She should have won if she had added the double back she left out and that she successfully performed at the American Cup that year. Nelly Kim was boaring, she was lucky, her landing on the double was quite low. She did not deserve a 10!

I used to think that Ludmilla’s gymnastics was boring, but watching her now more than 40 years later, she is stunning.
She is one of my favourite gymnasts. Grace beauty and talent inextricably combined.

I am liking all the amazing routines, but Nadia's made me feel something I not feel with the others: Joy. I absolutely _loved_ every single wonderful, whimsical moment of her routine. I know there are those who will break down the technicalities and say 'this was better' or 'that made her look silly' and so on but, in the end, the only one I'll remember... is Nadia's.

I miss beautiful gymnastics. I miss the era when gymnastics was lovely to watch, when it was graceful and musical and sometimes even whimsical. We have lost all of that. I understand why gymnastics are scored in the manner they are at present, but we have lost so much. Doing something difficult very poorly is worth more than doing something less difficult perfectly. And I don't think that this is an improvement on the sport.

All the choreographies are beautiful and well performed by the gymnasts
I look at the 70s as the transition years from more dance with some almost basic gymnastics moves of the 50s and 60s, to the 80s and later years when tumbling skills are basically the total routine, and basically little if any real dance. It also is the last Olympics that pianists only were used for the music.

Why Teodora Ungureanu wasn't in the final her Floor exercise in Montreal was incredible, So sad very underrated gymnast ☹

Interesting how the floor exercises back in the day was all just piano saloon type music. Nowadays it’s any popular song used.
The piano was played live during the routine. I truly miss the beautiful dance and choreography. Zero dance and choreography now, too bad.

Ludmilla there had probably the best choreography of her long career but she knew exactly that she had to have it due to her back injury and therefore limited tumbling strength. Throughout the years from 1971-1975 she performed much more difficult routines with a full double twist.
She was not able to stick it here on a regular basis and therefore went for a perfectly and beauitfully dance like routine to make up for it.
Well said, I’m fed up of hearing people slag her off for easy routines with no emotion.
Ludmilla always put in great solid routines , that only a few other gymnasts could beat on the individual apparatus,
And certainly not overall
What a fantastic display from Tourischeva. I am a die hard Nelli Kim fan but her compatriot almost outdid her here. Sheer poetry in motion.

A pretty good floor final, I gotta say. Here's some thoughts on the finalists:
Tourischeva - Dynamic choreogrphy with drama, well her tumbling stunts may not be as daring as the others yet she sells the dancing.
Escher - Gotta like her use of dynamics and she has good lines, it's just not enough to medal...
Kim - A well done double back with legs closed, followed by lively choreography. Tbh, a deserved 10 (her techniques are on point)
Comaneci - Actually, I'm entertained by her dance and tumbling and while some parts make her look silly, they still suit how fun and dynamic this is.
Kische - There's more of the dynamics and nice lines on display that seem characteristic of the GDR gymnasts, even when she didn't do complicated tumbling all throughout.
Pohludkova - Really weak in comparison to the others, yet i admit she had some good parts on her dance.
The results imo would actually stay like it was in actuality, but if there would have been the possibility of switching Pohludkova for Ungureanu, then the results would change to something like her getting silver and the rest going one place down (meaning Comaneci wouldn't get medalled). Of course, this is just my opinion; this is still a neat final as is.
Escher elements were the most difficult. You need to shut your uneducated mouth

Everyone keeps harping on about Nadia but Ludmilla at 24 years of age shows such energy vitality and exuberance. Sheer quality.

they gave Tourischeva a 9.9 for that routine? The choreography was great but the tumbling was not difficult at all!!! If they used the scoring system from today- which I'm not a fan of- her base score on difficulty would have been the lowest of all the finalists here.... she won silver- I hope she did a more difficult routine in the prelims- which carried over/added to finals back then for a total. I left gymnastics as an intermediate level gymnast in 1980 at 13 because of knee problems and I could do all those moves.
O sea...Observo a cada participante...., muy buenas, todas...; buenísimas, en realidad, excelentes... Pero...., cuando aparece Nadia... ¡Ooohhh...! Es como un cervatillo..., una avecilla feliz, al amanecer..., un soplo de Dios.
Si con una coreografía muy parecida a la de Olga Corbut pero sin la expresión artística de Ludmilla!
no tengo idea quien ganó... pero Nadia es tan perfecta que un 9.95 es "malo" jajajajaja...

Difficult to understand from today's perspective that Tourischeva scored a 9.90 and Teodora U. was not even in the final.
Earlier in 1976, Nadia was throwing double backs in smaller meets (on spring floors) and dismounting with a double full, so they couldn't give her a ten knowing she was capable of more here.
There was no such things as spring floors back then she pulled a double back at the American Cup in 1976 but she died down the tumbling because of her sprained ankle
I think she couldn't get the 10 on this event because she landed short from the corner of the floor.
I think I read that Nadia had a sore ankle and took the double back out.
Gymnastics is not about capability but execution.

More dance elements than now, and the gymnasts were so thin! I'm not saying today's gymnasts are fat, but they are much more muscular.
Kim also was very strong in skill, just Nadia like able to fly on floor
Nadia has something extra - it's just fascinating to watch her. Every movement is beautiful and precise. And her personality was fascinating - the stoic, extremely professional 14-year-old juxtaposed with the cutesy routines and pretty hair ties.
Nellie Kim usually managed to beat Nadia on the floor, so if anything she had that something extra.
Great combination of power and elegance I’d say.

Today's gymnastics has no elegance , no dance, too robotic and no fun , is too focused on technical tricks, padded beams, hand grips springy floors . The 60s and 70s were the best of times.

Soviet sports used politics in scoring to make sure their athletes were given higher scores.

@@auroradorada1977 Si investigas y ves más rutinas de está época te darás cuenta que muchas gimnastas tenían estilos diferentes, tu puedes ver a Maria Filatova y a Elvira Saadi en estos años y verás que tenían rutinas con diferentes estilos. La verdad no soy muy fan de los ejercicios de suelo de Nadia, puedes ver su rutina de 1978 y su coreografía y dificultad es mala.

There was no spring AT ALL in them.
They started to get a little bit more springy around 83, but still hard in the late 80's

La de Nadia fue la rutina mas bonita. Pero la de Kim tuvo mayor dificultad.
Todas ellas con alto nivel de competencia fue un duelo de poder a poder todas casi perfectas. Parecen mariposas jugueteando con el viento. Parecen grullas bailando en el lago
Les performances de Kim et Comaneci se situent très largement au-dessus des autres. Les 2 sont parfaites, mais Comaneci est la plus rapide, et va plus haut. Les deux méritaient 10, mais il est clair que les juges ont souhaité voir gagner Kim, peut-être pour rééquilibrer la compétition?
