  • A cruise from Riley Green, through Withnell Fold, down the Johnson's Hillock lock flight where we are blocked by an abandoned cruiser.
Then through Botany Bay and finishing at the village of Adlington

There is so much history in that section you have cruised there. The old mill at Withnell Fold once made paper (high quality) for bank notes. I do guided heritage walks for IWA and Lancaster Canal Trust which start and finish at the top lock at Johnsons Hillock near Wheelton and the lock flight itself was originally built c1814/15 by the Lancaster Canal Company with the Leeds and Liverpool finally getting completed and connected in 1816. The building of the M61 in 1968/69 cut the Walton summit branch (former Lancaster canal southern section) in 3 places but two tunnels, bridges and parts of the old canal still survive in places.
