John Taylor Gatto not Paul Gotti: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Taylor_Gatto
His book “Dumbing Us Down” is incredible! I had to read it a few times because it was so good and full of interesting thought.
I spent like 10 minutes looking him up, found it and then found this comment 😅
THANK YOU!!! I've been searching for it.
Gatto's book "The Underground History of American Education" is fantastic. An absolute must read for any American, even if you were homeschooler.
Gotta love NY ❤️
I am suddenly so very sorry to be 81 years old. To have been able to be part of this marvelous program would have been so satisfying .
Totally agree at suddenly 79 yrs old, former teacher/school counselor for 42 yrs & sad/glad to have been a part of the deteriorating education system. Didn't get first degree until age 38 yrs. The curiosity of our younger generation will have to be fed so learning will move forward but the greatest battle is between good & evil. I pray often.
@@patiencefalters9024 I totally agree on your point re: battle between good and evil. It seems the foremost in where our country has gone awry. We have lost our moral compass.
Yeah. If I would have gone to a school like that when I was 6, it would have been a much better experience. I'm envious of you guys there in the USA that you have the oportunity to send your children and grand children to a school like that
@@HakaiKaien I’m in the US and envy the fact there isn’t one of these schools near me. I would literally go hungry, drive a beat up vehicle, anything it takes to get my granddaughter in this school. Public schools here are toxic. Plus we just had another school shooting.
Those Texans are so innovative. Another example of how individual freedom beats central control.
I homeschooled my 6 kids K - 12. They are all highly successful adults. They are now considering homeschooling their kids. I couldn’t be more grateful. Phases of Learning by Oliver DeMille, The Underground History of American Education by Gatto, and Free to Learn by Peter Gray are all excellent if you are considering homeschooling.
Did you stick with a specific curriculum?
Thank you so much! I'm considering this myself and have been trying to figure out where to start my education on the subject.
Agreed. Those are all excellent books
Any other info? I'm planning to homeschool when my kids reach school age but have no idea what I'm doing 😅
I homeschool .. 3 at home, 4 graduated now…

The real MVP
Hello Dr Peterson. My name is Sharian. I’m not sure if you’ll ever see this comment but I have been wanting to say this to you for a long long time.
Thank you
Thank you for dedicating your life to help so many people improve themselves and to have a more positive outlook on life.
Listening to your podcasts, speeches and interviews completely changed my perspective on life. You encouraged me to seek knowledge and to do better for myself. Showed me how to better express my love to my family and friends. And most importantly to forgive myself.
Because of you I am in university now, studying.
I am now looking forward to a day where I’ll be a mother. I didn’t even understand how truly valuable that was until i listened to you.
So thank you.
I hope to have the pleasure of meeting you one day
Warm regards,

Omg not this…. 🍭
This mans a genius and a hero. My younger brother had a hard time with reading. To the point public schools had put him in special reading classes for several years. Fortunately for me i never had that issue i was and still am a voracious reader. Im 32 now and still read at least a few chapters a day. But i watched my brother struggle with reading for several years in his middle school years. Im in high-school at the time and i had just had enough of it he was insanely quick with math of any kind so he was not by any means dumb r slow. I convinced him to come with me to the local library. And then i sat him down and asked what he was interested in. What kind of stories did he like what shows did he really enjoy. And then we went around and found him a couple smaller books, thay met his intrest, that were at low to middling reading level. This was all stuff i had read when i was much younger so i had an idea what they were and the level they were at. And it took him weeks to read those few books. But he read them. Something he had never managed before. Hed never managed to finish an actual book on his own time before. It was amazing to see. And then he came to me and asked to go find more books. By the end of the year he was reading at normal level. By 18months he was reading above his grade level and had surpased all of his reading issues.
Intrest is absolutely KEY to a kids development. And public schools are near worthless at that. I was able to get my brother on a path to bettering himself and growing in less than a year when the school spent several years sticking him in special classes and seeing zero improvement for him. By simply seeing the problem and pushing him towards what interested him. And he did the rest.
Work with your kids interests. If you can put those interests into relation to what you want them to learn and understand they will do the work for you. Your job is only to guide them on a very general direction and let them grow.
What an amazing gift you gave to your brother.
Being a mentor is such a privilege and a very gratifying and joyful thing to watch your "fledgling" finally take flight. 😊👍👏👏👏
What an amazing brother you are!
That gave me an idea to handle an issue with my 5yo boy.
God bless you and your family! 😘
Those Texans are so innovative. Another example of how individual freedom beats central control.
I was the same absolutely hated to read, one year my oldest sister got me a book which I immediately threw in a drawer and left for a couple years, then I got bored one day and opened the book I didn't put it down until I finished it, which probably took the better part of a week. That single book sparked a love of reading that could never have been forced, if I hadn't come to the book I don't think I would have fell in love with reading the same way.
My son is 19, he started his education in a steiner kindergarten that he absolutely loved going to. When he started mainstream school, he hated it, he used to cling to the bannister at home crying he didn't want to go. I called the school one morning to say its no good he won't be in school today and the teacher started to penalise me about how late he was yesterday, I explained because he needed calming down and reassuring before I could get him there and she responded with "my son used to be the same for 3 years, I felt like throwing myself in the canal but he is OK now" That was enough for me, I told her we are home educating as from today" and we never looked back.
I really appreciate my Steiner education now especially in later life. I realise I was taught to think and argue both sides and I just assumed the other schools did the same but I'm finding out they seemingly didn't. Also the focus on mythology was amazing.
Ma'am, may I ask (creator of the comment Seabreeze Designs) what is the "steiner" program? I am a young 30 year old mother, of a going on 2nd grader (daughter) and starting Kindergarten (son) who's tempted to remove them from school....
However, my kids are the type that thrive off of social lives, and being home would ruin their personality, but the schools are wack, and they truly aren't teaching future adult life skills, government skills, manners, discipline and plain academia is now dismissed. I'm searching for something that's the beat of both worlds.
My kids also are above average on their current levels of academia. My 5 year old is doing beginners multination and my 7 year old is a bored in 1st grade. Not because of any special time spent teaching them at home, they just are that smart. I need to nurture this, and I am homeschooling them, I won't he able to educate them with the proper curricula at the fast pace they learn on.
Thank you for reading all of this.
GG
@@taylarwalker17 I think the "Steiner" program is most likely an American version of the works of the Austrian Rudolf Steiner. His philosophy of "Anthroposophie" is extremely popular in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and is the foundation of teaching in the so called "Waldorfschools" / or "Free Schools", which are essentially open to the public but not controlled by the state. It's the biggest "franchise" of non-governmental schools in Germany.

I'm meaning the in the most fundamental sense. Not in the literary, logos. It's the snakes in your head, making you afraid. And snakes symbolize evil in some real sense. And when on a plane, it combines fear of confined spaces with the fear of snakes and on top of that (puts hands on top of each other) the fear of dying from a plane crash. And you want to yell into the abyss; "Enough is enough. I've had it with these mothereffin snakes on this mothereffin plane!" But you are too paralysed by fear, so you cheer in relief when Samuel L Jackson does it for you.
In some sense he is Jesus saving mankind from the snakes. Snakes on that plane.
But it depends on what you mean by Jesus and dying. He did die. But came back. As a black man. In a movie. Fighting the evil snakes of time.
We home schooled our 3 adult daughters, for a myriad of reasons. I wasn't initially drawn to this video, but I'm so glad I gave it a chance. The Acton Academy sounds exactly like the way I wish I had been "educated". Public school succeeded in nearly killing my innate love of learning, something I'm only beginning to fully realize.
Oh my god me too. I never knew i had a love for learning until revently. And im starting believe that maybe im smart lol! 🤯😂
Too many people have been killed in schools. Unfortunately a lot of parents can't teach their children at home because of work, lack of insight, organization and patience. I remember my mom telling me one day that she was told not to teach any thing to the child at home.
I never heard of a Steiner school. What is it like? Montessori were supposed to be very good. I would try to provide learning at home after school by giving my kids creative opportunities, work with a globe, and a lot of word play. Jr high/high school/ on top of several moves/ and dad's personality nearly ruined their lives. Thank you. I am a new mom and want my daughter to have the best education and life possible. I went through public school in NY, graduated in 2014, and witnessed so much suffering of those who did not fit into the system. One of my best teachers was in history and he had a “bs meter” which he would adjust with happy and angry faces to represent how he felt about what he was teaching that day.

@CZcams music that was JP's situation. He was in a very chaotic time in his life, with all of those problems I listed. His docs, who he trusted, recommended benzos. He took them thinking the docs knew what they were doing and had his best interest at heart.
You throwing judgement on him without even knowing his story is even weirder.
OUTSTANDING interview. Already started looking in to where Acton Academies are.
I'm a huge supporter of apprenticeships while people are still children. Children need to learn about what is available to them while they are very young. Too many people only see the closed doors long before they get an opportunity to explore. Hooray for Jeff Sandefer and his compadres.
I think the mentor-apprentice model is how humans actually learn best.
I was a Montessori teacher for 11 years teaching 4-6 graders in a mixed age classroom. So glad to hear him acknowledging Montessori education as it has been often overlooked. Decades ahead of it's time. Would love for Jordan to look in to Montessori education and have a show about that as well.
I began homeschooling in 1983 when there was a real threat of arrest and very little direction. A group called Unschooler Network (?) advised me to proceed in a manner that would set good precedents. I had discovered by achievement testing that all students were a full year behind their 1963 counterparts. Probably the most important thing I learned was the importance of leading the children into a desire to learn and a commitment. The year spent in Montessori School was valuable. When I sought out teaching material I saw the deterioration of quality in textbooks. I can't imagine how poor the material is forty years later. (I made a set of vocabulary flashcards taken from the SAT goals. After working on the cards, I was able to speed read some books I thought the kids would enjoy. Highlighting and taking sample sententences from Dr. Who and Star Wars as well as biographies and stories of history that proved valuable. It's incredible how much time is wasted in public schools. You find there is time for fun learning, too. Even so, mothers today are committed to their own careers and the thought of sacrificing time and money by putting children first still isn't properly respected.
Jordan, I'm wondering if there is any way you could sit and discuss this topic with Gabor Maté, specifically emotional attachment and children. I have followed both your work and talks relating the impact of trauma in child development and noted the differences in both your approaches. The both of you are respected in this area and it would be really interesting to hear how you both diverge and agree on this important subject. A really interesting debate if you could make it happen?
I absolutely second this request. I find myself listening to what Dr Peterson says as far as adults are concerned, but for raising my two children I lean towards Dr Mate approach and mindset. I have to say that the two approaches are not just different in cosmetics, but really deeply fundamentally different. Hopefully Dr Peterson's team would consider such request :) Have a good day everybody :)
Unfortunately, I've found Dr. Mate to have a judgmental tone when referring to Jordan (he doesnt name him but obviously refers to him) and sometimes straw mans his ideas. For instance, he criticized Jordan for saying that children should not be comforted when having tantrums and instead be allowed to "return to normal" because comforting them will reinforce bad behavior. Gabor has said that children should be allowed to express negative emotion as it is their defrnse against the world. Theyre obviously referring to different things. Jordan has always advocated for "shadow" integration to become yoyr best self. What he meant by not allowing tantrums to be reinforced is obviously so that children learn how to communicate their emotions in a better manner instead of trying to use aggression. Gabor took this and distorted it to imply that Jordan says childrens emotions should be disregarded. He also takes an overly maternal, smothering approach almost instead of the balance between maternal care and paternal responsibility that Jordan advocates. So I dont think he'll come on if invited. I hope I'm wrong though.
@@tonyshine89 I agree but there seems to be a cut off point in the divergence of their approach. It's as though both men agree with the fundamental principles of theorists like piaget but draw different interpretations from the research. Peterson seems to take an expression of one's emotions in childhood as a task to be taken and understood by the child and Maté seems to gravitate towards suppression as detrimental to emotional development. Hopefully, they get to discuss it. Have a lovely day and thanks for your comment✌️
@@dranreb1118 Some great points indeed, however; others would be wonderful to hear both men speak and debate their ideas so that both could clarify the meaning of their interpretation of the childhood development theorists, as well as incorporating their own ideas based around their experiences as clinicians in psychological practice. Two wonderful scientists with two amazing back stories. I'm sure they'd remain friends after they spoke and clarified one another's points. Let's hope they come together to talk as it would be a great show.
@@dranreb1118 your observations are indeed true. I was quite disappointed when I heard the subtle Peterson reference by Mate when interviewed by Rogan. I actually disagree with Dr Peterson on the suggested time out during tantrums in a attempt to make the child learn social behaviour. I strongly agree that children learn social behaviour by the day to day behaviour of their parents and other grown ups around them. Doesnt matter if they throw tantrums due to their still underdeveloped brain, when they outgrow the phase of tantrums, then they will stop. So in this sense I disagree with Dr Peterson. In any case, there is a proper and respectful way to disagree and so far Dr Mate didnt cross that line, but is slowly getting there.
That was such a great discussion and super interesting. I loved it and I'm so happy to have the opportunity to listen to such content! Thank You!
Closed caption would be nice for the deaf and hard of hearing people please and thank you
CZcams does have a closed captioning feature. Though it isn't the greatest, unless you enjoy a random Mystery Science Theater vibe, at the most awkward moments 😅 but it would be awesome if they could add CC in the podcast ❤️
[ Chrome > Settings > Accessibility > Captions > Toggle the "Live Caption" to turn on. ]
Once that's set, then turn the CZcams's volume on -- Then you'll have the live caption.
I feel you.
Another option is to turn on the Transcription.
It will lay out the same CC but right beside the video live.
I like it because I can skim through less interesting parts visually and quickly, or pause and see the complete idea instead of 2 lines at a time.
Hope this helps.
CC works on mine....just press the button
I'm an educator in Singapore and wow ... this conversation was loaded. Thank you for this. I plan to replay this a few times over on a podcast app just to make sure I can comprehend these ideas on a deeper level. Very awesome stuff
I have, let's say, an unusually high IQ and bloody hated school. If I'd gone to your school, sir, I believe my parents would have had to pry me out of the classroom at the end of the day. God bless you both. Much love. May the next generations be empowered like no group of humans ever before
The reference early to "Paul Gotti" by Dr. Peterson appears to actually be "Weapons of Mass Instruction" by John Taylor Gatto.
thank you buddy, I couldn't find the book online.
@@JasonPilley yeah that's probably the right book. I was lucky to stumble across what I found
@@JasonPilley What did you like about it?
You can tell when JP has someone good on when he listens as much as he speaks.
Great conversation
You are a beacon of light in a world that was succumbing to darkness. I believe we are moving more towards the light. Please keep doing what you are doing, because it is helping spread ripples of positivity throughout the world.
I had a social studies education degree and when I started working, I saw how much the system was failing. I quit.
I saw my own child getting a pink-slip for saying "Oooo look, a robin". My wife hears about Acton Academy and we decided to open one up this fall.
We've struggled mightily with regulations. Our state had a director saying schools must be a non-profit (his own opinion maybe). After 6 months of challenging this, we finally hired an attorney to help and got the okay.
During this time, Jeff was awesome and offered our franchise fees back if the state kept us from getting it done. Not only does he have a great model and business mind, but he's a great person as well.
What was the process of starting one of these academies? Do they require certain degrees or certifications from someone trying to start their own?
@@chrisbolton1060 Franchise fees (15k one-time + 3% revenue yearly). You fill out an application, do a video and a few other things explaining who you are and why you want to do this (before you pay fees). You have a 2 day orientation.
No certifications or degrees are necessary. It really comes down to "do you have the right attitude?"
The bigger question is whether your state will allow it? Almost definitely, but what hoops will you have to go through. In North Dakota, it is necessary to have a licensed teacher which is largely anti-acton academy, but our guide that we are hiring loves the Acton model and is willing to let go of all that. There is also the non-profit vs for-profit which is roughly a 50/50 split from what I've heard is reported. There's alsp things like student to teacher/guide ratios and other rules to follow. If you're interested, I'd read Courage to Grow and look at school approval laws.
Hopefully this helps give you some idea, but a lot of the model for the owners is the same as for learners/students...here's the resources, now figure it out.
@@michaelkoska4084 thanks for the information and good luck to yourself!
@@chrisbolton1060 Thanks! Good luck to you as well!
Besides other fascinating moments of this dialogue,… pride vs virtue of humbleness, and admission of our own ignorance… how deep, liberating … thank you Sir! Will carry this wisdom till end of my life.
Very much enjoyed this conversation.
I do admire the both of you
I really really like these better in person. Alot more intimate.
I really did find this so fascinating. Thank you both for this discussion.
I have learned so much. Thank you for posting and doing this interview!!
Jordan Peterson is a hero and legend and going to change the entire world with his new education program.
amen
Peterson is so damn right about business/job opportunities. I have a business with about 30 employees and if some kid would come up to me and behave like they explained at 01:08:00 I'd be so damn thrilled I'd hire him immediately. A kid like that who's following up on his promises I'd show absolutely everything, open every door for him and give him every opportunity there is. Only problem is that no one EVER asks like this. Most of the time people dont even ask at all. Ask and the door will open. But apparently that line has been forgotten.
I was in Jeff's class at UT back in 1992. Best class and worst grade I got in school. I am so pleased to see how he has thrust himself into education and the philosophy of education. We ended up home schooling our kids for similar reasons that he did. I like his Acton Academy approach. I almost wish that I could start one myself. I just finished searching to see if there is an Acton Academy in Houston near my grandchildren. Not yet.
Wow, I'm surprised there isn't one in Houston. I grew up in Houston but now life in L.A. They have a couple here, including one of the first ones.
I believe there is one in Spring and The Woodlands.
@@jodiellis4807for sure. Our kids go to the woodlands one (which is actually in magnolia) but theres also many in spring
Asking questions is the best way to motivate people to think.
I'm following up with this immediately because the principles in this video aligned with me SO strongly it was like lightening down my spine. I've been SEARCHING.
I am currently in grad school for Education Administration, but have never once pictured myself in the public schools because I disagree with them so strongly. I'm very entrepreneurial... this is destiny. Truly. I've never felt so invigorated, so RIGHT!
Perhaps you might consider starting your own Acton Academy affiliate where you are? :)
The things that make you one "entrepreneurial" are often the opposite of what make one good at administration. How do you manage the difference?

I highly recommend the book Summerhill by A.S.Neill. It will absolutely blow your mind and enthuse anyone with a passion for child learning. I promise you’ll not regret reading it. It was first given to me by a teacher when I was just 19. I’m now 52 and I’ll never underestimate the influence this book had on my life.

I love this man! Beyond intelligent.
Everyone has a place. Education’s purpose is to help all of us find where we can contribute to our community.
I really enjoyed this conversation, especially Jeff's story about asking this son how to be a good father. Thank you.
We home schooled our kiddos. When teen years arrived, we enrolled her into Acton, and it was the best decision we ever made!
Ohhh I with we had an Acton too!
I homeschool now.
I am just finding this video, still viewing the introduction, but I just wanted to say how absolutely excited I am for this content. Our children deserve SO much more than we are giving them with public education.
Wana make some children find one of these an send them there after your done watching this
One of the most fascinating and inspiring podcasts that I have listened to - Jordan has met his equal !
As parents of an almost kindergarten age child, we've been struggling with the decision of what education path we're going to take him down. I really wish there were a program like this near us.
Homeschooling is an option depending on where you live and how much one of you can earn while the other is home teaching. There is a lot of resources now for nontraditional teaching. I was Homeschooled by my mother and as a male I think I would have chafed at the bit if I was in a traditional school. I only spent 3-4 hours a day doing school and was just fine going to collage when I was 18. In fact my peers where unused to the freedom of collage and so did not do as well, I imagine this would have been the same situation in the real world. My family was middle class/ low middle during my childhood.
@@lexpox329 we really like the idea of homeschooling, but because of covid we weren't able to let him play with other kids very much and I really want him to be able to be around other kids more regularly. I worry a lot about what Dr. Peterson says about children being doomed to a rough life if they aren't properly socialized by the age of four and feel like we failed our son because of factors we couldn't control.
@@nyasupaa Your son will be fine. What Peterson doesn’t point out is that unsocialized children who develop an anti-social and aggressive personality ALSO have parents who are divorced or emotionally and physically absent
@@nyasupaa same here. My son had just turned two when covid started. I worry about socializing too, but I'm more worried about the public schools teaching CRT and gender ideology and focusing less on academic success.

Gotta hand it to him - just crankin' out content.
Timestamp: 43:40 An explanation of the 360 method of evaluation and helpful criticism, mention about difficulty evaluating middle management due to being removed from the end outcome. Interesting. Appreciative of the conversation and learning something new from this.
This is amazing. I have a degree in ECD and in Occupational Therapy. I work with the pediatrics population and between todays parenting and school structure our children are headed for disaster. However this podcast shed hope that these types of schoolscan empower future generations to be the problem solvers of the world while creating highly functional and cooperative cultures that inspire, motivate and create a better world. The Acton Academy sounds amazing and I’d love to be apart of this learning revolution. Wonderful people bringing true light to the future of your children. Love these two men today..insightful, understanding and powerful. And finally people who understand that college today could be a total financial waste of time. As education is important we are not skilling our children up to truly serve within our world today. I feel like we are lost in the get a good job and make good money mentality. But when you do what you love and serve who you feel passionate about serving, true success and monetary rewards will always follow. So many creative ways to turn passions and knowledge into profits and opportunities.

Re: the Socratic method, this is something i've learned relatively recently. When someone comes to me with a problem I stop, listen, and ask questions. It's helped alot!
My daughters 10 months old now, thanks for this video, very helpful!
I used classic literature in comic form when my children were young, and we had audios of the Iliad and Odyssey, Beowulf and the legends of King Arthur which we played for them from age 3 on. This made them intimately familiar with the stories they later read.We still listen to audios. My now grown children gave me the audios of Heradotus, which I listen to before bed.
As usual, brilliant dialogue ❤

Absolutely phenomenal conversation!
I’m on fire! As a teacher of high school/college level in Germany I see so many kids, mostly boys, who are opting out, or at least not living up to their potential, it has been breaking my heart forever. This truly is a revolution and there are no Acton academies in Germany just yet it would seem from the quick research I just did. Good Lord, this is so exciting! Who will join forces to start one?
That's interesting because when I heard the details about German schools, they sounded very good. The Germans are renowned for their practical, vocational training. I admit, I was a bit perturbed that the German system pre selects the academic ability of children at a young age with the Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium system. I also am amazed that even to work in retail store, an employee has to go through years of apprenticeship.
@@fazole that's all true, but it's a far cry from the Acton academy system. I taught a debating club for several years and that was similar - I loved it. The usual lessons are still mostly top down and since schools of 500+ students have a single computer room with internet access you can't even let the students do research on their own very often. My old headmaster used to say, it's a 19th century system - and this Acton academy seems to be the 21st century answer to all the problems. I'm still dumbfounded by the simplicity and beauty of it, even though I don't understand it fully.
You should definitely start one. I am a graduate from the original Acton Academy in Austin, Texas USA and yes-one in Germany would be amazing!
Thank you for allowing me to view this excellent discussion ! My favourite yet ! ( I’m 16 weeks pregnant and looking forward to education and parenthood )

After finishing school and college, I am working at a bullet factory making money to pay off debts, buy essentials, and buy supplies for my hobby/business. I don't exactly love my job but it's a good fit for my autistic mind. I want to do something that fits my skills but I don't know anyone who can take the time to mentor me, besides I haven't been taught how to take risks and how to bounce back from a fall. I hope that more schools like Acton Academy hop up around the world and help kids that are different.

Brilliant conversation. Such a valuable tool to continually ask questions, especially of oneself when making decisions or facing challenges. I have an adhd condition and the part about educational success being exam results resonated with me. Lack of ability in this started a mental process of thinking I was dumb, even though my wife is amazed at my breadth of knowledge. Btw, Lord Acton is buried in Tegernsee in Bavaria which is where I live.
This was an incredible conversation. Thank you Jordan and Jeff for bring to light the issues and solutions of our education system. I’ve shared this post with many family and friends.
