    I was a gymnasts in the 70s. We sure thought we were doing some things back then. Compares to now, the difficulty of what we were doing doesn't even compare. Also, i remember just how far away the springboard was from the horse. Always scared me. So glad both the horse and springboard has been updated as it has.

    What a gem this video is. The intricateness of the uneven parallel bar routines. The moves are scrumptious. They are like slight of hand. And the leotards so plain and pure and cover the derrierre. The gymnastics is incredibly beautiful. I like the uneven parallel bars better then. Such intricate and varied and colorful.moves. The gymnasts are wonderful. And there is wonderful Ludmilla Tourecheva right before the 1972 Olympics she and Olga Korbut. I love this video.

    One thing that really strikes me about the floor routines is that the dance moves and the gymnastic moves flow seamlessly into one another, and it's a shame that that has been lost. The recent Olympic floor champion was excellent, her tumbling incredible, but the choreography was stiff and awkward compared to these 60s routines.

      Yes. When I was a competitive gymnast in the late 80s, I did floor routines to theme music from Ghostbusters, one year was Indiana Jones, one year was Star Wars. One of my teammates had a great routine to Jaws theme music. Back then we danced and did elements TO the music. You rarely see that anymore. All they want to do is throw their arms around while getting a breath before the next tumbling pass. The artistry is gone.

    • @viktoria6045
      @viktoria6045 Před 2 lety +1

      сложность упражнений была такая, что их можно было выполнить при наличии груди и женственной фигуры . То, что выполняют гимнастики сегодня ( например двойное сальто с тремя винтами) предполагает совсем другое строение тела-пакет мускул, маленький рост. С женской фигурой это выполнить невозможно. Если вернуться к сложности 60-х годов, то тогда и фигуры опять станут женственными, девочек не нужно будет закачивать до "неженского" состояния

I decided to get to see the team as they arrived (or maybe departed) at the airport (airport security was much looser back then.) I always admired Ludmila and Olga both but especially Ludmila. This was an interesting time in gymnastics. Specifically judging. If you think figure skating has biased judges in the 60’s gymnastics judges were worse. The US team had a front flip in a forward tumbling pass. The Russians protested it as an illegal move and the US team was penalized. Kathy Rigby received a score of 5.4 on her beautiful beam routine because Russian judges felt the US judge gave a Russian gymnast too low of a score. Having been a gymnastic judge in the 70’s I can tell you these scores are way over inflated especially since the first vaulter didn’t even do her vault correctly. Her twist on was only the arms and not the body. Such were the days of Soviet controlled sports.

      I have big hair which I must say is very sweaty and feels like having a coat on your head in 75 degree, high humidity days. I can't imagine doing any type of sport activity with lots of hair on the head. 🤢

    As the gymnasts await their turn, the coaches give them a pep talk.
    " You can do this blindfolded. Just like at practice ( pulls out a tall can of Aqua Net and sprays her hair like no tomorrow ) smooth and stick the landing ( more spray) You got this!"

    Wow look at all the grown women! That would be nice. I actually have a memory of being a kid and wanting to be a gymnast but being too shy to wear the Leo in front of a crowd because it can be...so ill fitting and you know when you're a kid you're real shy, or at least I was. These leos actually fit!

      The ones from Romania were the best looking. They were completely tailored with seams down the front, elastic in the waist and everything covered; no butt or pubic area exposed. Also, matching underwear.
