I can't believe that the commentator tried to get Yelena Naimushina to give him a kiss while during the interview. She looked very embarrassed and got out of it by saying that she wasn't allowed to do that during the competition.

Thank you so much for posting this! I am so old that I remember watching this when it first aired and actually recording it on an audio tape recorder because that’s all the technology we had back then. You’ve just made my week.

Nadia won this meet with her solid routine on the bars, which she probably should have been awarded a 10.5 compared to the other performers due to difficulty alone. Her beam was great even with the bobble, but her floor was also spectacular - no comparison to the other performers.

The "Hindorff" move used by Nadia (first release move) is executed so well. Her bars in this competition were more difficult than 1976, although the Comaneci Front - still a highly rated difficult skill even today. I have never seen anyone else do it besides Nadia. Did any one notice the 1970's "game show" music during the routine review? Sounds similar to "The Dating Game" sound bites.

The Comaneci salto is terribly difficult! Not too many try it, but a handful of gymnasts have competed it- Atler, Ferrari, as well as a few others

The "Comenci" release has been performed by quite a few gymnast! Plenty of videos on here (CZcams) that show it, at least videos of everyone I'll speak of! As mentioned before: Vanessa Atler, Vanessa Ferrari, then there's Dasha Joura, Grace Taylor, Jacqui Dunn, Aja Sims, Georgia Dabritz and others. All of which whom are former national or international elite gymnast!
It's still a really rare skill and one I'd love to see more of! Aja Sims did one in connection with a Weiler kip; which was cool because it's hard to connect! And there once was a video of Grace Taylor doing like 5 (or more) in a row during training, it was crazy! Wish I could find it again, the Aja Sims video is still available, luckily!

That's the release that Vanessa Atler tried and failed at forever, poor girl. Her dumbass coaches should have taken it out of her routine. I feel like that single skill is what ultimately destroyed her career and her chance to go to the Olympics.

I used to love Champions All! Do they still hold that competition in the UK, or has it been consigned to the gymnastics history books? I also used to like Wheetabix Young Gymnast of the Year and Thames Telelvision Junior Gymnast. The latter competition was once won by a gymnast from my own club - my claim to fame!!

NOT. Things like that weren't such a big deal. Everything was not all blown out of proportion. It's just a joke and he's not a predator of little girls. It seems like it in light of what's going on now but I really doubt things are like that is this situation. I grew up in the 80s and there were no hellicopter parents. That's not to say sexual assualt didn't take place. It did and it was swept under the table, which is awful. But we don't need to overreact.

Nadia's performance is awesome; even more so since she was 5'4". After the 1960's when difficult acrobatic moves were introduced into women's gymnastics almost all the winners were 5'-0" or less. If you factor in Nadia's height, the level of difficulty is astonishing. Perhaps Simon's 2016 Olympic floor exercise was more difficult. Simone jumped so high spinning so fast that I couldn't follow it; and, she appeared to land perfectly. Nevertheless, Simone is only 4'-8" (an 8" height advantage).
That gives Simone a 12% strength to weight ratio advantage, a 25% decrease on moment of inertia advantage, and Simone preformed on a spring floor. Combined those are tremendous advantages in acrobatic gymnastics which, although the name hasn't changed, is what today's women's gymnastics should be named. The beauty, grace, elegance, and artistry that existed in Nadia's time have disappeared.
Realistically, just as I cannot compare Nadia to Katarina Witt, I can't compare Nadia to Simone because they performed in different sports. Nadia's sport was artistic gymnastics and Simone's sport is acrobatic gymnastics.
I wish I could clone Nadia. I would love to have Nadia daughter. Only I would suggest she do ice skating where she would shine with her beauty, elegance, and artistry. Her height and body shape are ideal for ice skating. Because the difficult moves are spinning rather than tumbling, in ice skating, there is no moment of inertia in being shorter. However, there is a slight moment of inertia advantage in being slender. That is why winning ice skaters are beautiful and not the extremely short muscle bound freaks you see in today's women's gymnastics.

Wonderful comment. I also love figure skating. Unfortunately I am not as interested in gymnastics though I was huge fan before the change to acrobatics. The last great gymnast I loved was Daniela Silivas. Figure skating is also going nuts with quads over quads. But I agree Nadia could have been an amazing skater, only Romania is not a skating nation.
