Freddie was taking a lot of meds at this time due to his disease and they were messing with his head sometimes and giving him strange dreams. He wrote this song about just that.

Did you notice that Freddie was singing in his natural baritone register for this song?
One of the band members said it one of their crew in the gorilla suit, not Elton. He and his friend Peter Straker wrote this song accompanied by uproarious laughter. It was Freddie's way to deal with his deteriorating health and the fear of possible future consequences of his medication and illness.
Diane Moseley, his clothing designer, said they put layers upon layers of clothing on under that suit to keep him warm and to hide how very thin and frail he actually had become. That is why it was filmed in black and white and why he had heavy makeup on as well.

This is pure genius. I've heard many times that because of his weight loss he was cold all the time. So he wore two layers of thermals over his suit. He had his full faculties here and had such a good humor about himself. H
Freddie was unlike anyone else. Love Freddie forever💕💕💕💕

The thing about Queen is their unpredictability. Every song is different. Can I suggest 'Breakthru' which was filmed on a moving train.

“Going mad” is the same as we would say “going crazy”. As others have said, Freddie was very ill and also in pain at the time of this video. He was afraid of AIDS related dementia, and wrote this song to add humor to his fears. Band members have said that Freddie NEVER complained during his illness. The gorilla is a mystery, though there are rumors that Elton John wore the gorilla suit. I have no reliable info on who was in that gorilla costume. Also- pay attention to the words “knitting with only one needle”. “My kettle is boiling over”, “I really haven’t got a clue”
. creative ways of saying he’s going mad (crazy).

Freddie lost a lot of his weight, but not his voice and great sense of humor, he also kept his humanity and watered the pinguins.

He was very ill at this stage but came into the studio one day with Brian Roger and John to finish the last album Made in Heaven. He threw down 4 shots of vodka, finished the last track then he went home and passed away a few days later. As a club DJ, Audio Visual Engineer, and being 61 years old, I grew up with Queen from the very first album in 1971 until Made in Heaven was finished. Freddie was a genius and that fucking virus took away the best front man of all time. RIP Freddie.

This is a very lighthearted take. On the serious side effects of his medications. Not to mention. End stage AIDS. Even with the camera, & layering of cloths. You can see he is painfully thin. The use of Black & White vrs Color. Is a means of covering just how ill he is. He only made one final farewell video. after this one. Through it all. He kept his sense of humor.

And his voice! For as long as possible before he died, he was still laying down vocals for new Queen music that he wouldn't be alive to see the release of.

You should react to the making of this video. You get to see Freddie telling everyone what he wants them to do. A glimmer into his creative genius, he would have made a great director.

Awesome! The visuals look like something Tim Burton would love (they are especially reminiscent of Edward Scissorhands)! In the words of Charlie Chaplin- "Life is a tragedy in closeup and a comedy in long shot" A cool little tidbit, guitarist Brian May is a passionate animal rights/environment protection activist. Alongside badgers, hedgehogs, and foxes; penguins are among his favorite animals, so he had a blast with them in the shooting of this video. In some photos of when he was younger, he wore a cute penguin pin on his lapel. Some of the behind-the-scenes footage is really cute/funny.

I'm in grad school right now and we're two and a half weeks from the end of the Spring semester, with four doctoral level courses keeping me extremely busy, but I also have two jobs totaling 50 work hours per week at the same time, and this song is how I feel right now with two papers due in less than 12 hours, an absolutely killer headache all day today, and being in desperate need of sleep before a full day of classes tomorrow. This is 100% the perfect song for total burnout.

This is one of my favorite Queen videos although the circumstances behind it are quite grim. Freddie was quite ill, hence the reason it was shot in black an white to help hide his true appearance. There is a behind the scenes video if you're interested that shows how it was put together.

I love this video and I’m pretty sure Freddie had a hand in some of the directing!! It gives me a Tim Burton vibe
kinda dark but humorous! I really applaud Brian, Roger, & John
I’m sure it was difficult. And kudos to Freddie who can make fun of himself under those circumstances! Clever song!! May I recommend THE MIRACLE (the video is a miracle). 🧾🧾

Yes, he did a lot of the directing. Have you seen the behind the scenes video of this shoot that Rudy (Do-Ro) put together? It's an awesome video with Freddie telling everyone what to do and some special hilarious penguin adventures.

Roger said Freddie had been in the studio for 2 hours waiting for the others to turn up
When he saw Roger he said ive been here so long im going mad and had started writting this!
He finished it later, he was probably also subconsciously worried about aids related dementia
On one documentary he says hurry up or I'll forget my name!
