Dusty, this is your ranch and you know what's best on how to get things done. People should just mind their own business instead of trying to stick their noses into the way you do things. I've had sort of the same thing happen to me with people trying to tell me how to trap feral cats. They can talk all they want, but for me, the best way is to trap them inside of our garage. I can't trap them outside because I really don't want a skunk going into that live trap! Or any other critter either! And what do I do with those feral cats? They go to meet our vet and he neuters them and sees to any injuries. Then they come right back to our property. So you just keep on doing what's best for your ranch! We love you up here in northwest Ohio!

Dusty you must be really hard up for content. Lots of folks saying put the bale back on the truck. I don't think you even have to take it off the truck. Just lift it up a bit and take the wrap off right on the truck. I get why you do not want hay on the ground at the gate. You are just trying to make this look harder and more dangerous than it needs to be. Stupid does not gain viewers.

Loved Herriott's books and watching on tv! Loved holding the catgut (at age 4 to 18) while our farm vet did twisted stomach surgeries under the tree between the tree trunk and a tractor. I got to ride along with our farm doc and trailed him when he was on our farm. After our farm moved 200 miles and expanded, i got to go to a milk quality lab with 2 of our new farm docs and one of their techs to learn aseptic milk sampling, striking samples on bi and tri-plates, and how to read the bacterial growth on the plates. Over the years the farm docs taught us to do most treatments. They did preg checks, surgeries (twisted stomach or c-section), problem calvings, and oddball emergencies. Vets taught us how to treat for retained placenta at 24 hours, diagnose the common ailments, and wrote protocols for us to follow for treating various problems. With a large herd, milking 750 cows, our vets trained the new docs on our weekly herd checks and emergency calls. We got to see unusual stuff the docs only read about in their text books. Such an intricate creation! Have a blessed day!

I can think of some reasons why you DON'T do it, but I keep thinking about some sort of double gate setup (like the air lock on a sci-fi spaceship) so you could open the first gate, drive in, close that gate and then open and drive out through a second gate, which could be left open until you returned. At worse some critters would wander into the area between gates, but they couldn't get entirely out of the pasture.

Logically it looks a lot safer to take the netting off further into the pasture than at the gate.

Cut strings then lift it up back up. Safer for you😊

After removing the wrap, place it back on the truck until you get where you want to drop it.

After removing the wrap, Do not leave the roll low, Put the roll BACK UP on the truck before going through the gate and then lower it where you want to unroll it.

You have a roll lift. Keep the roll up until you get to the right place

Dusty, all of the objections you have to cutting the wrap early go away IF you put the round bale back on the truck instead of leaving it hanging out the back. That mechanism swings both ways, and you can keep the bale high and safe, if you just reload the bale onto the back of the truck before you go through the gate. Don't lower it to be near the ground until you have it where you want to feed. Problem solved.

But you could take the wrap off, put it back up on the truck, then lower it again when you are ready? I mean it probably doesn't really make a difference if you do it in the paddock or out, but if you do it outside less chance of an accident with and over excited bison
