  • Season 5 of House of Cards! Alright, you know what this show is about. No real need for a description here. So enjoy this 10-minute video of me talking about the season and let me know what you thought about it! I mean season 5 of House of Cards, not the video, I mean you can also let me know what you thought about the video. I'm pretty sure that House of Cards is now officially the show I've done the most videos about.

    Two quick points:
    1. You might notice that most of this video is about the things I didn't like about this season, that's mostly because I have already done 4 other videos talking about the things I like about the show. It's a good show and I like it, I just thought it would be more interesting to talk about the less positive things this time around.
    2. I got some questions about the TV TIME thing and I wanted to clear it up, I'm not sponsored by them in any way. I'm doing Binge Watchers for fun and I'm not at all at a point where I would feel comfortable to take on sponsors, start a Patreon, or generally monetize this channel in any way other than the few bucks I make from ads here. I just really like the TV TIME app, I think they're a cool company, and I think we can have a fun conversation there. I would love to work with them in the future, but right now doing any type of paid promotion feels weird.
    3rd bonus point, I really appreciate all of you who watch these videos and participate in these discussions, it's so much fun. Thank you so much.

    [SPOILERS}
    I felt like this season was less realistic, than the previous ones, like how the election turned out, how Tom and Lean die, this season had to many overused tv tropes in my opinion. I also thought they the overused Frank looking to the camera thing, in other seasons it felt like something special, here it just felt like, yet another time he did it. love the Claire betrayal though.

    • @BingeWatchers
      @BingeWatchers  Před 7 lety +4

      I agree about them overusing Frank's fourth wall breaking. In other seasons they make you wait for it, and it makes it so much more fun when he does it.

      Binge Watchers I didn't quite understand why Lean was killed and by whom, possibly Understood? She was going to tell something or give something to Doug when she was crashed but what exactly? I liked the first second and third ..pure Politics. The fourth was rubbish and fifth pathetic..trying to resemble the reality but losing its own thrill

    I used to admire the meticulous yet subtle planning and smug intellect of Frank and the mysterious and unpredictable nature of Claire. What happened? Frank has become way too obnoxious, fumbling over lose-ends and Claire has lost her calculate self, reduced to another power-hungry character.. I don't recognize them anymore which is unfortunate since Season 4 reinforced them as a power couple.. What happened?

  • @MrSquaky
    @MrSquaky Před 6 lety +7

    SPOILERS: There was waayyyy too many cop outs this season. Like really? Pushing Durant down the stairs in the middle of the White House and NOBODY notices along with zero cameras catching this? What happens when she wakes up? Oh guess what, writers never address that. The VP killing a supposed world famous author and nobody notices? His death is just ignored to conveniently let Claire take over the office without loose ends? And if Frank really was his own leak and organizing his own downfall then why did he push Durant down the steps? Why was he spying on everyone close to "find the leak", why was he so concerned and angry the Hammerschmidt investigation, and then re-feeding them evidence anyway? Just horrible writing.

    Really great vid! I totally agree with everything you said, expect maybe that I did enjoy the Tom/Claire plot line a bit more than you did.
    That being said, I just thought of something and told myself I should put it out there: what if the scene where Frank is explaining his master plan to Claire and the way it doesn't really sound that much like a master plan and rather like a crazy ramble of someone who's lost touch with reality is actually meant to sound that way? I really disliked that scene too, but it just hit me now that maybe it's meant to be watched on another level. What if the show is actually trying to tell us that after all the crazy stuff that Frank has done to get to where he is and reach ultimate power, it has, in truth, made him lose his mind, touch and footing? He now has - if not crazy - very unrealistic expectations as to where real power is, and seems to be on an ultimate doomed quest for more of something he can't have. It would fit with the show's agenda of showing the ultimate kinds of political corruption and it would actually be interesting to contrast Claire's realism with Frank's delusions. Maybe I'm reaching too far in this, but I don't know, it's just a thought.

    • @elm951

      This kind of makes sense. Frank doesn't usually show his frustration and anger. He is always in control of the situation when it comes to gaining or maintaining his power. Maybe as President the methods, he used as House Whip isn't as effective since he has to be a leader, not a bully.

    After just finishing this season I still absolutely love the show but I personally think that it is time for the show to come to a close next season. The show is still excellent however if it keeps going the show will get worse and I think with the storylines coming to a close we need 2 things from next season.
    1. Closure to plot lines like Doug's fate and the Chinese and Russian storyline as well as closure to the main storyline.
    2. A shorter season. Many may disagree with me but I think the usual 13 episodes would drag the storylines along and require more filler. A 8-10 episode season rather than 13 would be better since they could wrap up the storylines by its end without filler.
    Overall I still love the show but I think that it's time for it to go and leave on a high note!

    Great review, agreed with almost everything you raised and glad someone feels the same slightly let down feeling I did, although I enjoyed the season mostly. Although I did like toms death and Elysian Fields.
    I felt this season dragged, focused too much on side characters instead of Frank and Claire. Although robin wright is great I feel Claire was not given enough to make her a likeable character to make me route for her, and I didn't like the fact the entire show has been about frank wanting to be president, and then when he finally gets it he decides to give it away in the space of one episode, declaring their is more power in the private sector. Agree with you that the focus is too much on the race, and barely get to see frank tackling presidential issues, and the terror plot was almost non existent. One of my favourite parts of the season is we frank stumbles his words during his soliloquy by the fire, and it made me realise he's probably not being honest with us, he's almost performing to us and showing off, and we accidently see the true Frank under the armour for a moment.

  • @alexcross5
    @alexcross5 Před 7 lety +1

    This season was a weird beast. It mostly felt like a slog, yet, like other HOC seasons, I found myself watching 5 or more episodes at a time. Although this season had some great moments, there's a lot to dislike. Tom just kind of sulks around the Whitehouse and delivers cringey romantic dialogue in his monotone voice. Tom and Claire's relationship really adds nothing to the plot and just drags on for pretty much the whole season. Jane Davis just kind of shows up randomly half way through the season and apparently has about as much power as anyone else in the room. After one article that was supposedly going to end the Underwoods (I think Frank even said something like "I don't know if we can recover from this" last season), he's slowly (and I mean SLOWLY) gathering more information on the Underwoods' nefarious history. This storyline would have been cool if it didn't feel like such a rehash of the previous season. And it never seems to amount to much, so there's that. The writers drag out the election between Conway and Underwood for about 6-7 episodes. Again this would have been much cooler if we hadn't already got 6 episodes of the election storyline last season. Again, it feels like a rehash.
    But where the series really lost me is in its growing implausibility. In season 1 and 2, when Frank was making shady backroom deals and intentionally sabotaging the presidency, I could believe it. It still felt tethered to reality. However, it feels like the writers keep trying to up the ante, and some parts of season 5 were so unrealistic and implausible that it took me out of it. Somehow, Frank and Claire are able to orchestrate some outlandish scheme where they fabricate the threat of terrorism, infiltrate the NSA, use the National Guard to suppress votes, and eventually send the country into such disarray that the November election is declared invalid. I know it's just a show, but their plan is so intricate and encompassing and built on so many lies and felonies that I'm having trouble believing any political administration could successfully orchestrateI a scheme half this complex and pull it off.
    And then later in the season more crazy things happen. Apparently the Underwoods can pretty much kill their enemies with impunity. Claire kills Tom Yates, a somewhat well known writer and a former presidential speech writer, with poison and no one seems to notice. Frank visits some cult that houses the most powerful men in the world. The White House gets bugged (and everyone knows it), yet people still discuss all the nefarious things they've done. It is revelaed at the end of the season that Frank in fact planned all of the White House leaks so he would have reason to step down and let Claire become president. I don't know if it's just me, but I think their were much less convoluted ways to reach the same outcome. And Frank just seems to forget the whole "I won't just be a blip in the history of Presidents." and all that stuff about him leaving a legacy people will remember. Other head scratching things happen, but I'm too tired to get into it right now.
    At this point in the show, I still enjoy it, but I think this house of cards is in danger of collapsing.

    I agree with you that the conversation where Frank reveals his "master plan" to Claire was disappointing. The thing that I have loved about House of Cards so far is that we are always involved, always in the loop with Frank, and this season changed that. Also, I have always rooted for and seen Frank as the main character of the show, so having Claire end up with the 'power' at the end of this season was eh... However it should set it up for a good next season when he kills her... or at least takes the power back... Side note, great video! Loved it as always.

  • @oDiiJei
    @oDiiJei Před 7 lety +1

    I thought this was a decent season but I had my gripes as well.
    - The "masterplan" of Francis? Yeah I wasn't buying it. I actually thought that he was just lying to her. Idk I could be wrong. If I am then that's pretty silly.
    - I hated the pacing for the most part. It took, I believe, nine episodes to finally get done with the election. That was exhausting. I understand that they were trying to mirror much of reality with our previous election. So perhaps they were attempting to have the viewer feel the same, but I was growing impatient and was dying for the plot to progress pass the election.
    -You were spot on about the deaths. Leann and Tom's deaths were lackluster. Leann's more so than Tom's. What's worse is that Leann dies offscreen. I thought that was a bad choice, or perhaps they left that open for her survival (that is unless I missed something)...
    - I also thought that it was weird contrasts in motivation with Doug's character. One moment he was pissed that Frank questioned his loyalty and the next Doug is willing to take responsibility for all of The Underwood's dirty laundry. That blew my mind in a not so good way. In a sort of "difficult to suspend disbelief" way, after seeing him react to Frank's questioning of loyalty.
    Overall I still enjoyed the season but not as much as I have previous seasons. I felt myself becoming restless in the first half of this season with the aforementioned pacing. However I'm fully committed to this show and still look forward to next season.
