Here in Australia, we don't do tips, we just pay people decent wages. But when I was about 12, I got a haircut from a literal ninja. Dude was duel wielding scissors like a boss! The haircut was $20 and I gave him a $2 coin I had in my wallet and said it was a tip. He was shocked and didn't really know what to do. I had to explain that I was so impressed that I was essentially donating $2 to him. Tipping is INCREDIBLY rare here in Aus and only reserved for the most amazing sh*t you've ever seen.

Indeed, tip / gratuity-culture is very varied around the world:
Primarily the restaurants in Australia, Finland, Brazil, and Norway for example generally expect "no tips at all, neutral/grateful when tipped" (according to Wikipedia "Gratuity"-article).
It's still a nice option give a small bonus to exceptional-performances, especially if it can be done in "clandestine"-way like it is possible to do on some "platform economies" like say on "Wolt"-delivery / courier-service.
USA is just "bonkers" where they're expecting tips of (minimum) of 15-20%!
...I just don't what else to add there what hasn't been already said umpteenth-time...

Don’t get me wrong tipping culture here in the USA is ridiculous and many states have a very low minimum wage. But where I live the minimum wage (converting USD to Australian dollars) is actually higher than in Australia. I have friends that work as servers at restaurants that make over 100k a year. And that’s not in the big cities.

Tipping should be rare everywhere. It was intended to be a reward for someone going above and beyond their job requirements. Now it's expected even if you do everything yourself.

There are many places that do tips differently, some places have a high standard for tips so if you tip what you regularly do in like the states, they would be offended, and other areas don't do tips and they can sometimes be awkward when you try to give them tips. Moral of the story, when going someplace with a different culture, maybe look up tipping customs for where you'll be.

On the tipping thing... you'd be tipping the ppl who cooked your food, plus for the extra work they do like staying late to close/waking up extra early to open. In my personal case...I work at an "express service" carwash so I don't hand dry the cars or vacuum them, so we charge less than the "full service" locations that employ ppl who do it for you. Our location is meant as a quick "touch up & go" thing vs a deep clean option. Full services charge more & pay more.
We get less tips than full service, but the option is still there some a still have to stand/work outside in the rain/cold/snow, etc plus the cleaning of the entire site, machines, lobby & restroom, fixing machines, plus the risk of death or injury from getting ran over, crushed, or developing cancer from constant chemical exposure. Oh, & for dealing with Karens who inpatiently try to just drive thru that wash instead of waiting on Neutral & causing accidents, and who also complain about prices or who get aggressive for anything & the sexual harassment from creepy men & racial attacks. Plus, opening shift starts at 6 AM but we're expected to show up by 5:55 AM (yes, I'm serious).
All that for minimum wage & I still have to share any tip that I get between 2-3 other ppl, even if they're not as hardworking.
Also, my city only has express locations & the nearest full service is in another city that's almost an hour away. I could write so many Reddit stories on this place, ngl.
Maybe it's empathy, but I try to tip everywhere I go, even its a small amount & even if I don't understand their job. It's not my place to act judgy.

On the tips topic: It also doesn't help that there are loopholes in US employment laws that effectively say that if you work a job that gets tips, you can be paid less than minimum wage, so corporations try to incentivize customers into tipping so they can either steal the tips or steal their employee's wages.

Im a hairstylist, and a lot of factors go into tipping. My best tippers are people who like a fast service. I know exactly what they want, we have a quick chat and they're thanked and invited back. Some leave me %100. It all depends on whether or not you 1. Value my skill (have you ever tried and failed miserably at cutting your own hair?😅 yes, it is a skill) and 2. what part of the service is most important to you, and did I deliver that? Like, do you want to be in and out in 7 minutes? I can do that, want me to take my time and give you a complex style, I can do that too! Also, I should add that I never expect a tip. I get paid fairly for my time, and more than enough of my clients tip me to make it all average out at the end of the day. I also get an added bonus for selling products and for keeping up with the rushes by upping my productivity. So don't let the tipping culture stop you from having a relationship with your stylist. If a stylist is hungry for tips, they're either not getting paid fairly, or they're not trying to make up for it with the other incentives available.

Tipping has gotten so bad. There is the fast food place, Moe's, that I love with a passion. They've recently (more like a couple of months ago) introduced tipping, and I'm like, "What the?"
I always feel bad leaving $0 in tip when I order online because I understand the fast food industry. I used to work at Wendy's, but I'm not leaving a 6 for just a burrito and chips that I go and pick up while on my lunch break for work. Not to mention, they always forgolet parts of my order, and I have to constantly remind them (if I ever notice) when I'm there. If I had them deliver my food I could understand the tipping.
We really need to deal with the whole tipping issue here in the US. Workers deserve money, but making the customer have to tip is ridiculous. Tipping is done in kindness, it shouldn't be required for workers like waiters/waitresses to survive.

I haven’t seen anyone say it yet but tipping culture is out of control because wages are going down. Your boss will tell you “Oh we’re only going to pay you $9 an hour but the tips you get will make up for it!” And then you only get MAYBE three dollars in tips. (Where I work tips are distributed based on how many hours you worked, not what someone gives you) So I think the reason so many employees push people to tip more is because the wages they’re getting are crap but their employers are pretty much just shrugging and saying it’s the customers fault. Five bucks for a tip is pretty nice though so she was just being a choosing beggar.

Tipping culture here in Ontario, Canada really pisses me off. Adult Minimum Wage is $15.50/hr.; there is no separate, lowball-wage for servers earning tips like in the USA. And yes, having employers pay their employees a livable wage here means prices are higher, but that's still the way it SHOULD be. Where the problems start, is that most servers continue to perpetuate the misinformation that they "only survive because of tips", (including raising the expected tip from 10-15% to 20-25%!) So dinner for two now costs $80 instead of $50, plus you're expected to tip $16-20 minimum. Hell, there are even places that add the gratuity on last (after the 13% sales tax), so $80.00 turns into $90.40, which then becomes $108.48 - $113.00 (So ONE single "standard" tip from ONE single table is $18.08 - $22.60 for someone already making $15.50/hr). Rather than be "cheap", we've gone from eating out once a month to only two to three times per year total.

    1. Above and beyond service. Like I would personally hire this person to cater an event for me good.

    3. When the bill itself is small and what I tip would be a coffee for the server and the server provided good service ($5 for a $10 bill).
Otherwise the LOWEST I will go for bad service that isn't out right hostile is 15%-20%. The only way that goes to 0% is if the service and behavior is so bad that the manager needs to get involved (ex. I get assaulted or verbally abused by the server).

My wife operates a unisex hair salon. Some people will not tip her because she is the owner! Regardless if she is the owner she is also a cutter and stylist. You give a tip of appreciation for the cut./service. We have no maximum or minimum for a cut. When our prices were $15 for a men’s haircut. Someone who I knew from work became a regular customer. He would regularly give my wife a $10 tip. Why? Because he was getting haircuts at a downtown shop at $25 for the haircut alone. He figured he got what he considered was the same quality haircut or better and appreciated it. Also, he didn’t have to pay for parking. We lost him as a customer due to him getting a promotion and moved away for it.
Appreciation to the cutter/stylist comes in different ways. One is falling asleep in the chair. My wife didn’t understand that aspect of customer relationships as she isn’t from here. I explained it to her as it is a sign of complete trust with her. He did also tip appropriately.

Story 2: That poor boy will never tell his mother anything ever again. And she will wonder why he doesn’t talk to her in a few years’ time.
It reminds me of this story about my mother. I was bullied in middle school when I was like 11 or 12. One day, the school was doing some weird thing where the parents were allowed be in the school during the school day to basically audit every class they were in. My mother, of course, was one of the few parents to do this. During that day, my bully took an opportunity to like shove me as I was walking between classes. And like, I looked back and saw my mother had seen this. And for a while after this, the bully didn’t bother me, and to my preteen mind, I thought it was because he happened to get a glance of my mother or something and didn’t want to mess with me anymore.
No, I found out FIFTEEN YEARS LATER that what happened was my mother turned around and stalked the bully to his locker and she PHYSICALLY SHOVED HIM against the lockers and basically threatened his well-being! A freaking 40-some year old bullying a 12 year old! When I learned this, I was “retroactively embarrassed” for myself and seriously went to see if I could find my old bully on Facebook or something to apologize to him for having to deal with my mother. They'll only have to wait an extra week or two to get it done, but that makes me feel better. Karen screwed up getting a company truck fixed, so it'll be off the road for an extra week. Screw you, Karen.

Tip screen story: those POS machines should be set to show three or four percentages and a custom option, at my job it automatically populates 15%, 20%, and 30%.

The Barber shop one. She is lucky you are not using a card and paying her tip on that where they have to claim it. (well they gotta claim all tips but most don't claim cash tips.)
