How to Build a [Contemporary Style] Outdoor Pet House

- In this video, I'm sharing this easy to build DIY outdoor pet house you can make with just a few basic tools!

Some notes about the build:
You can use treated/exterior grade lumber for this project if you'd like. I used untreated lumber and was careful to cover all surfaces with an exterior finish to protect it. That should help it to last several years.
The deck on this project is optional and you can easily adjust sizes as needed. This house should fit a small-medium sized dog and most cats.

We have three and the two girls are pretty chill but our orange boy is our wild child. He’s full of personality 😂😂
We have your cat's twin. I wish i could show you a picture on here. He is 24lb gold cat with the same markings, size and build as yours he is a bundle of loving joy. I just hope he does not watch this video then he will want his own house. Great job!

Contemporary styled and surrounded by green
So no wonder their paws, no more will they roam
As so proudly they'll stand, within her new home

I really admire the efficiency of your creations! You always seem to maximize the use of materials. This is a beautiful “cat house”! Lol... you did a great job! Also, the platform is a game changer, especially for dogs! You could even just fill in an old pallet for this to use up some scrap. I only wish I had thought of the platform years ago! Thanks so much!! The cats like to sunbathe on the deck on the old dog house so I figured they needed one with their new house. Plus keeps it a little dryer during rains. That’s also a great idea to use an pallet for that if you’ve got one!

Wow, look at all the kreg guides you use. ripcut, accucut.. straight edge. You have skills. How the heck did you keep the accu-cut from moving. I didn't see any clamping
Hi! The accucut is designed to not require clamping. It’s got a “grippy” strip on the bottom that works really well

Completely unrelated question - I’m asking many youtubers - (and I want viewer input too!) what depth drawers do you find most useful in your shop? I’m building a base for my tool chests and am trying to decide between more 2 and 3 inch drawers or a 5 or 6 inch drawer in the mix. I have 26 inches to divide into drawers into. (24 inches wide)
I’ll be honest, I’ve never thought about it. If it fits, great, and if not, I find somewhere else to store it 😂 I’d prefer a mix of both shallow drawers (for wrenches, saw blades, thinner items) and deeper ones for tools.
I would like to do this project but for a medium dog what would be the measures thank you.

Put cat nip or cat grass in the hanging pot, they'll stick around for sure.

Shara, I love all your projects and knowledge. I’m building a house for my puppy; I have tons of scrap wood that’s not pressure treated and need to seal the entire thing including the bottom base to make it waterproof and weatherproof as we live in upstate NY. What sealant do you recommend?
Thank you! I’m not sure if it’s different for your location vs mine, but I’d recommend sealing all surfaces of the wood you’re using with an outdoor paint or sealant. Paint will probably seal better than an outdoor stain. It will also help to set the base up on some pavers or thin concrete blocks to prevent it from sitting in puddles of water.
Even if the wood is not pressure treated, the paint would be enough? Which paint or sealant do you recommend?
Yes if you keep all surfaces covered, paint will seal it from moisture and it’ll last a long time. That’s what I did here. I didn’t use pressure treated and just painted it 👍 make sure the paint is made for exterior use. I recommend Sherwin Williams paint.

AccuCut? I use mine ALL the time. You can check out almost any video and see me using it. Personally, I love it. I have a video about it as well from last year if you want to check it out 👍

Hi, i built a desk and painted it and put on a coat of poly but now it feels sticky. What can i do?
It depends on what kind of paint and poly you used. I’m recommend sanding it down and reapply the poly making sure to stir well and follow the instructions on the can.
