- Ever been to the barn with a non-rider? Ever tried to have a conversation about your horse with someone who’s never been around horses before? Yeah? We have, too. And it never seems to go well. So we decided to compile everything we say to non-riders in one hilarious video.

ArtSwirl If I lightly touch my horses side she goes into a fast walk (she's a TN Walker so more like a trot for a normal horse). All I need to do is click and she goes xD
Kris Mart-Van or in that flicka movie where she trains a wild horse in like a day. Or has anyone seen Moondance Alexander?! Cute movie but it drives me nuts! No wonder people say it's easy, that it's not a sport - that movie let her learn to all 3 eventing types in less than two months, to the point where she actually did a show - jumping like 4'5" and I think doing complex dressage moves (I don't remember). Not to mention she did it on a western pinto and learned from a retired western rider dude who had some slight experience in teaching jumping. (This is so long oml I am angry idk why). Moondance, the girl, literally knew nothing about horses yet hopped on in a western saddle and started posting trotting perfectly

One of the horses I ride (name is Cowboy) is CONSTANTLY rolling in the dirt and mud and we have to take extra time to make sure he’s clean before he can be ridden.

Jazzy one of my aunt's horses has hoof problems she's at live a lot of her children they tend to get sore easily which she's only a few years younger than me I'm 29 and I tell her every time I see her girl keep this up and you're going to outlive your children 2 had colic had to be put down don't know how many she has lost count
or when they see him pick up his foot and slam his foot on the ground. they’re like “HES MAD HES GONNA KICK YOU”. i’m like “no. flies are just bothering him”
Or, in the case of one particular gelding:
"oh look, there's something wrong with his foot!"
Everybody who knows him: "Nah, he's just being melodramatic. Show him an apple and he'll miraculously be fine..."
"No, that's not a blindfold."
"That's a foal, not a pony."
"That child is not riding a baby horse, no."
"No, pulling him up when he tries to graze does not hurt him."
"That's not the barn I go to. There are, like, seven near us."
"You're not galloping. That's a trot."
"He's throwing his head, he's not bucking."
The number of times I've had to explain why my horse wears her flymask all the time. At this point I just say it's like sunglasses

pretty sure they aren't supposed to lay down while eating (at least not for a long or a lot of food) heard it can cause problems like twisted gut.

Thank you! Being an Equestrian isn't easy. I don't really consider myself one completely, but my uncle has a ranch and I am at my friends (I consider him an uncle as well, though we're technically not related) barn all the time!

I remember being in the grocery store on the phone with my friend debating about sheets with the weather, and not realizing the looks I was getting when I was saying,

When I was doing the online dating thing and said in my profile that I was a horse person, some random guy asked me "so what music do u like besides country?" and I was like, "Um, did I say I liked country? I like 90s country, I suppose, but it's definitely not my favorite genre." His response? "Oh I thought your profile said you ride horses."
Because apparently liking horses is synonymous with country music fanaticism.
Omg, yes! People always think that since I am an equestrian I like country music(which I don't).

I get grossed out when I have to pick up the dog's poop but then I go to the stables and after I pick out the horse's hoof, I usually have the dirt and poop that I picked out on my hands and just rub it off with a "meh."
+Silver Winds I kinda get like that with my birds, as someone who works with dogs for a living ( groomer ) and has pet pigeons, people are always weirded out when I say I'll take pounds of pigeon poo over a little bit of dog.. pigeon poo is nearly odorless except during very specific times, dries in less than a minute for easy cleanup, and is great for your lawn to keep it happy and green! Dog poop is runny, smelly, hard to clean up, and kills your lawn lol

I was escorting a slow ride of novices when one of the horses put his head down to grab at the grass. The rider slid down the horse's neck, taking the bridle off as he landed on the floor. He said to me: "Carol, the thing that holds his teeth in has fallen out"! Nearly pee'd myself!

It's really true, that horse poop is nothing like dog poop. Granted I still wouldn't eat either one of them, but horse poop smells better, is way less gross to clean up, and generally doesn't stink even a portion of how any carnivores crap smells.
I was visiting up in Oregon and ended up volunteering at a stable there. I live in California, so I'm a "city slicker" by their standards.
The barn manager lady asked me to clean out a stall. I did. She was shocked that I didn't complain. I was like, have you ever cleaned out an indoor male cats litterbox?!?! THAT is worth a fuss....this is....daisies. Lol!
True, their poo is mainly just digested (and occasionally undigested) hay, it won't kill you so why worry? :-)
Hex Isme one reason for a dogs poop smelling really bad is probably that they eat meat and when it rots it smell disgusting and horses eat plants and plants don’t smell that bad.
Usually if the cat's (or dog's) poop smells strongly, it's because of a poor diet.
I’ve heard that in some cases it’s perfectly fine to eat horse poop. Once my riding instructor was going on and on about how it’s fine to eat it while holding a nugget and we were all sick of hearing it so to shut him up my friend took the nugget and had a nibble. He didn’t like the poop at all but never got sick
@@lilwoofer8333 Actually it's because they eat high protein diets, 30-40%, whereas horses only eat 10-12%. Protein stinks!

dude 9 yrs old got jam-rammed but a fucking mini against the stall door that wasn't securely held open (like just swinging not tied over or anything) so the door flung and smashed against me too. sunk to the floor while it trotted off to its "master" all proud of himself..fucking apple-ass. .-. I was caught of guard cuz i did not expect some tiny little shit to be so strong. (it wasn't a light tap btw it was a good swift hard THUMP for everyone to hear and go WTF WAS THAT?!) lmao

At my grazing we have a little welsh mountain who is 28 years old and we recently got a big clyde x who is rising 3. I love telling people that the 'foal' is actually our oldest and the giant horse is the youngest, it just boggles their minds.
What we really need is “Yes, I really do need all these saddle pads- you wouldn’t understand...”

+Horsepassion4life Sometimes it does, because the smaller the horse is, the less often its going to be able to give you a concussion when it kicks. Where as a bigger horse can knock you out with a swing of its head. But yes SOOO true. XD

I was bucked off my horse once (she was half pony half Arabian) I think I was 6 or 8, I’m kinda surprised I wasn’t afraid to ride after that given my age

1. I know he looks white but we call them grey.
2. No. That horse has blue eyes, not red. There are no Albino horses.
3. No he is stamping at the flies, Not me. Ummm, I can just tell. No - really, he is just kicking at flies dont worry. No really i promise he isn't angry. He is just shaking his head at the flies too.
4. I know i said use a flat hand... but not that flat. Try not to let the apple keep rolling off before he eats it.
5. What?!? No horses dont lap like a dog. They sip the water like a person would.
6. No we just desex the boys. Mares aren't desexed. Yeah, but dogs are different.
7. No we don't say they are limping we say they are lame. Yeah a dog limps but a horse is lame.
8. No they don't vomit. Because they aren't like dogs and cats.
9. Its normal, your dog would eat his poo too if he was here.

Well if the skin is pink then they are a true white but if the skin is grey/black then it is actually grey
because an angry horse usually shows more movement and hostility, often has its ears back, gets fiesty, and snorts/breathes hard outta nostrils flaring them. Etc. If you knew jack about horses you'd know that. You get to know someone , be it human or animal. and "Feel" their intent. It's called having a bond. You and your horse establish a line. and know where that line is and isn't. Ground manners / Learning that is the FIRST thing you should be learning. If you can't comprehend that or understand what a horse is doing on the ground ...What hope do you have on its BACK? horse saddles sadly don't have saftey eject seats with parachutes. at least on the ground of shit goes down you can "run away" roll outta the way, avoid it, let the horse go etc. not always, but certainly alot more than on its back.
When my friend is over and we're looking at my horse, this is usually the conversation..
"No, stop. She doesn't like to be to touched there."
"Do not go behind her."
"It's not a tool of torture, it's a curry comb.."
And so on.
When she said “no baby horses are a totally different thing from ponies” I no joke screamed “WHY CANT MY FRIENDS UNDERSTAND THAT” 😂
I remember when we would ride in parades, and I would ride my pony, Stewie, (he's 11 hands) and all the little kids would say "AWWWW LOOK AT THE BABY HORSE!!!!" I would get so pissed.

I have a pony, I know FOR A FACT smaller is NOT safer (ponies are little devils). Also there is a pony Appaloosa mare at our barn, it is the devil in horse form

Yes there is a horse at our barn and he is huge. I don’t know how many hands he is but he is the sweetest. But the ponies! They had to get the ponies like 3 new blankets because in me of them kept chewing them up. And one time one of the ponies bucked the rider off three times during a lesson. We made sure the pony had nothing wrong with its back. He was just being bad.
@@gracieday5991 Yup. 2 horses I've trained come to mind: an 18.3hh Percheron who was gentle as a lamb, and a 12hh pony who was a flaming nutball--he would rear up and flip over when you tried to mount him. He eventually got over it, but wow, he was the craziest equine I've ever met. And I've met a LOT.

(happened to my sister) ooh i thought she was deeadd lmao. you could hear it. sounded like something broke. to bits. But guess it was just the saddle... (think spirit in the corral (sp?) scene.)

So true at my last Riding school there were a couple thoroughbreds and they were very well behaved and then there was this lil Shetland pony that kicked someone when in the shin when his stable was getting mucked out he also tried to bully that stallions was quite funny to watch.
