had the staying power of a Beatles' song, so I can link it to being 4 years old.

      The Dave Clark Five first appeared live singing Glad All Over. It sounded HORRIBLE! It's not that they didn't sound great as a band (they were voted the #1 live group in London around 1963), but due to Clark's very loud drum playing the sound engineer didn't mic his drums properly and they drowned out the rest of the music. After that they started recording a backing track and added the vocals live and eventually they just lip-synched everything. That live version of Glad All Over was taken down (maybe DC complained) and the only live recording of them was their royal performance where they sung 19 Days and Georgia.

  • @TomElvisSmith
    @TomElvisSmith Před 3 lety +86

    I'm curious as to whether the people who think this is a precursor to punk rock realize that "I'm Henry VIII, I Am" is a British music hall song written in 1910. It was recorded by Harry Champion at that time, one of the most famous stars of the music hall, and became one of his most popular songs along with others like "Any Old Iron" and "A Little Bit of Cucumber". It was most likely sung by British schoolchildren in their school yards throughout the last century. Herman's Hermits also recorded "Leaning on a Lamppost" which was George Formby's signature song (and a much better song in my opinion), so they were fans of this old style of music. If anything, by recording an old school rhyme and music hall standard, Herman's Hermits proved that a popular British group during the Invasion could record almost anything and make it into a hit during this period in music history.
    I say this as a fan of the group. I really enjoy their recordings of "There's a Kind of a Hush", "A Little Bit Better", "Dandy", "Years May Come, Years May Go", "Mrs. Brown", "I'm Into Something Good", etc.

    - I, Fernando, thank God that for thirty years 1991 - 2021 when I was (a young twenty-year-old) and after having concluded "the mother of all battles" (USA vs IRAQ) in the Persian Gulf. In the middle of the 80's, when I was a fan of British and European Heavy Metal (North American) as a teenager, when the fashion of Heavy Hard Rock (1990-1991) passed, I was fascinated and rediscovered the old Rock 'N Roll (my parents' music) ... Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, all the way to the beginning of the "Wonderful Decade" ... the 60's Beatles and the first "English wave" with the most of the sound "Mersey Beat" and the following groups like The Herman Hermits, who in 1991 released a bi-CD as well as on VHS ... of "some" of the best of the famous Ed Sullivan Show and it was there when I first heard this "rolita" (I'm Henry VIII) and with an audience in the studio! 🤗🤗🤗👍👍👍

    Best part is how close the live version is to the studio version. Ain't no auto-tune round these parts, no sir. Also, totally underappreciated guitar solo. Good stuff.

    Look at the pair of new Gibson ES-345s~!!! WOW~!!! I'll take them both and throw in the Gibson T-Bird Bass while you're at it...This song went #1 week of August 7th...But the entire month before, July?...'(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction'...The EXPLOSIVE #1 by The Rolling Stones...My band, The Beau Street Runners, Franconia, Virginia, were playing IT instead of this one at the pool and backyard parties...usually 2 or 3 times on the same gig...everyone could dance to it...

    After his show I talked to Pete last night...the consumate entertainer. He smiled, shook my hand twice, and I told him what a blessing to the world he's been and continues to be. I had to repeat it three times. He leaned in and told me he was deaf. Then I said I LOVE YOU. It just popped out...I wasn't expecting it!!

    I remember when this song was frist popular in the early 1960s. I was probably 9 years old. Peter Noone was only 8 yars older than me and the group was already internationally successful. A few years ago Peter Noone was playing at the park across the street from where I live. He put on a great show. Go and see him if you have a chance. He is still touring.

    0:51 - The bass player is left handed, playing a right-handed bass turned upside down. The peg for the strap is on the lower half of the body, meaning he has to balance the bass with his arms to keep it in place. Amazing that he didn't spend the necessary money to obtain a left-handed bass after all of that success selling hit records.

    I was a teenager in the 60's, so a word of warning- Nowadays a lot of 60's songs are so-called "remastered" and sound like tinny squeaky rubbish so people should make sure they only watch the genuine originals on youtube, and only buy genuine original stuff on DVD..:)

    This is so nostalgic i heard this song in the car once when i was little and never forgot it unfortunatly i am bad at picking up words from songs so instead of Henry i heard annary and reminded me of a girl named Anna because i heard Annary i never knew it was Henry until i found this video it was hard to find because i typed Annery but nothing came up but eventually this came up.
