    Bravo Bravo Bravo.! It works, married very happily for 50 years, three children and eight grand children later. All cherished and loved. It’s been a wonderful adventure. This is exactly how God wants society to be formed. Thank you Dr. Peterson.

      @kirktuss4819 Only God knows and it is between Jordan and himself. My eighty decade experience of people leads me to suspect that he withholds public profession so as to allow those he is leading into truth and love will make their way to faith and do so without hero worship motives.

    Some will criticize JP for the message he strives to convey to the world. One thing that can be undoubtably said is that he really means what he says and wants others to strive forward. His passion screams through the videos and conversations that he has. God bless him.

      He might, unless the pressure gets him. My sense is that Peterson does need time and space to focus and think deep, and he would suffer with juggling with politics-necessary tasks, many menial but pertinent. A political leadership position might do a disservice to his deep work, his health, and to us. That's one of the big reasons why signing with DW freed him to do much more and better work, although it inevitably biased him too, as he has admitted.
      He would be a stellar political advisor of any president or PM that would ask his help.

    This was beautiful, brought a tear to my eye. No one else is capable to describe the spirit of things as dr. Peterson. I sensed around me what he is describing in this speech but he puts order and articulates what was just intuited before, and he does this repeatedly.

    That's what is special about Peterson - it is not just about faith but about reality. Peterson is touching upon the core truths of the Universe. He recognizes them and can formulate them because he himself strives to practice them. I hope this message spreads like wildfire. It is the cure for our ills.

    I feel like Peterson accidentally does a Biblical-texts-style refinement of his most deep, dense, astute stories and analyses as he gives similar-themed speeches, which started as lectures, thousands of times, ending up in highly distilled, packed with meaning and clarity segments.
    Some of his phrases will definitely be historically relevant during the next few hundred years, if not longer. Civilization progresses so fast that I'm not sure if we'll be using written and spoken language in a few hundred-thousand years anyway.

    I've also seen that with her intuition, a woman can gently take the lead towards a deeper connection in the relationship. This requires some sacrifice from her part.

    I appreciated his message. Not just with Abraham, but with Adam and Eve they left the Garden of Eden. And then throughout the Old Testament Adam and his people did what to qualify for heavenly help? Made sacrifices.
    A very smart, inspired man once said that a religion that does not (eventually) require the sacrifice of all things will never produce the faith necessary for exaltation.
    Likewise, a life that does not require a great deal of sacrifice produces obituaries that are boring and people who are just plain uninspiring.
    Dr. Peterson, thanks for reminding me that God not only sees my sacrifices, He is overseeing them. ❤

    As I listen to this- I hear a human call to greatness yet the central part is not me- not others I sacrifice for- it begins with God.
    To me, the true amazing thing of Abraham is his acknowledgement and belief in God’s heart of faithfulness- love- mercy.
    He sets out in an adventure- but believing God. His blessings come from trusting Gods goodness and Gods faithfulness to his own promises.
    Abraham’s journey is one of transformation in his knowing God and himself.
    It is not just me…not just others. It begins with God😊

    People today does not know how to be a true and a real, rich and harmonious friend. Its not based on that sacrificial thing where you actually on a deep level care for your friend anymore. Its how we see friends in movies, and shows, but its very few that live it out in real life. People today wants to gain something either from status of being around someone or something else and if they dont get it they move on.

    One small additional comment to my previous praise: Clothing is important because it can send out a message, like the academic cap of a scholar, the habit of a monk, or the headscarf of a Muslim. But clothing can also backfire and make you appear a fanatic or a clown. IMO Jordan P. needs a wardrobe manager.

    As a late starter due to my ideology someone asked me more recently my thoughts and advice on parenting with two strong principled and respectful now young adults in their twenties, SACRIFICE was the answer 100% and myself only in my thirties did I have the knowledge and ability to understand the importance of this reality.

    It is always a pleasure, and very stimulating, to listen to Jordan Peterson.
    This talk opens so many doors, with so many questions!
    How does this primacy of sacrifice articulate itself with the primacy of the individual, often considered to be an attribute of Western Civilization? Is it because the sacrifice is itself individual, freely given and not imposed?
    Is this power of sacrifice really something specific to Western Civilization? After all, the fundamental examples given about attention, time, family and community, seem to also be valid for non-Western societies. For example, how do the Confucian values of Harmony and Sacrifice to the community differ from the Western approach to sacrifice?
    Is this because the Christian sacrifice is seen as in the image of Christ's sacrifice, which is the Sacrifice of the Ultimate innocent, which cleanses all sins and need not be repeated? Or is it because of the individuality and freedom of sacrifice already mentioned?
    And this leads back to the western-ness of the value of sacrifice: is Christ's sacrifice not universal, and thus applicable to all civilizations, and not only the Western one ?
    I guess I will bump René Girard up my reading list.

    He expressed this so well. Deeply inspiring, thanks for sharing this clip. Whatever we sacrifice doesn't just come back to us one for one, but comes back multiplied and in a new form which is far more useful than what we originally sacrificed. Like a seed which contains all future possibility - whether that seed is something we know is hindering us or if it is of great value - it's dropped into the ground unusable in its current form. After the passage of time and seasons (maturation) it comes back to us multiplied as fruit from which both we and others can benefit. From unhelpful to abundant goodness available to all.

    Abraham is a great example of the Christian life. In Ur the God of Glory appeared to him and he obeyed and went somewhere he did not know where; that's the wonderful adventure.
    In 15:1ff God gives Abraham an unconditional covenant, a promise of a nation.
    But in 17:1ff God gives him a conditional covenant, a contract - - obey me and I will make you a mighty man. And that takes sacrifice! Spell it out load Jordan!

    ​​Sacrifice does not mean that you give up something in the hopes of obtaining something of greater value. That's trade, or at most duty. Sacrifice is giving up something of tremendous value (because of your morality, ethics, faith, etc) without expecting anything back. Christ has sacrificed everything, without receiving anything back. Doing things for one's family is not sacrifice, it's basic duty, and normal life. The West is built on duty and fair trade, indeed. But that's not sacrifice, and this is precisely why it's now failing: it always sees everything as a trade, and thinks that's a noble endeavor that represents "sacrifice".

    I don't believe that "sacrifice" or even "martyrdom" which I suppose could be said to be the ultimate sacrifice, are just ideas, based on dogma. I believe it is a tool. Whether you believe in the teachings of a religion or not, sacrifice is present in the stories of many world religions and philosophies (East or West). The concept of "serve others before serving yourself." When we think of an ultimately enlightened entity (God, Prophet, First Cause etc), there is a common concept of the teacher or the shepherd - which implies that humanity is imperfect and flawed and requires guidance. One might suppose then that the religious texts may therefore not be historical accounts of fact. They may be stories that are tools to mitigate human flaws and imperfections. Imperfections like the propensity for materialism, greed, hedonism, the lust for power over others, egocentrism, fear, insecurity etc. Historically, when humanity was not so advanced by technology, these tools were very effective; we didn't know what caused earthquakes or disease or solar flares or death. Humans clung to these tools to explain these things and it was much easier to gather a flock - this is what gave rise to organised religion (in my opinion). But then, the self-elected wielders of those tools, were corrupted by the power that they gave them over the flock and they used humanity's flaws and imperfections to exercise totalitarian control over the flock, whilst sure in the knowledge that they themselves were not flawed or imperfect. And they became very good at wearing sheep's clothing while they did it. So the question in my mind is, who first built these tools and what were their motives for the human race? Were they benevolent? Did they recognise the inherent risks in delegating those tools to human teachers? Are they watching or have they given up? As humanity embraces its newfound technological substitute for those tools, and replaces the fear of the unknown with a collective feeling of superiority over the natural world, can that proportion of humanity (the responsible citizens) find new ways to guide humanity towards a greater good? I think the real question is, what proportion of the human population constitutes responsible citizenry - if it is not the majority (by a wide margin), then guidance through dialectics might not be enough.

    The West?
    I have to say the words Jordan said here are incredibly inspiring!
    But a criticism I have is that I usually hear a lot of people using the term "Western" and are actually talking about Anglo-Civilization or North-Western Europe.
    Is the West falling apart? Is the West the best?
    Well Latin America and Eastern Europe are currently in shambles!
    Southern Europe is not doing well economically!
    How can Canada be part of the West but not Argentina?
    How can Sweden be part of the West but not Poland?
    How can England be part of the West but not Greece? the founder of Western Civilization!
    Hypocrisy! If you want to refer to the rich parts of the West or allies of the USA then just say NATO or Germanic civilization!

    Peterson examples and over simplification reminds me of speaking to kids or elementary school students, however the over complications of the language to give it the philosophical spices of his specialty is not a maturity but is made up of ideas which mostly were not meant by our Deity (God). Life is a test of obedience to God, rather than sacrifice, that is why submission to God is the correct definition of Islam. Look Islam up or just read your bibles again with what I wrote in mind, you find it true.

    Sacrifice is still enacted every day in the homes of most Hindus in India, so I wonder how is that 'sacrifice' different from the historical version of sacrifice of the West (it is rarely practiced in mainstream Western culture now), and why does JBP consider the latter version special?

      There is a hierarchy of sacrifice and there are many cultural practices which enact the idea or concept of sacrifice by offering something of value to self and leaving it behind. C S Lewis talks about the higher being contained in the lower.

    No one voluntary sacrifices anything - sacrifice is only a product of compulsion. To even make a statement that we sacrifice in the HOPE OF GAINING SOMETHING OF GREATER VALUE - exposes absurdity of sacrifice as the human condition - this no different from an investment on wall street.
    I have no idea who he includes under the umbrella of the "WEST", but in no stretch of the imagination can the founding principles of the United States be described as an ideology of self-sacrifice, because the founding principles is an absolute rejection of all forms of compulsion, which is the only circumstance where any human would live to be a resource for another individual - this is the very definition of Slavery
    Does God expect you to sacrifice your life to others? Well have you read the 10 Commandments?
    The Ten Commandments -
    1 - I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me.
    2 - There is only 1 God and he does not walk the earth - No man is your lord (king, ruler...) - no object has authority (cross, crown, scepter, sword..)
    3 - Bow to no man (you will not degrade me by assuming slavery) - to do so will damn you and yours for generations - remain upright and you will find happiness in love
    4 - Do not credit a man as above you - for there is only one lord and he does not walk among you
    5 - Do not neglect peaceful rest or deny others their own peaceful rest
    6 - Respect your parents
    7 - Do not murder
    8 - Do not break your promises or conspire with another to break theirs
    9 - Do not steal
    10 - Do not covet what you have not earned
    Where is the sacrifice? Where is the command to sacrifice yourself to another? Or is it a sacrifice to have honest relationships - and to view all of humanity as equal in station - Where is the sacrifice - well to sacrifice your life to another human is to lift someone above you as though they are a God.
    Sounds an awful lot like this

    So - if he is including the United States in the "West", well he has it all wrong.
    It is a sin to sacrifice or accept a sacrifice - it is commanded that all of humanity are equal in station and to trade fairly and respectfully to never take or accept what you have not earned - in Gods eyes we are equal in station - and commanded to live honestly - and sacrifices are not honest they are immoral, because we were not created to sacrifice to each other, therefore we would sacrifice only as a result of some form of compulsion - such as Jordan Peterson preaching to be good is to make yourself a slave - and despite Gods own commands - the replies are in agreement with the perverse and arrogant interpretation of the will of God is the fundamental condition of Humanity is that of sacrifice.
    If you claim your actions are a sacrifice than you are assuming yourself superior to another human. Also, consider if every wretch on the street is waiting for your sacrifice to him/her - does he not attempt to make you a slave - that you have worked for what you have in honest trade among 2 parties of equal station making an agreement, trading labor for compensation and compensation for labor, while the wretch does nothing but expect you to sacrifice your labor for his benefit? To sacrifice to the wretch on the street you have lowered yourself and raised the wretch creating an inequality of station - in absolute violation of Gods commands - it is a moral sin.
    The first commandment - you are not a slave
    The Second Commandment - you are not a god
    The Golden Rule
    Treat others how you would have them treat you
    So, how do you want to be treated? Do you want to force someone to sacrifice for you - so you will sacrifice for them ... Where does that end? Humanity will be in a state of wretched poverty - reduced to the lowest common denominator.
    Or as Jordan Peterson views Sacrifice - do you want to give a value in the hope of receiving a greater value?
    To Sacrifice your life is slow suicide and to accept the sacrifice of another's life is an act of slow murder.
    Honest Trade, Honest Work, Respect for yourself and fellow humans - as equals in station - not a master and not a slave.
    Gods words are not difficult to understand there are no ambiguities, and the only people who have ever preached the virtue of self-sacrifice are those that want to profit from it.
    I am not suggesting it is wrong to help others, but it if you do so on the idea you are making a sacrifice, than it is a sin. You help by making an honest trade - perhaps their smile is the trade, or to really honor Gods creation allow them the opportunity to provide their labor for compensation, but a fair consensual trade that respects both parties are of equal station - is what God commands - very clearly.

    All due respect to JP but I don't find joy in seeing life as an endless series of sacrifices and compromises because we live in communities. Most people want freedom from these sacrifices to others forced on them and hope new technology will save them. I want to enjoy my life and its achievements not sacrifice it for others. Most people don't have a religious feeling of sacrificing their lives to God like a Christian or Buddhist. imo. PS in my view the parables are spiritual and do not fit into psychological examinations of life.
