  • We've all seen the little light pop onto our refrigerator, alerting us that it's time to change out your fridge filter again. But do you really need to replace your refrigerator water filter? What does a refrigerator water filter do? Join John Woodard, Master Water Specialists, as we cut open three different models of the same filter and take a peek inside. We then dive into how fridge filters work, if you should buy OEMs or aftermarkets, and how often you really need to change them!

    The comparison of construction, while interesting, doesn't get to the meat of the issue which is how a particular filter will perform for a particular water supply. The only way to know is to test, regardless if it's OEM or aftermarket. The gold standard is to test the water before and after filtration for things of concern such as Cl, Fe, Ar, Pb to see how it actually performs, both when new, and after running a few hundred gallons through it. Now that would be an interesting video.

    You're a water guy not some one trained to sell what the company wants the customer to buy. I've always believed if you have a good product and you take the time to listen to your customer and then educate that customer there is no need to hard sell. To me hard selling is usually a sign of either a overpriced product or a sub par product or both. Great video!

    Did you consider that now filters have a chip on them to tell when 6 months have past? Just like rip off ink cartridges in copiers. So if a brand new fridge was in a house 5 months with no water use it will still say to replace after 1 more month and just like the ink cartridges light reset without new chip or new filter

    I have well water no chlorine so I figure I am good for double recommended 6 months ....We use a Britta for our coffee maker and I never have problems with 3 times the recommended 1 month. Happy my home is post lead era too ....my old house on city water the ice maker filter would plug up by 6 months! So I am thinking it mainly depends on your water how long a filter lasts or is healthy to keep using

    I've been using the same filter now for about 2 years and the ice cubes are very clean.

      This is actually a great question. Always change the filters based on the instructions on the filter. Different filter brands need to be changed at different intervals. No filter should be left in place beyond six months. The issue is bacteria growth. Many studies have shown bacteria trapped in the filter, as a result of the filter doing what it is supposed to do, can begin to repoduce and grow to levels high enough to cause illness within just two months. Being on a well you are more susceptible to higher bacteria level than city water supplies simply due to the fact your water is not being shocked or treated to prevent bacteria, viruses, cysts, and other water-borne toxins.
      To reduce risk to you and your family I suggest changing your refrigerator water filter every three months at a minimum. I also suggest adding a UV filter to your well filtering system. Before making a substantial investment, have your water tested. Testing every three to six months will provide peace of mind and possibly avoid having to invest in more filtering equipment.
      Growing up in a rural farming community here in Washington state we thought our water was pretty safe. After losing animals to cancer at a high rate, my folks had the water tested. It turned out we were being poisoned due to the over reliance of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer, and live stock hormones, antibiotics, and such. Everything landing on the soil was trickling down into our shallow ground water. We immediately stopped using the well, had water trucked in, and had to wait three years for the municipal water supply to arrive. It took proposed housing developments for the water company to invest in expanding the water network. By that time my folks had adapted pretty well with subterranean rain water cisterns and reducing our water use.
      Test, treat, and multistage filtering is key to healthy well water.
      Cheers!

      @DieselRepair12 Před 2 lety

      You don't really want zero dissolved solids in your drinking water. You get vitamins and nutrients (some electrolytes) from the minerals, so It's kind of like drinking distilled water and not that good for you

    • @rameynoodles152
      @rameynoodles152 Před 2 lety

      Total dissolved solids is not necessarily a good indication of how clean your water is. Water that is filled with bacteria can still read 0ppm on a TDS tester.

    My samsung ice maker in the fridge has stopped working. I have used aftermarket filters for years with no issues. I replaced the filter and tripped the reset switch on the ice maker. It appears no water is getting to the ice maker, even though the supply from the basement is pushing water. Will the icemaker work if I take out the filter to see if the filter is the problem?

    • @jimd1944
      @jimd1944 Před 4 měsíci

      Most likely no, unless you put in a "bypass" plug provided your model has one. When the filter is removed the water supply line is shut off (reason you do not have to turn off the water to replace a filter) so, no water will go to your icemaker or water dispenser,

    How do I cycle a new water filter? The instructions say I have to flush it with like 10 gallons of water but my refrigerated would break if I left the water dispenser on that long. What do you recommend?

    • @J.Cameron.Stuart.Adams.
      @J.Cameron.Stuart.Adams. Před 3 lety

      Yes.... You must flush the new filter by dispensing a minimum of three gallons. Different filter have different flushing recommendations. Always follow the instructions. Flushing the filter is simply removing all of the charcoal dust from the filter.

    Hi, I have a question. I only drink bottled water for health reasons. I drink absolutely zero ice or water from my fridge. However every 9 months the fridge indicates to me that the filter needs to be changed and I order a new one. If I drink no water from my fridge is there any practical reason for me to be changing the filter? Thanks in advance.

      Why would you used bottled water instead of filtered water from your fridge? Most bottled water is just city water put through a filter.

    • @J.Cameron.Stuart.Adams.
      @J.Cameron.Stuart.Adams. Před 3 lety +1

      Bacteria growth within the filter is the reason your refrigerator is telling you to change the filter.
      Refrigerators time filter changes. Depending on the model this ranges from 3 to six months. Any bacteria, in the water supplied to your home, captured by the filter can begin to replicate. Within three months the bacteria level in the filter can reach levels high enough to make the user ill. Those visiting may not tolerate the bacteria being dispensed by your refrigerator as well as those who regularly consume the same water. Those living in the home can build some immunity to certain bacteria. If anyone is coming to stay, be sure to change the filter and flush it as directed.
      Cheers!

    • @J.Cameron.Stuart.Adams.
      @J.Cameron.Stuart.Adams. Před 3 lety +1

      Your refrigerator should have come with a bypass plug. Rather than changing a filter you do not use, put the bypass plug in. Just be sure to flush the waterline every few weeks to prevent bacteria and mildew growth in the refrigerator water. line.
      Those with residential refrigerators in their RVs are especially susceptible to bacteria and mildew growth in their refrigerator. One typically unplugs and stores their RV most of the year. Once the refrigerator is turned off, the water left in the line is a breeding ground for thing nasty. One must flush the line before storing the RV. Otherwise you'll be taking the refrigerator apart to replace the line and the chilled water reservoir (if equipped). There are additives to add to the refrigerator water line and reservoir to prevent growth of bacteria,, viruses, mildew, and such. Check with the manufacturer for proper winterizing and storage instructions for your specific residential refrigerator in your RV. The same applies to your vacation home.
      Cheers!

      Your refigerator cant see that a filter is gross. The only way it knows for you to change it is by how much water has passed through it or maybe the time that the filter has been reset. It doesnt have a mechanic to scan the filter lol

    Here is a fun fact. I have a whole home water filter. It has a giant sediment... granulated activated carbon filter and a activated charcoal block. It costs 200 a year or 100k gallons. Fridge filter for my whirlpool fridge is 50 dollars for 200 gallons? Someone isn't being very fair to the customers are they. By comparison that is 25 cents per gallon for the fridge filter.. and .002 cents for the whole home filter.. Weird.. (nope).

    Water filters seem like a scam. Mains water is pure and treated here in the UK, there are no significant contaminants. Also like many households we have a water softening system.
