  • In today's class we will take a look at a Hittite text referring to their conflict with the Alashiya Kingdom, located in what is now modern day Cyprus. The past tense (preterite) and enclitic pronouns will be introduced.
The text was first published in cuneiform by H. Otten in K Bo XII 38. The transliteration presented in the video is from 'The Hittite Conquest of Cyprus Reconsidered' by Hans G. Güterbock (1967)
    www.jstor.org/stable/543703
All translations presented in the video are my own as are all interpretations and mistakes ;-)
Here is the link you will need to download the fonts to correctly render Hittite on your screen and where you can find the Hittite sign list (HZL):

    Welcome! Assuli!
If you're interested in learning an ancient language but don't know where to begin then this is the course for you!
A step by step guide to the Hittite language, one of the best attested languages from antiquity. Here we will begin with an introduction to Hittite nouns (a-stems) and we will go over the case system, which can be a challenge for learners with an English speaking background.
With at least one class coming every week, let's jump in and learn about this fabulous Anatolian tongue, the earliest example we have of an Indo-European language!
This course is intended for complete beginners with no prior language learning experience. Due to this, a few simplifications will be made in how certain linguistic items are presented, but these will always be clarified in later episodes or in the comments.

Please never stop making these hittite language lessons. Also can you do hittite word of the week on your short clips it would be helpful. Finally I'd like to ask will you be doing videos on different vocabulary like nouns such as colours and animals etc. And will you teach lessons such as how to greet someone in hittite?

Thanks for the kind words, it really motivates me. I think I can start a word of the week from September, I think doing some vocab specific classes on different word groups is a great idea! I'll do that for sure. Regarding the greetings, I'll take a deeper look into it. I actually thought about that for the first class but I was unsure how reliably (if at all) we can construct informal greetings (formal would be doable). Thanks again and have a great day!

Really interesting that Hittite people claimed themselves to be the winner in every conflict. It’s quite possible the fact because Hittite did have more army and resources for critical battles.

@@LearnHittite I surely will! I'm still on lesson 7 but I'm trying to keep it a daily study as frequency is the key to any learning, especially at my age, also having neuro issues!
