  • I make my Urban G/S more off-roady because BMW couldn't be bothered to.
My factory gearbox blew up in September 2023, I spent months saving and eventually purchased a gearbox from a 2013 R1200G/S Adventure. The nerds will know why I opted for this gearbox over a direct replacement, which was available at the time of purchase, however my Urban G/S needs to be less urban. Why go through all the work and not have some fun with some alternate parts?
I'm not formally trained in any mechanics, I studied Industrial Instrumentation. I'm just a young-ish buck with a cavalier attitude and enough tools to be dangerous. My channel is not for sale, anyone looking for corpo deals will be told to pound sand.
The only difference between the 2010-2013 R1200GSA gearbox and a 2010-present RnineT gearbox is a lower first gear. 2.650:1 compared to 2.375:1. The same bikes all share the same primary gear reduction and final drive ratio so the difference at the wheel is only ~1.3 rotations.
I shouldn't need to worry about speedo corrections...maybe if I change final drives, but the bike is CANbus and smart, unlike me. And even if I were to change final drives for more torque, I might as well buy a DR650, like I originally wanted to.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with you. Sometimes, doing a job yourself, when you don't have the experience (or tools), for the time and effort it takes (and the uncertainty about the job being done correctly), maybe a false economy, and parting with the dollars to pay a professional may be a cheaper option. And sometimes, it may be that what you are really buying is the satisfaction and learning experience from doing it yourself.
