    These videos are cool, they've only just been 'suggested' to me recently but it's great to see the bar raised for the 'reacts' videos. This is what I enjoy seeing, a person 'reacting' and explaining why something is so good with musical and technical insight. I was asked to do a video taking a look at a guitarist called 'Mrs. Smith' a while ago, I pointed out to my subscribers not to let her ability fly under the radar! It's great there's now a platform for people to appreciate your talents in an alternative way, I hope more and more people find your channel here :) (Edit: I was typing too fast and made lots of mistakes!)

    The look on your face and body language during his solo is what we all do, lol. To me, every solo by Trucks is like an amazing journey, his solos are structured so well to start mellow and then soar to towering heights. It's not even about the notes he's playing at that point - we all as guitarist could play the same notes he's playing, but we could not put the level of emotion and depth he puts in it.

  • @eddie3064
    @eddie3064 Před 4 lety +52

    I've been lucky enough to have seen Derek since he was just 15 years old. Anybody who saw him back then knew he was destined for greatness. He already had the lineage...he is afterall Butch Truck's nephew, one of the founding members of the Allman Brothers Band, but Derek always had this unique marurity about him that was so noticeable even at an early age. I mean this dude was playing Miles Davis, Coltrane, Sun Ra and Willie Dixon like it was second nature before he was old enough to drive. Seriously, who plays complicated trumpet and sax riffs on slide guitar with that kind of authority and perfect intonation? Only Derek, that's who. I could listen to him play all day long...and have. Also, Derek's tone is instantly recognizable. It's woody, it's organic and it's pure. No delay pedals, no chorus, no overdrive, no nothing to interrupt that purity. Just an SG, a guitar cord and Derek's hands...that's it. Derek has a unique connection to his instrument that only great ones have...like Stevie Ray, Hendrix, Duane Allman and maybe a handful of others. Between his solo bands and the Allman Brothers, I have seen Derek probably 50 times on stage over the past 20 plus years, and he always leaves my jaw on the floor. When he is at the peak of his solos, there is nothing like it. Open your mind to Derek and your heart will follow.
    Anyway, great video and nice breakdown. Time to pick up my guitar and play along as well. By the way, to the other guitar players out there who may not know, Derek is 99% of the time playing in open E which can make it a bit difficult to play along in standard tuning...
    Enjoy...

    I was at this concert - Crossroads 2010 Chicago. It was the first time I heard Tedeschi Trucks. I had never even heard of them at the time. They were absolutely one of the highlights of star studded show. This performance transcended music and went into the spiritual realm. Listening to it now still makes my head explode! Derrick can make each note sing in a way that most players can only dream of. If you want a good laugh watch the video of him sitting and playing with John Mayer and BB King where King gives him the highest compliment a player can receive. He's just that good.

    The bass lines are so beautiful & carry the song. I've met Derrick, my oldest half brother was a roadie for the Allman bros from 71-74. He told me he plays in standard tuning not open tuning. He also told me he learned a lot of his playing from the players from India. Even his bass player plays lines from Indian music. That keyboard/organ player died a couple of years ago. They are the best soulful blues band out right now.

    Back when I was working, I noticed that, at meetings, whenever I would take a big breath, all eyes would turn to me, as if I was going to say something important, even if I wasn't planning to. The breath was kind of the marker of "something about to come", perhaps because big breaths are required as a precursor to saying something important that's more than just a few words.
    Trucks does a very similar sort of thing in his playing. Pay close attention and you'll see that he does this thing where he slides up from the first fret to the note he's aiming for, way up the fingerboard. He's going to play single-note runs on the unwound strings, but that slide up the neck is along the *wound* strings, and *sounds* like a deep breath. Obviously, he knows how to damp unused strings - one of the reasons why he puts his slide on his ring finger - yet he lets the "running start" from the nut up to the sought note slide all the wound strings without any damping. It's his "big inhale". He has basically ported a vocal style over to guitar, and it works SOOOO well. It makes whatever the next thing he's going to play seem really important. Brilliant.

    Derek Trucks is a mad scientist. Not even human. I mean that in the best possible way. I don't think anyone can do DT, nobody. He is unto himself. Freak of nature. Probably the best in the world at what he does. AND is a really nice guy. Humble.

    I'm so glad you did this one. I've been saying exactly the same thing about DT since I saw him with the ABB many years ago, at the Paramount in Oakland. Early on that night I found myself mesmerized by his playing, and quickly told my brothers and bro-in-law, "Watch Derek Trucks!" He was stealing the show while only playing rhythm, and demurring to Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes. I recall he got one solo, and absolutely established himself as the best player on the stage, and I LOVE DB's playing. Love it!
    That being said, when this video came out I had to also say that he's also established himself as the most unique, creative slide player. I don't think there is a single borrowed, Bonnie Raitt style heard-it-before lick in the entire song. That night, that band, that groove, that song, is truly an alignment of the musical stars. That's what ST is saying/reacting to in those couple of moments where she turns around to look at the other players..."Can you believe this? Are you hearing what's happening here?!"
