GMG Reviews - Warhammer: The Old World - Forces of Fantasy (Part 2 - The Empire of Man)

  • Brought together from warring tribes by the first Emperor Sigmar; the Empire of Man is as dynamic as it is fractious. Having set aside their differences to destroy the menace of the Vampires at Hel Fenn, an uneasy era of peace is disrupted by menaces in the east and north. Grab your fanciest hat, charge up your steam engines and let's head back to the Old World to see what's up with the regular-old-humans of Warhammer.
    Big thanks to GW for the complimentary copy of the books to review.

    2:37 - well this is before they teach them magic. In fact, iirc, Teclis helping the Empire during the coming Great War Against Chaos was considered exceptional and not SOP for the High Elves, so in a way it makes sense for them not to be available as allies. Further, iirc at this time, Ulthuan is only just now breaking its isolationist policies and re establishing contact with the Old World, which further adds weight to them not being available as Allies. Maybe when the Elf Journal drops, one of the variants lists in it will be an expeditionary force or something and it’s rules will say to add it to the Empire’s list of Allies to represent these things.

    • @vandur2322

      Since Teclis has yet to teach humans proper magic and establish the Colleges, why does the Empire even have free access to Wizards? I've always imagined in the lore that a major Empire advantage over Brettonia was wizards being in good supply rather than rare.

      @@vandur2322 The Empire had Wizards, but they were so likely to destroy themselves and vast swathes of countryside that the Elves taught them a more disciplined magic. This helped them a) be better allies and b) not blow up themselves and Elven waystones that held back Chaos...

    • @lcmiracle

      @@vandur2322 If you look back into older lores, at this time the Empire is in a five century long civil war, with different claimants breaking from the Sigmarite dominated elected imperial line doing their own things. In the old first edition WFRP Realm of Sorcery supplement, Middenheim had its own Wizard school long before the Black Plague, and Talabhecland established their own battle magic school after Ottila I declared herself empress. And a lot of Old Faith communities still had hedge wizards practicing native sorceries.
      The Marienburg supplement as well as Dwarfs: Stone & Steel supplements mentioned the Wizard Wars, which started with Wizards in Middenheim after the wizard guild there uncovered necromancers and necromancers among their ranks, and spread as far as Marienburg. Also Dieter Helsnicht was a Wizard in Middenheim in 1207 IC even onto 8th edition.
      Mordheim, which is set shortlhy after the 2000IC, allowed the Empire mercenaries to hire Warlocks, which are stray, unsanctioned wizards using unrefined magic.
      The Empire had access to Wizards, just irregular. What is weird is for Sigmarite armies to include them since Sigmar himself specifically established the Silver Hammers in order to root out all magic in the Empire

    • @vandur2322
      @vandur2322 Před 6 měsíci

      @@lcmiracle thanks for that deep info from broader sources. It still seems weird to me though because my whole life I've known from the 4th ed High Elf book that Teclis taught a few basic battle spells to the human hedge wizards so they could be of some during the war. Even still it was implied that the 3 elves (Teclis, Yrtle and Finrier) did the bulk of the magical work for Magnus' army.
      Afterwards Magnus asked for the Colleges to be founded so that the armies if men would never have to fight a battle without them again. Implying that they had been doing it without them previously.

    • @lcmiracle
      @lcmiracle Před 6 měsíci

      @@vandur2322 That would be the impression from my readings of all the WHFB rulebooks and army lists and also WFRP 2E as well, however, in Empire army list 6th edition page 60, it is stated that it was because of the preachings of the Priests of Sigmar that (correctly) connected sorcery to Chaos, that wizards to even sometimes herbalists were hunted down.
      However, I argue it would make little sense for the Middenheimers to obey this order since the Ulricans have always had a major rivalry with the Sigmarites, and when Ottilia seceeced, she canonically blamed her lost of the election of Sigmarite temperings and banished the cult from Talabheim all together, she canonically had the support of both the Cults of Taal and Ulric at the same time, making it likely that she could easily acquire magical assistance after the Age of War started as well.
      Magnus was a Sigmarite at Nuln, which take it to mean that the armies he is used to had all been deprived of mages due to dominating Sigmarite influences (WFRP 1E Enemy Within actually had the Cult of Sigmar being the main influencing power behind the elected Emperors during the Age of 3 Emperors). I think it would be perfect for GW writers to make it so that Magnus' legalization of Wizardry was also used to placate the other provinces that might have had their own magical institution over more than 500 years of fractured rule.
      And I think someone mentioned that these wizards can also represent the priests of other gods like Priest of Morr using Lore of Death, Taal (and Rhya) using Lore of Beasts and Life, etc.; it can allow the Priest of Sigmar and a "Wizard" in the same army, but it can't address the presence of Demonology in this case.

      Keep in mind, the High Elves in general were going to let the Empire get fethed royally during The Great War Against Chaos.
      It was only because of Teclis that the HE expedition comes to the rescue, and it was *extremely* unpopular amongst the HE nobility that he also goes on to found the Empire's Colleges of Magic after the victory against Chaos.
      Since the relaunch is currently being set roughly around 2200 - 2300 Imperial Calendar, which is the century or so leading up to TGWAC, it fits that the snobby HE's aren't really allies just yet ;-)
      I'm absolutely stoked for this release personally!!
      Going to grab the Bretonnian launch box, as Brets were my very first Warhammer army waaaaay back in '96/97 with the Brets vs. Lizardmen big box!
      But, I still have a bunch of unbuilt Empire stuff from 8th ed, when I'd wanted to do a Morr/Vampire hunting themed knightly order crusade/purge force themed around the Wars of the Vampire Counts. Happy to see that Witch Hunters for example are still around, despite the VC's themselves (for now) being only a PDF non-supported faction.

      If they're sticking to the lore (which could be doubtful) the Reiksguard won't be formed until well after the great war against Chaos.
      If I remember correctly they were created by Wilhelm II or III, grandfather of Karl Franz. Can't remember the exact year but it should be (on average) less than 100 years before Franz if it's his grandfather.
      Then again they've shown with things like the Steam Tanks and Mages that they have no issue playing with or getting rid of lore for gameplay or model purposes so they might do a retcon.
      You could also just use the rules and base it in whatever timeframe you want as many people I know used to do and aim to do. I'm building an Imperial Army for Karl Franz personally as I'm not fond of the timeframe they've stuck it to.
      But lots of options really.
      Edit: Highland miniatures have models for Reiksguard foot knights if you want them. There is also Perry Foot knights if you want more true scale with lots of options.
