How to Build a Modern Geometric Sliding Door

- Hey friends, let's build another sliding door! Last year I shared a modern frosted glass sliding door project I built for my laundry room and this time, I'm sharing a second one--with geometric wood slats--that I build for our guest bathroom.
Before we dive in...I am very aware that while sliding doors are "trendy," they seem to spark mixed feelings among the crowds haha. So if you aren't a fan of sliding doors, I get it. Tune back in next video :)
This bathroom is directly off our guest bedroom and the existing door opened right into the closet door and it just made the entrance feel really cramped. Adding a sliding door here gave this space both floor space and character and I'm excited to show you how it came together.

I love sliding doors. I just did a double slider for my daughters new bedroom.
I bet she loves it!
Good idea to drill one first and use the second hole to guide the drill.
I’ve accidentally drilled holes in wrong places more than once ha! So those are helpful tips I’ve learned the hard way 🤣
hey mistakes happen to all of us I'm just glad you show yours.
Always like to show the mishaps. They happen. If a project went perfectly as planned, it would be pretty boring haha!
The door looks fantastic! The design is really interesting and I like the black and natural wood color. Thanks for sharing this.
Gorgeous build Shara! I love and appreciate when you makers actually show the mistakes and fixes. Keep rocking it.
Thank you! I enjoy sharing the mishaps and the fixes. I feel like projects that go exactly as planned are boring haha. I’m glad you enjoy watching them!
Love the look you chose for the slider. Nicely completed and a beautiful addition to your home.
Thank you so much! It really makes this room feel so much more modern and add so much character 😍
It’s Friday!! I need a few of these. Sliding doors take up less space. I’m here for them.
Same! I love not having to take up floor space with a swinging door 🙌
@@WoodshopDiaries Team No Swing!
That turned out AWESOME......love the design on the door!!! You are so creative and also great at giving tips on different ways to do everything. I was glad to see Lucy make an appearance in this video and looks like the weather has warmed up nicely there. Looking forward to your next build already!
Thank you so much! Lucy needs a little more screen time I think. I’ll have to keep that in mind as I film my next several videos and make sure she makes an appearance or two haha. I hope you enjoy a wonderful week and I really appreciate you watching!
Amazing build turned out great
I love this SO much! I'll be doing your beautiful door in my mud room!
The door is beautiful, Shara. Thanks for the video.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
I really like the Geometric pattern on the sliding door you showed. Very modern and went good with the room.
Glad I got to see Ms. Lucy.
Thanks for sharing Ms. Shara
Thank you! I really wanted to do something more modern vs rustic and I’m so happy with how it turned out in this space. I’m going to have to let Lucy get some more screen time soon haha.
I appreciate you watching and hope you have a great week!
The door looks great. I really liked your comment "please join me for a ride on the struggle bus". When I am in the shop I definitely take that ride. I enjoy your videos and the instruction of your builds. Keep up the awesome job.
Haha forever riding on the struggle bus. I’m glad to hear it’s not just me 😅 I’m so happy to hear you enjoy the videos. I really appreciate you watching!
I love this sliding door!!! Wow, this came out great!!!
Thank you so much! So glad you love it!
Very modern. Nice!
Thank you! Modern is exactly what I was aiming for! 🙌
Shara, I love your door and the change it made to the room is quite dramatic. It looks like you're having a lot of fun customizing your new home to your tastes. Again your artistry is shining through! The weather here has turned to perfect. Over the holiday and the week beyond we have our "grand dog" with us. There will be a lot of ball throwing. Between those ball throwing sessions I'm finishing up my Loft project and putting my garage back into some kind of order. Hope you have a great weekend! Thanks for Sharing!🙃🙂
Thank you! I’m really enjoying customizing each space in our home. It’s a slow process but that’s okay 😊 I’m glad you are having nice weather. Hopefully it stays nice a while before getting into the miserably hot days of summer 🤞 enjoy some time with the grand dog and have a wonderful week!
Excellent work, congrats 👏❤
Thank you so much!
Love it! Another great job!
Thank you so much! 🙌
Brilliant!
Thank you! 🥰
I LOVE your videos!! You are so real!! I am going to try this over the summer! This is beautiful!
You’re so kind. Thank you! I appreciate you watching. Happy building! 🙌😊
That's a beautiful door. Great job!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching!
Im an independent contractor in arizona. I really like your channel, very high quality with perfect edits and sound.
Great shop set up💪
Your designs are so creative. Just love the final result 😍
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching!
Beautiful
Thank you!
Great idea! Didn't see this style yet. Must try , thank you 😊
Happy building! 🙌😊
Super validating. I've been hemming and hawing and building a slider out of 3/4" plywood using this exact technique. Now that I've seen you do it, I have a weekend project to complete... Thanks, Shara!
It worked perfect for this. Super easy to put together and hang as one solid piece 🙌 good luck on your project!
Amazing work, Shara! Fantastic looking door! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you so much! Have a wonderful weekend!
Great job! Your voice is soothing. Your delivery is flawless. And you can't tell about the smaller slats so don't worry about it! Looks amazing.
So glad to hear you shouted the video and the bloopers haha. I appreciate you watching!
I love it Shara! I love the slat look againstv the black stain ❤ Great save on the spacing issue. Problem solving is woodworking 😅
Thanks friend! I love a good black and wood color combo! Also, yes, 100% woodworking and problem solving go hand in hand 😅
This door looks great! I love your made up pattern. 2 very funny parts: Struggle Bus! Lol. We all have that. And second, the black and white transition to door graveyard. Excellent video.
Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed the “horror” segment taking you into my door graveyard 🤣 I debated on leaving that in or taking it out. I’m glad you found it funny. I appreciate you watching and hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Very cool sliding door! The design of the slats are spot on and really looks great. As always Shara, another awesome video. The behind the scene transition shots were fun too watch. Have a great weekend Shara✌🏾
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed some of my behind the scenes shenanigans I left in this video 😅 I appreciate you watching and hope you have a great weekend!
Amazing 😮😮😮😮
Thank you so much!
Love the ride on the struggle bus AND also the "uh oh" bus. The solution you used would have been exactly what I would have done. I really like the look of the door and how you used it. Thanks for the idea and until next time... Saw safe.
Constantly riding the struggle bus with every project. I’m slightly indecisive about everything 🙈🤣 I am happy you enjoyed watching it come together and I appreciate you following along! Have a great weekend!
just beautiful.. Great work its soo soo good.
Thank you so much!
AWESOMEJOB!!!
Absolutely nailed it! (no pun intended). Also, I love how you calmly adapt to your mistakes. Honestly, the project I'm most proud of is also the one where I've made the most mistakes!
I agree…the ones you learn from become the favorites over the years. Thank you so much for watching and happy building!
I really like that idea. Looks greet
Thank you! I had a lot of fun putting this project together!
Great looking door. Can't wait to see your home once you feel it's finished. Be sure to give a tour when that time comes 👍
There is a LOT to do to a lot more spaces before I’d be ready for a tour 😅 maybe a few years from now. But when it time comes, that would be a fun video to make !
@@WoodshopDiaries haha I figured after you said you have to very intentionally end home projects but yeah it would be an awesome way to show off some of the projects over the channel’s history 👌
Great job on the door👍
Thank you so much! 🙌
awesome! we're looking at putting one up over our pantry. and i agree -- there are several doors in my house that i can't stand! they'd be so much better as pocket doors but alas, i'm not going to tear up my walls. barn doors are the next best option.
i also enjoyed watching you build your own door and hope to do that as well. great job!
I hate that pocket doors are such a pain to add in after the fact. You’re right. Sliding doors are the next best option. Maybe not too bad of a second choice haha.
It’s not Saturday morning!! Are you giving us bonus content?! 😂 🤩. (Had to edit to add this). I haven’t even made it more than 10 seconds before you chilling behind the door as it slides open just cracked me up!!
(Okay, time for another edit, because you keep cracking me up, but by about 5:00 in I realized I may actually need to get onto Tik Tok, just to see the behind the scenes, where words are hard, and life isn’t always easy and perfectly pretty!)
With the holiday weekend, I thought I’d try posting a day early. Surprise! 🤣 I really tried to make this a fun video without tooooo much fluff or silliness. I hope you enjoyed 😊
Also, IG is where most of the behind the scenes is posted but I do occasionally post some fun stuff on TikTok as well. Feel free to follow along with all my crazy shenanigans 😅 I appreciate you watching and hope you have an amazing weekend! 😎
Turned out great Shara! 😍👍🏻👊🏻
Thank you! Have a great weekend!
I hung a double barn door. One of the doors in the kit was warpped - it binds on the floor guide. I also found out that you have to be super accurate when hanging the hardware. A bubble level isn't accurate enough. In my case, in 16 ft, 1/16th inch off level allows the door to move, won't stay put. I needed an 8ft level. Those bearings on the hanger are super smooth. Your video has me seriously considering taking my doors down and build new ones like yours using plywood and an overlay. That should take care of the warpage. Then all I have to do is adjust the track up a little bit. If anyone considers buying the complete kit, I wouldn't recommend it due to the warpped door in my ket. Thanks for the video!
Nice door... Well done...
Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching!
Nice!
Wow i love the machines and yhe lady is cool just like the final product
Nice work, I’m about halfway through but I’m gonna catch the rest later!
I appreciate you watching! Hope you enjoy the craziness 😅
Nice work on the sliding door Shara! Thanks for sharing the video with us!😎👍💖JP
Thank you so much for watching! 🙌 have a great week!
@@WoodshopDiaries Your very welcome Shara! Thank you! You to😎
Lol…. I am a big fan of sliding doors!!! This is a great idea and you built a beautiful door! I’ve built 9 from tongue and groove so far and, trust me, there was definitely a learning curve! This one is amazing! I never thought of using plywood. Guess what I’m using next time! Keep on building Shara and have a great weekend!
Wow, 9? You are a fan of sliding doors haha! I bet they look amazing. Plywood works great as a backer for these, especially if you’re adding something neat on the top layer. Plywood is always saving the day around my shop if you haven’t noticed 🤣 I appreciate you watching and hope you have a great weekend!
@@WoodshopDiaries …. ..like you, I’m not a fan of invasive hinged doors!!! Lol… I built 4 sliders for our house and then I built 4 for our mountain house, plus a set of narrow double doors! I built the double set as one door and then after I hung it with all four rollers, I took it back down and ripped it down the middle with my Kreg Rip Cut! Then I rehung it as 2 doors!
czcams.com/users/shortsI3E8ihrNy1w?feature=share
Keep on building Shara! Thanks for all the projects you share!
Looks very nice! When we replaced some doors (going from smooth to 6 panel) Habitat for Humanity came out and picked up the old ones. They were very happy to get them. They said usually the ones they get are damaged, and these were in good shape. Might be an option for your graveyard.
Think if this way, a sliding door is an easy alternative to a pocket door. Sliding/pocket doors free up so much space.
100%. Pocket doors are awesome if they’re installed initially but doing it after the framing and drywall are up is a big ordeal. Sliding doors are an excellent alternative that double as wall decor 😉🙌
That was an awesome build project!
Looks professional and ready for market if you ask me 😀.
As a perfectionist, I definitely understand you, you have to learn to draw the line somewhere or you'll never get finished.
You are so funny, you had me cracking up showing your humor!😅🤣😂🙂🙃😉😊
That's me in a nutshell LOL.
Content creating is serious business, I suck hard at it LOL.
I can do a million things but getting it on camera, "successfully" and then editing it is like pulling teeth LOL.
You have mastered it.
You have natural talent, the wit, the focus coupled with personality and humor.
It's a pleasure to watch, thanks for sharing!
You’re so kind! I appreciate the kind and thoughtful words and compliment…but don’t give me too much credit 😉 I’ve definitely not mastered content creating 🤣 I have definitely improved over time, but still have a long way to go.
I truly appreciate you following along as I learn and figure out what Im doing in the process. I feel like the key to doing anything with a camera is lots of time and lots of practice…it just takes that to be comfortable with your every move being followed by a tripod haha! Im glad to hear you enjoyed the humor I left in this video and I really appreciate you watching. I hope you have an amazing weekend!
@@WoodshopDiaries I know what you mean, humbleness is usually the first sign of true talent :).
That was super funny and entertaining!
The pesky tripod LOL. I usually so involved that I forget it exist until I have finished the project 😅🤣😂🙂🙃😉😊.
You too and God Bless!
Very nice
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
Shara kicking butt. door turned out great.
Haha I don’t know about kicking any butts 🤣 but the job was completed. I’m so happy with how it turned out. I appreciate you watching!
Just saw the transition on Instagram! Came out pretty good, I love the outfit change 😂
Of all the things I thought about with that video I didn’t think to use the same outfit 🤦🏼♀️🤣
J’adore cette porte,très jolie,et très bien réalisée,bravo, à bientôt salut Jeannot ⚒😉
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching and following along!
Amo seus vídeos vc e muito boa no seu trabalho abraço daqui de Salvador Bahia Brasil
You’re so kind. Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
I always like the barn door look. Great job. I'm surprised you didn't keep with the spacer you had for the pieces of wood on the spot that gave you some trouble... its ok we've all done it lol great job I like it.
Thank you! I’m not sure what you mean? But I wish I had thought that through a little better and started from the opposite end so I didn’t have to trim them at all 🙈 live and learn. But I think it’s barely noticeable so at least it wasn’t a major issue 😅 I hope you have a great week and I appreciate you watching!
I love the look of the door, but sliders feel like they give less privacy. I'm all for it on a laundry room though. I'm with you on drawing a line. I once remodeled a whole bathroom because of a toilet paper holder.
Haha home projects are like that book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” One thing leads to another to another and next thing you know, you’re in a full blown remodel 🙈
You should replace the door to the door graveyard with a sliding door. Only then will it be complete... :P
Ahaha it has crossed my mind multiple times 😉🤣
Shara, I have tried to create a way to cover the slide bar and brackets. My wife does not like the looks of the metal bar and brackets. The best I have come up with is a wood cover to cover metal bar and brackets and allow the sliding door to still function but she is not to keen on that either. So if you have any ideas let us know.
I wood box would have been my first thought. Like those kind they put over windows sometimes (I assume) to hide the curtain rod. If she doesn’t like wood, you could paint it to match the wall or cover it in drywall to watch the wall 🤷♀️
I have not tried the drywall idea because getting material for sheetrock, plaster, and surfacing is not one of my capabilities. But your suggestion of drywall is probably the best solution. But my small 12’ x 28’ shop needs the double doors at one end replaced with sliding doors, I have been putting it off one because of expense and two at 76 I am a little on the weak and lazy part of life.
I'm gonna call this one "Theme and Variations on Shara's Slidey Doors and Things." Great save at 8:00 - no one but you and 185K of your internet besties will know 😁 (seriously it looks perfectly fine). Also a nice tip on the caulking - that's a detail that I certainly wouldn't have thought of. The whole project turned out really nice and is a great upgrade for your guest room! P.S. let us know when you're ready for an intervention on your door hoarding behavior... admitting the issue is the first step 🤣
Haha 185k of my internet besties 🤣🤣 you crack me up. I learned the caulking tip the hard way on the last sliding door I installed. Thought I’d be helpful and pass along the tip. My bolts pulled my trim tighter and I had a weird looking caulk blob where it all squeezed out 🤦🏼♀️ live and learn ha!
I may need a professional to help me deal with my hoarding issue 🤣 it’s so easy to forget behind that door…until I remove it too 😉🤣
I don’t know why people don’t like sliding doors, especially if they look like that!👌🏾
Haha thank you! I agree…I love a good sliding door for space savings!
@@WoodshopDiaries You’re welcome! I need to build one for my master bedroom closet. I can’t stand how the door opens into the closet. You have to walk around the door and close yourself in the closet just to get to anything on the left side. #ContractorFail🥴😂
😍😍😍
Very nice! I do want to ask about that lamp in the corner...where did you get it?
I can’t remember. I found it online about 13 years ago. I’ve had it a good while.
Nooooo, not the struggle bus...
Bumpy ride.
The struggle bus is always an adventure 🤣
Have you had any warping of this door? We bought two expensive sliding doors and they have warped over the last year.
Nope this one hasn’t warped. It’s been installed about a year now and it’s just like day one. You can see a more recent video of it in my YT shorts where I recently remodeled the bathroom it leads to.
"I think we're just going to deal with it, and take that as a lesson learned." Man, wasn't expecting to find solid life advice on a video about making doors.
I'm super curious how to make it lock! I'm thinking of doing this for my main bathroom but it needs to lock for guests
I’m sure there are options from a quick google search. I didn’t bother with a lock since it’s just two of us living here and if we need to lock, we can lock the bedroom door since it’s just off the guest bedroom.
@@WoodshopDiariesA hook and loop may work well.
👍🏼❤
How much would a door like this cost to buy?
😯😍😍😍
Ok a few things....number 1 we all know who loves the sliding door.....lol...Hint it starts with S ..... Number 2 yes i did pause the video and went to Instagram, and not bad......lol..... Number 3 most people have skeletons in the closet....Shara has doors.....😂.... But it looks a whole lot better then ours... I can see a project in my future.... Have a great extended weekend...
Ha! I’m glad you headed to IG to check out the final results of the craziness 🤣 and yes, my door closet is getting kind of full. I have plans to remove three more doors right now in my mind and at that point, something will have to give 🙈🤣 I hope you had a great weekend and I really appreciate you watching!
Hey Shara
Hi!!
What do you do if the rail isn't level?
Adjust it until it is. That’s why it’s important to drill the holes along a level line
I love sliding doors but only ones that disapear in the wall.
Loved the door graveyard anf hope that you find a creative way to use them up. Selling/discarding them is just boring 😅
I understand. If a pocket door was an option (without tearing dorm drywall and redoing all the framing) I’d be all about it. Sliding doors are a good alternative. And also double as wall decor haha.
I should brainstorm some ideas to use these. I wish they were solid wood and I could cut them up and use the lumber. One day maybe I’ll think of something practical to do with them.
@@WoodshopDiaries yeah, that is the sad thing. Pocket doors are just soo much work. So your ootion is probably the next best thing to go for 😅
Would love to see those old doors repurposed in a creative way. And usually you have a good eye and mi d for that stuff
Pondering... why could you not have reclaimed those gaps you wanted around 7:50 by using a router?
You could use a router. Table saw. Jig saw Band saw. Lots of options
cutting the 1/8 off is not noticeable.
That’s what I was hoping for!
Sliding doors on a bathroom are controversial because of privacy issues. Some people are uncomfortable going to the bathroom in a room with a door that can not lock.
Understandable but you can add a lock to a sliding door. A simple hook and eye latch on the inside is an easy option.
You are so dang cute. I wish they had women like this in North Carolina
