  • As most indicators continue to show the gap between the rich and the rest getting bigger, renowned author and economist Thomas Piketty’s latest book strikes an optimistic note.
In A Brief History of Equality, Piketty argues that the world is broadly on the right track to reducing socioeconomic inequality.
"There's a long run of social demand for equality that is inseparable from modernity," he says.
“The key to transformation is collective mobilisations through new forms of political parties, political movements.”
On UpFront, French economist and author Thomas Piketty joins Marc Lamont Hill to discuss the politics of building global equality and the lessons to be learned from history.

Enjoyed the interview, but thought Marc's title/hook is quite odd - 'optimistic' is quite an odd term if we require more events like the French revolution, world wars & Haitian slave revolt to achieve better economic relations...

A fool takes no pleasure in prudence,
only in revealing your own heart.

He must be a nice person, he is polite and possibly nice to animals etc. On the other hand this kind of "Gay optimism" in 2020's when the far-right is rising to power everywhere and allying with big business...
Strange that he didn't mention China, where CCP has a program of "Olive shaped wealth distribution".

Monsieur, you don't need to convince me, you have to convince my government and their rich donors.

Very easy. The rich will go where they’re treated best. Bye!

I look to the Scandinavian countries for modeling. Nothing is perfect, but I enter 2023 with more optimism than I've had in decades.

Between 1945 and 1979, at least in the U.K. The rich solved the problem by offering those with a bit of capital the chance to be just as selfish.

Capitalism is about helping the individual get rich, not about looking after the peoples needs.

Not individual. A few groups/families of organized criminals.

Capitalism is not about “helping” anyone but self. Like any system it has limits as does Communism and Socialism. Elements of all give the best result but the proportion of each is an elusive recipe.

No. It is not. It is about enslaving people to both a working life ( ridden and soaked with the antithesis of democracy, an ideal that almost all capitalists would swear to adhere…EXCEPT in the workplace, in which, with the exception of the worthless ballot box, people are deemed far too ignorant and stupid to control jobs and working conditions that their own bosses know, notoriously, next to NOTHING about ), and, simultaneously, enriching the owner( s ) of the firm.

Carbon credits for everyone. Spend or save as you want. You go into debt if you spend beyond your foot print. Buy and sell from others. But, everything you buy has a price. The new economy.

imagine usa got on the thing that not the smartest ppl are the richest and they do not offer projects options as a state , and like making rich ppl pay less because wealth is wealth like money for projects is not right , they got to the idea that making ppl who hase no virtue for what they own , is a bright idea for countrys like qatar.
