I have a 1956 Match Target my Dad had hidden in his closet when he passed away. I didn't even know he owned it and have no idea where he got it...I can only believe he got it from his father who passed away in 1957. It is in mint condition. My dad was a cop but didn't care about shooting. It has the aftermarket walnut target grips as well which looks brand new so it shows how little action it has seen. There is some evidence that it was shot at some point so I didn't worry about keeping it unshot. I took it out to the range and it is far and away the most accurate handgun I've ever shot. Perfectly designed and ergonomic. What a wonderful gun.

Wonderful. I have a less fancy Huntsman 6 inch from 1969 I just found at a gun show. 30 feet all 20 rounds I fired into a quarter sized whole. Not quite as nice as yours condition wise, about 90%. It’s fantastic though.

I started collecting Woodsman and Match targets back in the late 70’s, I have a pretty nice collection now, a lot are new in the box! I got a lot of them when they were pretty cheap to buy. I collected several High Standard pistols also, and a couple m41 Smith’s! I love the old 22’s!

Your friend from whom you inherited this treasure and that "holy grail" Woodsman both must have been one VERY good friend.
Sad that he had to pass on for you to get the Woodsmans, but you really have something special.
You're right that you should never let them go.
The value will only continue to increase with time, but the sentimental value can't be calculated.
Great stuff, and really liked your review.

FYI The Beretta Neos mag will fit and function in the Woodsman. It Is an exact copy of the Woodsman magazine except for the base plate. You can find them for under $20. For a series 3 you will have to replace the magazine base plate. Original Colt base plates can be found at about $10. For a series 2 you will need to cut the notch in the mag. A 3/32" end mill does the job. If you have an original mag use it so set up the mill to cut the slot.....The kids are fighting over my Woodsman Match Target that I bought in 1962. for $75. Out of all my guns it's my favorite

She made the right choice!! I cringe every time I hear someone say "I inherited grandpas antiquated gun so I sold it for some cash". I want to hold them by the collar and yell at them for spitting on a family heirloom like that. you had several generations before you respect the tradition of passing something down, just for your ungrateful ass to sell it.
I get annoyed because we don't really have any heirlooms in my family so I am starting a few of them.

If it's an old model "The Woodsman" marked pistol with checkering on the takedown button (where the web of your hand meets the backstrap part of the frame) Only fire STANDARD VELOCITY ammo, not high velocity!

@@wizardofahhhs759 yup. Just yesterday I bought a 1956 Colt Huntsman from a guy who asking very little for it. I asked where he got it and he said it was his granpa's, then dads, and he was just given it but would rather have cash. I don't think he was a druggy, but looked like the type of person who was going to piss it away over the weekend. But again, I got it for way below market value and I will enjoy it much more than that guy.

My Grandpa bought one in 1936 and took his then 12yr old daughter (my Mom) out by the pasture and taught her to shoot with it, put it back in the box and told her to give it to her son when he turns 10.
He died before I was born.
      - A couple years later she was the only one home on the ranch and used it to convince a "Raggedy looking man" to get out of their tool shed and leave, by firing one shot at a plow blade near him, making a singing ricochet sound, and she said, *"He took off a-runnin' like his hair was on faahr and his arse was a-catchin'"* - lol
      She was only 4' 11"
She waited until my 12th birthday to give it to me and I still have it.
I just replaced the extractor that took a vacation after I fired some Winchester 1435fps x 40gr through it,
      ...whoops.

I don’t remember if it was a Woodsman or a Huntsman but my Grandfather’s Colt 22 was stolen from our home in Mississippi around 1980 and probably sold in the Baton Rouge, LA area. The serial # is 5007 and I believe it is from the 50’s. Man that was one sweet shooting pistol. Also, my grandfather filed down the front sight on it a bit to make it easier to shoot rabbits with his headlamp on. Shhh! Don’t tell nobody!😎 Dad still has the original case that it came with and it would make his life if we could ever find 5007. ☮️

I love to set a 5lb flour bag with a 6" orange sticky dot at 200yds and proceed to plink it with my 1936 Woodsman.

It's nice to see someone else shooting a Woodsman, I have my Grandfather's and I can tell you he admitted he killed more game with it than he did all his rifles and shotguns combined. I have killed a bit of game with mine and he competed in target matches with his. Mine is a 4.5 inch Sport model and is 2nd generation with the 1911 Colt style mag release. I have had many .22 pistols and revolvers and none can compete with it, his is from 1950. Love the Woodsman though, not a better .22 pistol out there.

Plinkster, you did a good review here. I started watching your videos a few months ago when my wife put a damper on my flying hobby (something about saving for our kids' college). So I'm dusting off my shooting hobby from my teen years in the 1970s. I started by getting my CCW, took a while and a few mistakes to get a carry pistol, took pistol defense classes, but none of the shooting was precision like I remembered from my youth with my sheridan air rifle. Then I saw your video showing off your collection of 22 pistols. I saw you shoot precisely with an old gun. Last week, I found a first series Colt Woodsman with the short 4.5 inch barrel at Gander Mtn for $649. Kinda high, but I love the gun. You're an inspiration. I will teach my kids to shoot with this gun. Thanks to you and H45 and FOD for the fun videos. Keeping me alive while grounded.
    Geoff
Update 2022: Well, I had one. It was a pretty model with Bakelite grips. The kids and I enjoyed it. I kept it in a generic plastic carry case for transport to the range. The pistol and case went missing in a split second of my own inattention and not getting it back in the safe immediately after use. I've been sad whenever I think of our loss and how utterly stupid I was. Completely unnecessary. Lesson learned.
11/4/22 update! Found it! In the safe where it should be, in the dark, on the floor in the right front corner where the light never shines.

I have 3 first series , one is a pre and a woodsman target then a field model, a second series match target and a field model Huntsman

That is a great collection! which one is your favorite to shoot? I have owned a 1st series target, a 1st series bullseye match target, a 2nd series target, a huntsman, a targetsman, and a third series match target. I'd have to say the 1st series match target is the most accurate for me but I have fun with all of them. I only have the match targets and the targetsman left but if I see any other deals on one I'll of course buy them up.

@@nickdipaolofan5948 my favorite is the second series match target and the huntsman is pretty good. The prewoodsman and the other 6" have amazing triggers but tiny sights, the first series 4.5" field model is much easier for carry with the leather flap holster it came with of about the same vintage but small sights as well. I have another prewoodsman that has USGI grips from ww2 that hang low like the elephant ear wood grips they had for training in ww2 but can't find a rear sight anywhere, I could rob one from a different well worn one I have but I hate taking anything from an old piece

Iver Johnson magazines from triple-k are the same as the old woodsman mags and are much cheaper and work 100%

Great video, not only did John Moses Browning know what he was doing I think you're friend that willed that pistol to you knew what he was doing. Giving it to someone that will respect and cherish it for the rest of your life..
Question: what were the targets you were shooting at at the beginning of the video? , I need to get / make some of those!

Hi Plinkster. I like your videos and your style. Keep up the good work. Two things. I would have like to see the take down on the gun, and if your filming outside on a breezy / windy day, maybe you could affix some extra foam to the mike to kill some of the wind noise. Just a thought. :)

If you can find one, a hi standard victor is an awesome 22

Ryan Parret i was bidding pretty hot on a Victor in the box. Serial number ended with 999. Got pretty high and I dropped out. Later heard the winner saying to someone that his wife let him come as long as he brought that Victor home to her. Otherwise would have been a good buy. Came home with a Huntsman and Challenger variation of the Woodsman. Went at decent enough price, that i decided they should come home with me. Victor is on the radar though.

Thank you for this video :) I also inherited a woodsman from my step father. Its got the dark coltwood original grips (I believe your walnut grips are aftermarket) with the side mag release and some cosmetic pitting on the end of the barrel.
Its something you cant readily replace like more common guns and it dose shoot beautifully, though in my case that just shows how poor a shot I really am!
I have federal bulk for most of my shooting also but it seems to fail once twicealmost every mag.

I've already bought a few too many guns due to Hickok & Nutnfancy.
Please try not to make me want another one too.
Maybe if it's on sale though? I noticed how prices and availability go up right after their videos come out. So, I usually have to wait a few months and in some cases years - to get a good price.
