    For others facing a "critical" drive... Before pulling the drive... 1) Ensure that your backups are up-to-date; 2) run a full scrub, to heal any errors (once you pull the drive, any errors are baked into your volume. Tootleloo.

      also I'd add - make some tests on the new drive before plugging into NAS, last thing you want a new broken drive during rebuild :D

    I really appreciate that you called out the fact that those of us not having access to commercial storage budgets can't just go out and grab new HDDs to use now. With consumer markets moving to SSDs, HDDs themselves have become professional hardware (at minimum, before even getting into the server grade stuff), and it shows in the pricing.
    Great to see GoHardDrive mentioned. I've done two orders with them now. Used enterprise SATA SSDs are my goto for affordable disks at the capacities I want. I'm very confident in their reliability when combined with a proper backup.
    Hope everything's running smoothly. Congrats on 80k! :)

      @@DBTechYT I found them for $89 each. It's a very reasonable price.

    A bummer your drive failed but a plus for those of us who wanted to see the process done.
    Thanks for the GoHardDrive tip.
    Can you answer a quick question? I have a spare drive bay in my DS923+ and was wondering if I could use it for backing up the NAS to it rather than using a USB drive. I’m wanting to take a backup and then store it in a safe deposit box for off site safety. I would use two drives for this so I always have one at home and one in the bank. I’d do backups weekly or so. Thoughts?

    • @DBTechYT
      @DBTechYT  Před měsícem +1

      You should be able to use that drive bay for as a backup. Just make sure the drive you put in it is larger than the amount of data you're backing up and then just create another storage pool with the new drive. That said, I've never done this, so my answer isn't guaranteed. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

    That's what all of us muggles have to deal with, none of us have sponsors or synology money so we have to go with refurbs...it is what it is...but believe it or not, they are usually just as good, even with the stupid "unsupported" nag screen...
    Oh yeah...scrubbing, and re-silvering or rebuilding an array can take HOURS...you can still use it, but it will be slower as many IOPS are being used to rebuild the parity data back to the new blanked drive, on a home NAS a quarterly scrubbing should be enough...monthly for a production NAS...

    I recently had two Exos drives go bad in a self-built TrueNAS server. I was able to exchange both (from Seagate directly) as they were under warranty. Each disk was under $30 to replace to have them ship a replacement out first and for me to send it back. Have you thought about replacing the disk under warranty? Should be much cheaper than a new drive.

    • @DBTechYT
      @DBTechYT  Před měsícem

      I definitely would have gone that route if I had purchased the drives. The drives were provided to me by Synology when they sent me the device to review back in 2021. I still need to plug the drive in and see what kind of data I can get from it and see how far gone it really is.

    • @bwacek
      @bwacek Před měsícem

      @@DBTechYT If you go to Seagate's support page, they have a page to let you look up the drive's serial number to see if the warranty is still good. If the warranty is still good, it might be worth trying after you get whatever you can rescue off of it. When I made the warranty claims for mine, it didn't ask for my proof of purchase or anything, just the serial numbers and the address of the person they are dealing with. I had purchased some of the drives from Amazon, NewEgg, and B&H, so Seagate had no way of knowing who purchased the drives.
      Even though you didn't buy them, they may still have the warranty active (Exos currently come with 5 year warranty). It's worth taking a minute to see.

    • @DBTechYT
      @DBTechYT  Před měsícem

      Thanks for the info. Just checked and got this: Warranty Information Not Available. Please contact support.
      I'm guessing it's because Synology bought it and may have sat on it as inventory before they sent it to me. Was definitely worth a look, though :)

    Same thing happened to me 6 months ago, except I didn't have any type of redundancy set up ebcause at first I was just using it as expansion until it got too big. I had to save my data on an external drive and then rebuild my arrays with adequate sized HDD. It took me the whole weekend just moving stuff around.

    • @DBTechYT
      @DBTechYT  Před měsícem

      that sucks!! what I really want to do is back up all my data (still working on how I'd do that with my current setup) and then replace my 8TB drives with some 12 or 14TB drives and then move all the data back

      @@DBTechYT synology OS is installed on the disk drive and if you remove something nilly willy it will beeak the OS. I think you should probably reach out to Synology support and see what they recommend cuz Im seeing you have 25+TB and that's a lot of money.
      It might actually be cheaper to just buy another Synology box and put 14TB drives in it but check in with synology first before doing anything.

      I read most of what I needed before I recorded the video. And I'm "out of breath" because in 2016 I lost 30% of my lung capacity due to multiple respiratory issues I was dealing with while in the hospital for 5+ months. I'm also "out of breath" because I lost even more of my lung capacity earlier this year when I was hospitalized for most of January due to pneumonia and bilateral pulmonary embolisms. So... Maybe don't rush to judge someone before you know what they've been through.
