I once met Mr Jones at a Blues Bar in Nashville...(during Homecoming for TSU). No one in the place knew who he was. I walked up to him and said "Hello Mr Jones, I have always been a huge fan of yours". He was surprised that I knew who he was because it was several years after his playing days. He was a very nice gentleman.
Ed Jones played with both Bob Lilly and Troy Aikman, bridging entire eras of Cowboys history. Another great video. Love the clip from the Vikings playoff game.

Ed "Too Tall" Jones was one of my favorite Cowboys players growing up. I can't tell you how many times he not only had a big sack when they needed it, but also knocked down passes and blocked field goals. That play against the Vikings just shows how much of a game disruptor he could be. I always enjoyed watching him play. I have always been a fan of Too Tall Jones. I vividly recall a play he made in probably the early 1980s where the opposing quarterback threw a pass over the line of scrimmage. Ed raised his arm and deflected the pass which popped up in the air. Too Tall then caught the ball making an interception by a defensive lineman. Spectacular!!

Brother! Where did you find those photos? What a fantastic job! You know I got stories. Here's my Too Tall Jones story. It was the winter of 1980. I had just graduated high school that spring, and I was finally old enough to get into clubs. Me and a couple of buddies decided to drive across the metroplex to Dallas and go to a club there that had a reputation for being high end and a bit wild. It was called Papagayo's. While we were there, Ed Jones came in. I had to meet him. Here I am. I'm just a kid out of his element. I walked up to him and I'm sure I said something lame about how much I enjoyed watching him play. I really don't remember what I said. What I do remember is that he took the time to talk to me, at 5'9" I was eye level with his chest, and when he shook my hand, it completely disappeared in his. Your videos take me back. I haven't thought about that night in years. Thanks again!
If any player deserves the Hall of Fame from name recognition and ability it is Ed "Too Tall" Jones. There were games when he was dominant and he always a consistent force for opposing offenses to deal with. Jones was also responsible for the interception defense of the Dallas secondary. Quarterbacks found it most difficult to throw around and over his six-nine frame and considerable "wingspan". He was also a team player bringing a good attitude and likeabilty factor to the team. Top all that off, he was durable and played for years. I wonder, did he ever miss a game due to injury?
Great video. nice touch of having Gladys Knight in the background. Also, great archival footage - really well done; those early black and whites set the scene so well. Phenomenal back story. The Cowboys organization was just miles ahead of everyone in the late 60's and 70's. Brandt was all over everything; him and Schramm stockpiled a ton of picks in the first 5 rounds from 1970-74. The Cowboys had 36 picks in those first five rounds- 11 extra picks. It was like having two extra drafts. That said, they also missed alot when picking early. Only 10-12 of those top five draft picks in those 5 years panned out. One out of three is not great for top five picks. It's not horrible either, but Landry was picky. Ron Jessie, Pete Athas and Tim Kearny were drafted and let go. But having all those picks allowed Dallas to roll the dice more often when picking. Even better, Dallas' drafting luck would change big time in 1975, '76 and '77. Moreover, Brandt's real genius came in his ability to find free agent rookies. In that same time period (70-74), Dallas picked up Cliff Harris, Reggie Rucker, Toni Fritsch, Benny Barnes, Doug Dennison, Drew Pearson, Ron Howard and Duane Carrol. That's two Hall of Famers and five blue chip starters along with 3 solid back ups and a punter. ( A shame they let go of Rucker and Ron Jessie. The wide receiver position was a turnstile from 1971-1973. )
I was just a little guy,a big fan of Too Tall and the cowboys cheerleaders all the way from Chicago since they were always on tv,still have the Super Bowl pennant XII,I picked that up at the Dallas airport…good times👍🏽

Before Oprah [Winfrey] graduated from Tennessee State University, Edward Lee Jones was probably THE most famous Alumni, as he was recruited to school on a basketball scholarship, only to leave the team after two (2) seasons. @@thelogicalcowboy Always grateful to all you bestow to the world, as it is NEVER dull! Was so pleased to view the closing of this video, as long before one Jadeveon Clowney [University of South Carolina] landed that now infamous hit on the Michigan running back, Vincent Smith, in the backfield of the 2013 Outback Bowl, a youngin', like myself, might recall a thunderous explosion which was long before Jadeveon teed off in Florida some 35 years later. That was such a vicious hit dished out in the NFC Championship game back in 1977, as ole Too Tall brought the "Lumber" to the Vikes RB #44, as one could still believe that no day has ever passed in the last 45 years in which Chuck Foreman did not think about the Mack Truck that decleated him in the back field on that late December day game in Texas Stadium!
I was too young to remember him. I didn't get involved with the Cowboys until 92 when I was 8. There is that game where in 85 where he batted a pass from Phil Simms against the Giants that allowed Jim Jeffcoat to intercept the ball and run in for a touchdown to ice the game and the division in 1985. The thing was the Cowboys front 4 especially with Randy White and Harvey Martin along with Too Tall were just beasts between 76 to 82. Sadly Harvey's production fell after 1980 and with his drug use and the line getting older, the other teams adapted eventually after 83. The secondary got exposed which really relied on the pass rush. Too Tall was just as disruptive as Randy White and Harvey Martin in the late 70's and early 80's.
I was a kid looking up too Ed TOO TALL Jones & still looking up to him.& The Doomsday Day defense of the Dallas Cowboys 1970's & still Love those Cowboys.. Good bless Tom Landry's silver linings
Jones is famous for his tippy toeing off balance move in the ( now) neutral zone in the championship game against my Atlanta falcons and ending up doing one of those Foreman tackles in the back field. Knocking the falcons out of the super bowl on 4th and one. The nfl created the neutral zone so this would never happen again because of too tall.
Too Tall is borderline NFL HOF, all things considered. Not sure how #72 isn't at the very least in the Cowboys Ring of Honor. Dude had it all: stats, impact, longevity, Super Bowls, coming up big in Big Games, nickname, etc. I think he deserves it more than Haley. Martin also deserves to be in either.
I loved too tall Jones and Harvey Martin they were awesome 💯 I was 14 years old when I saw the Dallas cowboys Craig Morton captain comeback Mr. Staubach I loved the cowboys passionately
I'd still like to see Tony Tolbert covered as you agreed some time back. He follwed in Jones footsteps and was there a long time. If he wasn't that good he wouldn't have lasted under Landry or Johnson.
Awesome player! I met him at a market I was working at in Nashville (Glengarry Dr and Murfreesboro Rd) many years ago. One evening he drove up in his white Cadillac with the Dallas plate on the front. When he came in I asked if he was Too Tall Jones and he said yes in his deep voice. He bought milk and orange juice. He was very kind and very tall.
Great job as usual. I was surprised that you didn't mention about the year he took off to pursue boxing and then rejoining the team without missing a beat!
Yeah, if I had gone into his boxing career, I figured that I would have had to delve deeper into his playing career, so I left it out. Thanks for watching 🙏
LC, Amazing documentary on Ed "To tall" Jones. The time and effort it took in getting the classic footage, editing and narrating was next level. To tall was a player that made an impact not only in the cowboys but how tall guys where viewed in the NFL. I really enjoyed this presentation. Have an excellent productive week.
One last thing, Romo V Prescott in 2016.... it would be cool to talk about the relationship between Romo and Prescott. There was a lot of drama at that time.
I remember a game where Too Tall kept batting down Joe Theismann's passes at the line. He would just jump up and send the ball right back at Theismann's head. Theismann just looked over at Joe Gibbs and shrugged his shoulders.
I met Mr Jones at Champs in Dallas as a guest on one of the defensive coordinators . beautiful man and my hand looked like baby hand when I shook his hand
I loved when he said he didn't respect the SF 49'ers before the 1981 NFC Championship and Montana throws a TD pass runs over to Jones and says "Respect that you son of a bitch!!"
Ed was a hero to me. I used to be a total cowboys fan and loved watching him with, Harvey Martin, Randy White, and all the other greats. God bless you too tall.
We, my HS team, ran the flex defense and the play that "Too Tall" made on the Vikings, we called a Bandit stunt. It was really one of our bread and butter plays and we were pretty damned good at it. We were undefeated to the state championship and allowed ~8/ game. I played DE and there was nothing better than running a bandit from the weak side and breaking through untouched and sliding down the line of scrimmage, behind the offensive line, tackling the back, with both of you knowing there was nothing he could do about it.
@@thelogicalcowboy Only HS. In the playoffs, I played against a D1 guy (and eventual All-SWC and All-American) and he beat the belief I had that I could play college ball completely out of me. lol
At the 1983 Thousand Oaks camp my cousin and I met Too Tall and we spoke to him for a few minutes and took some pictures. He seemed like a gentle giant, and for a big guy he sure has a small signature when he signs photos. He was my favorite player on defense during that era.
Not only could be knock down passes he gave Phil Simms the worst night of his career on Monday I think and with him and Harvey Martin on the ends there weren't many that could contain both of them
I have always been a big big big fan of Ed too tall Jones that Super Bowl 12 in 1978 was the first Super Bowl I saw as a kid it was the first football game I had seen as a kid and I was hooked from there on. The funny thing is I grew up in Miami and I was a Dallas Cowboys fan boy did I get heat for that?
I got it bad back when I was just 10, I like their name, their star, their coach and my two brothers, Marty had the NY Giants, and the golden boy middle kid Michael and his Green Bay Packers, and last and best my COWBOYS, 60 sixty a Cowboys fan. 4life
I remember watching him play, remember them putting their arms up every time the opponent was passing, they would deflect the ball many times, and ed was the tallest of the group, it was hard to get past him
I remember how disappointed I was when Jones took some time off to box, and how happy I was when he came back. They had an amazing line with Jones, White, and Martin always causing havok for opposing offenses.
Good video! Do a part 2 with all his best plays and sacks!! That game against vikings in 77 i believe the announcer was saying Too tall was dominating Yarry the vikings offensive tackle who is a Hall of Famer i think...
I attended the ‘77 championship game. I was stunned by his size (even from my vantage in the cheap seats) and impact. He was the biggest player on the field….hands down! Great player and fun to watch
in fact I was able to get every single 1985 Dallas Cowboy autograph!! Including Tom Laundry and have pictures with most players too. It was a dream come true! I remember Ed Too Tall Jones in the movie “The Double McGuffin” along Lyle Alzedo!! What was cool was in the one of the two scenes they were in, on the background radio was a sports broadcast saying that the Browns were playing the Cowboys! Only a true sports fan picked that up.
Love the big fella...Saw him in the community during pre-season one afternoon in 1978. He was impressive and vey nice to us.. I am still frustrated of his dalliance with boxing that ultimately cost the Cowboys a birth in SB XIV. As a Ticket holder to that game....I was crushed 'our' Cowboys were no there.
I went to an NFL alumni golf tournament in 1988, as a volunteer score keeper. I saw Ed Jones there, he was easy to pick out. The pro player who I was grouped with had a young son with an autograph book and his father was picking out Pros for him to have sign it. Mr Jones was sitting eating after golf and I watched him sign his book. Mr Jones is a very nice man he put his arm around him and everything . All the players were so cool to this young boy. Sweetness and Ed Jones in the same eye full it was a good day.
A constant focus of the day and the focus most if not all offensive players and coordinators to his credit and to those who played with him, what a defensive player was supposed to be exactly what he was,

😂 😂 thanks again bro!
Actually Wilma Rudolph made her mark at TSU before Oprah and Too Tall Jones....she was a Olympic athlete
@@mickeybell8933
Yep. I believe that's her in the video. They did a movie about her in the 70s.
Great post!!!! That Giants game was legendary!
I was a kid looking up too Ed TOO TALL Jones & still looking up to him.& The Doomsday Day defense of the Dallas Cowboys 1970's & still Love those Cowboys.. Good bless Tom Landry's silver linings
Good point...
" when I was a kid I looked up to him. As an adult I'm still looking up..."
Deep!
Thanks for watching 🙏
Thank you for this channel. I remember watching him play. I was just a kid but realized he was great. I love that guy!! Awesome!!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching 🙏
Ed "Too Tall" Jones and Tony Dorsett are my two favorite Dallas Cowboys.
Both are legendary Players! Thanks for watching 🙏
One of my all time favorite Dallas Cowboys , Ed Too Tall Jones ! Thanks for the Awesome Video !
Appreciate you bro
I loved too tall Jones and Harvey Martin they were awesome 💯 I was 14 years old when I saw the Dallas cowboys Craig Morton captain comeback Mr. Staubach I loved the cowboys passionately
I'd still like to see Tony Tolbert covered as you agreed some time back. He follwed in Jones footsteps and was there a long time. If he wasn't that good he wouldn't have lasted under Landry or Johnson.
Thanks for reminding me bro! I'll definitely get to it in the up coming weeks!
Great Great Story And Great Commentary. Ed "Too Tall" Jones Was A Great Player. This Was A Really Good Video👍🏾💯👍🏾
Appreciate you brother!
Another top-class production. Great work!
Thanks!!
Thanks for sharing.
Appreciate you bro 🙏
The Cowboys of the 1970s and early 80s were my team. Many of the greatest players in NFL history.
One last thing, Romo V Prescott in 2016.... it would be cool to talk about the relationship between Romo and Prescott. There was a lot of drama at that time.
Great idea!!!!
He was an awesome, and persistent defensive player! Thanks, for the video. 👍
I remember a game where Too Tall kept batting down Joe Theismann's passes at the line. He would just jump up and send the ball right back at Theismann's head. Theismann just looked over at Joe Gibbs and shrugged his shoulders.
😂 😂
I’m almost 64 years of age. Have always Ben a cowboy fan since birth. Ed too tall Jones was a real playmaker
Facts
I met Mr Jones at Champs in Dallas as a guest on one of the defensive coordinators . beautiful man and my hand looked like baby hand when I shook his hand
Thanks for sharing 👍
I loved when he said he didn't respect the SF 49'ers before the 1981 NFC Championship and Montana throws a TD pass runs over to Jones and says "Respect that you son of a bitch!!"
Awesome video! Love watching Too Tall play and box as well.
Thanks bro!
I loved to tall Jones. Such an awesome player and one of my favorites!!!
i met Mr. Jones at one of the cowboys camps when i was a kid in the early 80s. very good man.
Thank you for sharing
A tremendous talent and human being. Good memories.
To Tall was one of my favorite players.
Thanks for watching 🙏
Ed was a hero to me. I used to be a total cowboys fan and loved watching him with, Harvey Martin, Randy White, and all the other greats. God bless you too tall.
Bubba Smith is my 2nd cousin on my moms side, He is from Orange Texas but he passed away in 2010, Ed Jones is one of my All time favorite Cowboys
Wow!! Thanks for watching
Fantstic video, LC! Too Tall was one of those special players, a difference maker.
Great video about one of my all-time favorites! Too Tall Jones was something else!!
Thanks for watching 🙏
I grew up watching Too Tall and also Randy White. Those were some great moments.
Wow! Thanks for sharing that! How far did you go in football?
@@thelogicalcowboy Only HS. In the playoffs, I played against a D1 guy (and eventual All-SWC and All-American) and he beat the belief I had that I could play college ball completely out of me. lol

😂 😂 Thanks for sharing bro!
Love this. Thank you bro!
Thanks bro!
Love videos like these. Remembering the old Cowboy teams is awesome.
Appreciate you bro 🙏
He, along with Martin belong in the hall of fame
Yep! I agree!
At the 1983 Thousand Oaks camp my cousin and I met Too Tall and we spoke to him for a few minutes and took some pictures. He seemed like a gentle giant, and for a big guy he sure has a small signature when he signs photos. He was my favorite player on defense during that era.
Wow!! That had to be an experience! Normally they say never meet your heroes. Jones was always a class act.
Awesome video with great information, thanks again!
Thanks for watching 🙏
Not only could be knock down passes he gave Phil Simms the worst night of his career on Monday I think and with him and Harvey Martin on the ends there weren't many that could contain both of them
I have always been a big big big fan of Ed too tall Jones that Super Bowl 12 in 1978 was the first Super Bowl I saw as a kid it was the first football game I had seen as a kid and I was hooked from there on. The funny thing is I grew up in Miami and I was a Dallas Cowboys fan boy did I get heat for that?
Haven't even watched it yet and wanted to say thank you. Next up .. .the Beautiful Harvey Martin!
Thanks bro!
Great content as always keep them coming DC4L too tall way underrated and not talked about enough
Appreciate bro!!
I got it bad back when I was just 10, I like their name, their star, their coach and my two brothers, Marty had the NY Giants, and the golden boy middle kid Michael and his Green Bay Packers, and last and best my COWBOYS, 60 sixty a Cowboys fan. 4life
Thanks for sharing that!
Love Too Tall and your channel man. Excellent video!
Thanks bro 🙏!!!
Thanks for sharing. It's a shame he's not in the HOF.
Appreciate you bro
I remember watching him play, remember them putting their arms up every time the opponent was passing, they would deflect the ball many times, and ed was the tallest of the group, it was hard to get past him
I remember how disappointed I was when Jones took some time off to box, and how happy I was when he came back. They had an amazing line with Jones, White, and Martin always causing havok for opposing offenses.
Legendary defensive line!
Good video! Do a part 2 with all his best plays and sacks!!
That game against vikings in 77 i believe the announcer was saying Too tall was dominating Yarry the vikings offensive tackle who is a Hall of Famer i think...
Good idea!
@@thelogicalcowboy just tell us already TLC your family has connection to cowboys team or apart of cowboys sports frame archives?

I attended the ‘77 championship game. I was stunned by his size (even from my vantage in the cheap seats) and impact. He was the biggest player on the field….hands down! Great player and fun to watch
I remember watching cardinals and cowboys. And TT JONES going against CARDS DAN DIERDORF. TWO GREAT 👍 PLAYERS WHAT MATCHUP TO WATCH.
I met Jones in STL in 1985. I came from KC to watch the Cowboys play the Cardinals on a Monday night game. It was a thrill.
Wow! Thanks for sharing!
in fact I was able to get every single 1985 Dallas Cowboy autograph!!
Great video I’ve always liked Ed
Thanks bro!
Good stuff Bro!! I was a major Cowboys fan back then.
Appreciate it
Great video love it 👍🏻
Appreciate you bro 🙏
Love the big fella...Saw him in the community during pre-season one afternoon in 1978. He was impressive and vey nice to us.. I am still frustrated of his dalliance with boxing that ultimately cost the Cowboys a birth in SB XIV. As a Ticket holder to that game....I was crushed 'our' Cowboys were no there.
Wow!!! Thanks for watching 🙏
Wow! Thanks for sharing!!
That brother had awesome talent.
He sure did.
Thank you ❤😂
You're welcome 🙏
A constant focus of the day and the focus most if not all offensive players and coordinators to his credit and to those who played with him, what a defensive player was supposed to be exactly what he was,
Good post
