CNC ROUTER BUILD | EPISODE 1| ELECTRONICS

  • In this video I embark upon the journey of building a CNC router machine. My goal is to use the machine to design and build kiteboards, surboards, and other similar products.

    And I'm using Mach4 software to run the machine.
    I started by buying and assembling the electronic components of the CNC machine. This is supposed to be the most daunting task in the process of building a CNC machine. It took me 2 weeks of tinkering around with the electronics to get the motors spinning and all the emergency stop equipment working correctly.

    Dude, all i wanted was to know a brief overview of the electronic parts and how they go together. I searched and searched only to find endless tedious descriptions of what they all do. Finally, i found your explanation. Within 3 minutes i got exactly what I was looking with the briefest breakdown. Thanks! Awesome!

      Hey Greg, I can't remember the exact model of the case, but it's just one of the cheapest Corsair PC cases I could find. I found the PC cases were much cheaper than an electronics box. You just have to remove all the mounts and extra pieces inside the case to make room for the cnc components.

      I use a 2.2KW / 24000 RPM spindle that I ordered off amazon.

    great work pal,. i guess is you had to program the motherboard (controller ) or something like that in order to use mach4

      The controller I bought was designed to be used with Mach4. I just had to plug the wires into the correct places pretty much. There was also a plugin for the controller that I had to install into Mach4 as well. No real programming, just selecting which motor goes where, how fast I want it to move, etc. The instructions for the controller were quite easy to follow.

      Not while assembling the electronics, but yes, I have one strapped to the wall right in the shipping container where the machine now resides.

    How do you wire 12v led power switches to power the power supplies?

      The 24V power supply uses a large 110/220V on/off switch like you find on most shop machines, it just draws power from the wall. The 48V power supply is also connected to the wall power, but in order to turn it on, I have 2 contactors which need to be engaged. The contactors are powered by the 24V power supply, via the LED buttons (24V, not 12). When the button is pressed, it engages the contactor and connects 110/220V to the 48V power supply. The LED switches are only under a 24V load.

      Hey Asif, it really depends on the electronics you choose as they are all wired and programmed slightly different. However most of the components seem to come with decent instructions on where to connect the wires.
      I found there was not very much clear info out there on CNC electronics. Probably because each setup is different. So I made this video to try and help people figure out what components you actually need, and what connects to what. Once you understand the jist of it, the finer details can be found in the instructions of each component.

    why you need 2 power supplies ?

      The motors require a different voltage than the other electronics. The higher voltage power supply is for the motors, the lower voltage power supply is for the other electronics.
