Right, and they even plug for additional help learning how to defeat locks at the end.
But the thing is, you would have to own a 3d printer and those things are expensive. It would be less expensive to just read the key itself, and take one of those $1 keys and just make your own. Then at that point you have your own real key not just a plastic thing you get questions about.

After watching LPL, I'm not super impressed that he printed a working key for a Master lock. With a little practice, you can open a Master with a sneeze.
yep, after watching many video's i decided to get into lock picking. A coworker gave me his cheap set, I was able to unlock 3 4-pin locks at work ( just locks we use for lock-out tag-out, and my locker lock) and that was it. a couple weeks later a friend had driven back into town to get the rest of her stuff out of her apartment. when she got there she realized she forgot her key. Instead of driving for a couple hours to get it I decided to try and pick it, with extremely novice skills. I had her deadbolt unlocked in 20 seconds. Had to pick it again to lock it and it only took 10 seconds. Sad how easy it was lol.
Yeah, but this a video NOT on lock picking. This is a video on key making.
If you watch Lockpickinglawyer you shouldn't be here it was a mistake coming here omg!

I've been a locksmith for 16 years. most standard keys are easily sight read(meaning I don't need to run any special program). I constantly warn people on my Facebook friends list not to post pictures of their keys when purchasing a new car or house or anything. someone with experience can read the key and hand file a working key within seconds with nothing more than a file and a blank.

Back when I used to be a tweaker, we did things kind of like this. One of my friends make a copy of my house key with a Dremel... But then, using his method, I found a safe in a dumpster and someone had broken the key off in it. I fished the half key out and traced it on a thin piece of metal and used a Dremel to cut the metal, duplicate the key, and got the safe open.. Sadly, there was nothing in it but I use that safe now and the key that I made for it works perfectly.

"Theoretically, if we /were/ criminals"
This show in a nutshell.
Between the Lock Picking Tutorials and 3D Printing Keys, this is a scary reality of how unsafe people and their belongings are!
Quicker to just use bolt cutter or a portable angle grinder on a lock, or just kick in someones front door, or smash their windows to get in their house.
rdizzy1 Overt versus covert. A smash-and-grab is faster if you either are indiscriminate in what you're after, or if you KNOW that what you're after IS there. A faked key is smarter if you either are looking for something that MIGHT be there, or are planting something on the premises and need a clean entry and exit.
The uses of a counterfeit key are only limited by your own cunning, but they lend themselves rather well to a bigger picture. I'd be surprised if they didn't become relatively common as political tools in the next decade or so.
In America most door locks are standardized anyway, which means it's a great country to learn lockpicking in if you're a criminal. ...Or aspire to be a locksmith.
90% of Security is really just Security Theater (where the audience is the thief in question). There are 6 billion people on the planet a thief could rob. You don't have to have thief-proof security, your security just needs to be more difficult to B&E than the other guy down the street. A key sheath is a bit much, unless you live in a nice neighborhood. Motion-activated sensors (or even just the signs that say you have motion-activated cameras. The thief doesn't know if you're lying, and can't afford to gamble on it), locking your windows, and if you can swing it having a nosy neighbor or neighborhood watch, are all it really takes to deter thieves: they'll go find someone else to rob.
Locks have always only kept honest people out.

Martin Hofmann or take it to someplace like a Walmart that has one of those self service duplicate key vending machines at their entrance?
Martin Hofmann you could just make a new plastic copy of your car key with a picture then turn around and have a new car key re cut without the original keys,
But lock smiths can get you blue prints for free on cars and that's just going a little far unless you've got a picture of your keys and a 3D printer on hand then it'd be a total life saver, I'd take pictures of all my keys
or you know... normal printing... (though that's admittedly less fun)
I've heard of people doing this.
Now I can break in ur apartment
Fancy seeing you here
I love how whenever Brian holds the key like a magician would. It's so ingrained in him that he naturally just holds things like he's going to do sleight of hand with it.
Pro tip. Quickly dip the printed key in acetone to bind the layers together and require less trimming. It may just act like a well worn key.
another "problem" imo, of the kwikset (and to a lesser degree, the schlage) is that theres also the random chance that someone will have the same key by dumb luck. the kw1 has 6 depth steps (some of the newer "high security" have a 7th) and 5 pins, which is 6 to the 5th power, or 46, 656 possible combinations, however there is also a maximum adjacent step parameter. meaning a #6 next to a #1 would not work, as the pin would not be able to bump up the step and would jam the key in the lock (or out of the lock) without my manual in front of me, i think it is a max of 3, witch also considerably cuts down on the possible combinations (im not doing that math on that one) but even at 46k combinations, when you consider that there are MILLIONS of them out in the wild, thats a lot of locks with the exact same key. i custom pin and key my own locks to non-standard steps, so NO ONE has that same key by accident.
i'm sure a thief will stand there an try 10k+ key's to get into your house >< So long as there is a decent total number of possible combination's it really isn't much of a security issue. Considering how well bump key's work, or raking on most cheap locks...that's a far bigger concern
youd be surprised. i have a ring of about 100 for lockouts and can open a lock about 40% of the time. bumping and raking are easily mitigated with a few spool pins.
the simplest step you can take, apart from rekeying your locks, is to just have a restricted profile installed. C4 profile keysways are much larger than needed to fit a pick gun into, along with Gainsborough and Schlage. 3 or 4 clicks is usually all it takes me.
get a cheap restricted profile from a locksmith and you can stay reassured that much less people will have access to those profile keyblanks, and even fewer will know what profile keyway they're looking at.
What he said ^

That's pretty cool, I've learned working in hardware stores that I come across 2 of the the same or similar keys at least once a week, if you keep your miss cuts it's really cool to hang on too and see how many times you've cut the same key!
For a channel named “modern rogue” they’re pretty Lawful Good
this is masterlock, you dont need a key :D
????????
And the training locks they show are all standard pins.
A Master Lock #3 and a training rig with a kwikset in it are not really challenging targets.
Next test: Dimple lock with a laser-edge on the back-side.
And all their "amazing" ideas for impressioning (like pressing into your arm) is all ripped directly from a few years old defcon video (including using automatic software to steal key bittings).
Yep, i used to pick locks to get into abandoned places for urban exploration, and almost every master lock I was able to pick.
It's been proven you can open master locks with a straw from a drink cup, a wooden stick, and a severed end of a zip tie. They're not very secure "locks".
bosnianbill is a good youtube channel for lock enthusiasts but I'm sure you all already knew that. Anyway this video was crap. They attacked some really simple locks, took forever, and basically proved that 3D printing a key is far less effective than just learning how to pick it. Also all the awkward small talk is really irritating.

Anya! Honestly, their advice isn't that good. You could make keys from photos long before 3D printers were available, you just need to know how to decode the bitting (way simpler than it sounds).
Despite that I still love this channel and I'd recommend it to basically everybody, if only so they take security more seriously.

Here's the neat thing about keys. They use standardized positions for everything. There are specific places the teeth have to be, and only 7 or 8 heights the teeth can come in (for most brands). So theoretically you could just make a CAD file that has all the different heights for each tooth on different layers. You look at a picture and you could pretty reliably guess what position. I know locksmiths who can code and duplicate a key by sight. Imagine looking at a key and just thinking "Thats a five pin schlage 53462." And just going back to your cutter, getting out your guide keys, and cutting one. Like that would 100% be a spy skill.

3d printing car keys and trying to drive ????
Car keys have electronics in them.
mine has a chip that wont turn on the car unless its my specific key
You can start a car with that but it won't drive since all modern cars have a chip in it programmed to your specific car. Without that chip you're not going anywhere
most cars since 1999 have transponders in the key head that works on the same principle as an immobiliser. motorcycles also will have a transponder above a certain engine size. you'll still be able to unlock the doors and boot, but you won't be able to start the car for very long. you can however disable the steering lock and roll it away in neutral.
You'd still need to figure out how to add the anti-theft resistor and one that has the right value. Tilting a key in the light, and you'll see a dimple in the stamping and would need to probe on opposite sides there.
I love how the guy opens his knife trying to act cool but he isn’t even noticed.

Just a little info (as someone who does a little locksmithing in my job)-
1. It is not the ridges, but actually the groves on the blade of key that work the pins and are important
2. How much tolerance you can work with in the groves is highly subjective to the lock and model
3. If you were to file down a key by hand, based on a photo, you would have little or no chance of actually having it work.
I remember doing this in high school on my old Printrbot Simple wood. It's impressive how not complicated it is.

Most key cutting is done by eye. You have the original key beside your key to be cut and visually reference it. You could cut a key without an original if you are good at cutting keys and can remember the notch pattern. An old guy who does the key cutting at my local lumber and hardware store looks at a key once or twice and cuts it. He’s amazing.

Nitro_Dubs An actual key makes it look like you're supposed to be there though.
Aren't some locks prettymuch un-pickable ?
Like the ones that use these cylinder-shaped keys instead of normal keys.
Those locks are actually *easier* to pick, they just require a slightly different method. Just look up the tutorials here on YT.
No, look up tubular lockpicks. Most of them are actually easier to pick because they rely on the shape to help guard them, rather then making the pins better.
There's actually some of them that can be picked with a Bic pen because of the way they're laid out.
This is terrifying
My step dad is s locksmith and has made keys by just looking at the key laying on the seat or in the ignition (mostly older vehicles with separate door and ignition keys). Cheap kwikset locks, if I remember right, only have 5 different lengths of pins. He can also make a key just by inserting a blank wiggling it back and forth then filing where the marks are left on the key.
