Randy White Ultimate NFL Career Highlights

  • Nicknamed the "Manster" (half-man, half-monster), Randy White was one of the most intimidating defenders to ever play the game, compiling 7 First-Team All-Pro selections in his illustrious career with the Dallas Cowboys. Despite being undersized compared to other defensive tackles of the era, the ferocity and quickness with which he played made him a virtually unblockable force on the Cowboys "Doomsday Defense" for the better part of a decade, and paved the way for future undersized defenders that relied more on agility than strength alone.

That defense upfront was interesting because after Jethro Pugh retired and the Cowboys traded for John Dutton, they had four defensive ends making up that defensive line. Ed “Too Tall” Jones should be in the hall of fame, as far as I’m concerned. Harvey Martin was unstoppable for a few years at Right End. John Dutton was a stellar DE with the Baltimore Colts before being traded to Dallas, and Randy White was a DE in college. With Martin and Jones already there, White was not going to play DE with Dallas, so they first tried him at LB. When that experiment failed, they moved him to DT and the rest is history. It also shows why Dallas won after they took White over Walter Payton in that draft. They went to go after talent with longevity instead of trying to fill a position. Besides, when they traded to get Tony Dorsett, it gave the Cowboys that final piece that allowed them to win Super Bowl XII and return to the Super Bowl the following year before they began drafting players at positions the Cowboys were weak at instead of the most talented players available, which caused them to allow some incredible talent get away from them. Oddly, they were still able to grab talent at DB with undrafted free agent Everson Walls and then later Bill abated, who I think won the job in preseason because he was like a hitting machine.

If he wasn't double teamed, he got the sack. If he was double teamed, and the QB had to hold the ball more than a second or two, he got the sack. And he came off a lot of triple team blocks for sacks.

I would go to Cowboy games and watch Randy White through my binoculars
NFC East teams would double him or run away from him.
AFC teams were like "we didn't get the memo" He had big games when offenses didn't scem for him

Dude was smaller, but faster and stronger than the dudes he played against. The number of times he gave a few whacks with those mitts and the guys would start playing at arms length are big in his success. Gave him room to maneuver.

Man, every defense in the NFL needs a Randy White type player. Takin em down with one arm, even just a forearm, or a jab (at the ball, of course😉). Even catching Tarkenton! Jaws was a tough little guy tho. Btw, does ol Fran lead all-time in yds behind the line?

Randy White was the #2 pick in the NFL draft, having been traded to the Cowboys by the New York Giants in exchange for QB Craig Morton--meaning the Giants could have had him!!! Dallas was probably sending the Giants thank-you cards for years...
At least the Giants learned from this and didn't trade away Lawrence Taylor, probably one of the best players at his position...

I was fortunate enough to watch his whole career and he was simply great. His equal today would be Aaron Donald. You could see the difference between him and other Linemen (excepting his partner-in-crime, the Beautiful Harvey Martin) because Randy was going all out on every snap. And next to him, Harvey Martin was piling up Sacks, next up was Jethro Pugh, stuffing anything up the middle and on the other end was Ed “Too Tall” Jones. That was the second Doomsday Defense. The first and second were great but to me, they didn’t have our best DE. Because out of all the Defensive players I’ve watched in my lifetime, Charles Haley was the one player who ALWAYS made the BIG Play at the RIGHT Time. And that’s the critical part of being a great player. Being that great player when the game depends on you. And Haley came through like that, time and time again.
